The snail is extremely skillful lr. mending its shell, and some curious experiments may be tried with them Thus I have seen a helix of a yellow species attached to another shell of a reddish hue by cutting off the top whirl of the latter, when the snail will proceed to weld the two shells together and occupy both, using the addition as a door and possibly wondering at this sudden extension of its house. In the winter some of the snails hibernate or lie dormant until warm weather, just as the snakes do in California. A snail of the Philippine Islands has a facufty of throwing off its tail when seized. This is ako true of a West Indian variety stenophus. Spiders' Web. The webs of those spiders which spin snares out of doors, as the geometrical garden spider, are formed of two sorts of silk, one of which is used for the main cables and the radiating threads, the other for the concentric threads. The latter are thickly studded with minute globules of a viscous substance, which retains the fly. gnat or moth that may blunder against them, whila the former are quite dry and harmless. A third kind of silk is produced by the busy little spinner when some such large insect as a wasp has become entangled in the web and threatens tc break the delicate structure in its struggles. This takes the form of an enveloping mass, which Is suddenly produced and which effectually prevents any further gyrations on the part of the captured insect. Cornhill Magazine. A Giant Tree. Near Dakar, in lower Senegal, Is an enormous baobab tree whose trunk measures fully seventy-five feet In circumference at the base. The fruit of the baobab, which grows abundantly in Senegal, is called "monkey bread." It Is used by the natives for curdling milk and as a specific fr certain diseases. Decoctions of the dried leaves are also used as medicine. From the bark strong cords are made, and the gum that exudes from it is employed as a salve. The breaking of automobile records is getting to be an almost daily occurrence, and the minimum time in which a high geared, many horsepower machine can circle a mile track Seems to be still unfixed. Within a month the record has been lowered several times, and a machine now that cannot whirl the distance in at least a minute and a quarter need not hope to wia in the race. The contests for lower record have been intensified by the international element entering into the siort by the hot rivalry between French and American makers. Until recently it was necessary in order to get a really fast machine to go to the foreign makers. 1 The two chauffeurs who have been most prominent in the automobile world lately are A. C. Bostwick. the young millionaire sportsman, who is one of the vice presidents of the Automobile Club of America, and Henri Founder, the well known French chauffeur, who won the long distance race from Paris to Berlin this year and who has won many competitions on this side of the water. Founder was the mentor of William K. Vanderbilt, Jrin the sport, and Vanderbilt has been his companion in some of bis most sensational rides. World's Tnrf Bodies Agrree. That an agreement between the leading horse racing bodies of England and the United States of America will be made, whereby the authorities of the turf will have control of all racing affairs, has been settled beyond the shadow of a doubt by the recent statement made by August llelmont, one of the organizers of the Jockey Club of America and Tor several terms president of that organization. S .Mr. lielmont is now iu England and j has had important conferences with j the authorities of the English turf. He j also visited France, where he talked i with the leading mm in French rue- f ing affairs and. as was stated afterward by French turf writers, induced the French Joek.y club to agree to an arrangement whereby the relations between the French and the American turf shall be reciprocal. Mr. I'.clmont saw the English turf authorities on the same matter and from all reports obtained an agreement on the subject. When 6een, be declined to talk further than to state that be bad discussed turf affairs with the officials of both the English and the French turf and that they had displayed the most friendly spirit toward the Jockey Club of the United States. Fiercest Baseball War. President Watkins of Indianapolis has been through several baseball wars, but he thinks the present struggle the fiercest he has ever known.
