QUAINT COLLEGE LAWS. Rolra PreaerlbtnB the Dress of Harvard Siudeots In Bygone Days. The curious laws regarding students dress which prevailed at Harvard up to the middle of the last century are illustrated by two eighteenth eentury waistcoats which are among the collections of the Boston Art museum. One was worn by a member of the class of 1749 and the other by his son In 17S4. The latter waistcoat is olive green in color, conforming to tbe college regulations, which required either blue gray, plain black, -nankeen" a kind of buff or olive. The coat and breeches which originally went with It. as one may read in the old time Harvard "Laws." were blue gray. Freshmen of that date were allowed only plain buttonholes, sophomores leaped to the dignity of having buttons on their cuffs, juniors might have inexpensive frogs to the'.r

It cost "not more than 10 shillings" fcr every appearance of goM or silver adorn ni--tit. The ruies of costume were changed, of course, from time to time, la ltiJS. for example, the prescrilted .dress consisted of a black mixed coat, single breasted, "with a rolling cape square at the end and with pocket flaps, the waist reaching to the natural waist, with lapels of the same length." It is explained tbst - "black mixed," called also Oxford mixed, was black with not more than cue-twentieth uor less thin oue-twenty-tifth part of white. The senior was allows! to supimrt his dig nity with three "crow's feet" of blaci. silk cord on the lower part of his coat sleeve. Two crow's feet were permitted o the junior, one to tue sophomore and none at all to the freshman. t York Sun. -Th was introduced to tne
court by former Attorney General Miller, with whose firm he will now be identified. Speaking of his admission
to the bar and the motives for it. Colonel Harrison said: "This step, a consummation of a long cherished intention, has been hastened by my own desire and my father's dying wish that I should carry out his intention to fight to the end the unjust, unmilitary and outrageous treatment meted out to me as a soldier by the war department. To carry on the case successfully I found it necessary to have a complete training In law, and as my father's sudden sickness and death deprived me of his assistance and advice I at once gave my entire time to completing my final studies and examinations. "In order better to discharge my military duties, which included the inspection and supervision of military and civil justice In connection with the establishment and maintenance of military and civil military governments In Cuba and Porto Rico and tbe operations of our army, I devoted much time while in the service to the study of law, including Spanish law, and the last eight months I have given uninterruptedly to the study of law in day and night classes."
