It is autboratively stated that the Pencsylvania railroad will spend

Marines from the gunboat Machias still guard the station and property of the railroad here. The battleship Iowa will land forces at Panama when the necessity arises. Washington correspondents are sending out all sorts of speculations and prognostications concerning the appointment of a successor to the late Judge Woods. One day they have it that the two Indiana senators have agreed on a man, and the next that they are at sea on the subject. Again these correspondents declare that when the senators have agreed there is to telling whether

the appointment of their choice will be made or not by the President. It is frequently hinted that William Dudley Foulke may play an import

ant part in the matter. Of course all this talk is mere guess work. Tt may be taken for granted that no choice has yet been made for this

position by the Indiana senators, and it is equally cerU i 1 that the man finally agreed upon by them will be appointed. There is cot the slightest reason to suppose that their recommendation would be antagonized by Mr. Foulke.

"It Is a fact that this razor once belonged to the barber In Li's suit, ant' when he made his tour of tlie world a few years ago it was left in my shoj to be boned and was never called for. There is nothing unusual looking about this razor, as you will see. except that the blade is completely covered with Chinese characters, but I never used a better one. New Danger to ( olon. New York, Nov. 23. Advices received by the Panama Steamship and Railroad company from their agents at Colon state that all was quiet and the norther having passed, the steamers had returned to port, having ridden out the storm without accident. The officials of the company fear that if General Alban, after the fight at Chorrera, attempts to retake Colon, the place is likely to be burned and property worth millions destroyed. They say that during the insurrection of a dozen years ago the Liberals and Conservatives had a fight at Colon, and as a result of the conflict the place was burned.

to a hone. "On one aide you see three or four Chinese hieroglyphics. Well, they compose Li's name, so I have been told by people who ought to know. I was working in a New York hotel at the time LI visited that city. One morning a well dressed Jap cauie in and handed me this razor, explaining that he was Li's barber and that he desired it to be fixed up Immediately. "Of course I was somewhat surpris

ed, especially to learu that a Chinaman had a Jap in his service, and, as the fellow could talk English very well.

I drew him into conversation. He said that he had been with LI during his entire tour of the world and that the old fellow was shaved once and sometime twice a day with this razor. "After he went out I got down a bone and spent considerable time over the ;razor, expecting that the jap would return later in the day for it. but he never came near me, forgetting.

I imagine, the location of my shop. A day or two later Li left the city, taking his retinue with him, and I had the r'azor. "One day I took it down to Chinatown and showed It to several Celestials. In every instance I was unbesi tatingly told that the characters reptesented Li's name, and I was offered a fancy price for it. Since then a number of Chinamen have visited my shop at different times, asking me if I would sell the razor, it evidently being their intention to send it back to China as a gift to the old man. Now he's dead. I suppose the Instrument is worth considerable as a souvenir."

When they came upon Wright and Templeton the latter two fired about 40 shots at them, seven of which took effect in the Gillenis. Wright and Templeton then escaped. They have been pursued since last August, when Legear was killed, and they swear they will not be taken.

Keynard wa Shy. Irvine Depot. Ky.. Nov. 23. The eighth annual meeting of the National Fox Hunters' association came to a close yesterday rather abruptly. The weather has been so dry that it was found impossible to hold satisfactory trials. The foxes once raised could not be followed, and after a vexing loss of what promised to be a fine drive yesterday, the directors decided to bmig the meeting to an end and declare the all-aged stake off, as was done in the derby race. .

A Slap From FnKland. If we could sweep away half the things we have got to learn nowadays.

we might , learn to think. There is no

time. Snob a crowd of material things press ou us that we cannot tell what are necessary and what are superfluous.. In addition to what we have already to get up, there is the alleged necessity of that commercial aud technical education of which we hear so much. How much more French and German and Italian and Spanish shall we have to learn in order to compete with our rivals in huckstering? Perhaps we cannot do without this new apiMiratus. For self preservation we may lie driven to it, but what has It to do with our capacity for thinking': Ingenuity like that of the American, of which Lord Hosebery speaks, is a rattier inferior kind of mental activity prompted partly by vanity, partly by restlessness, which must always be doing something from sheer nervousness.

partly from greed. Lord Itosebery is doing his best to taunt us into imitation. London Saturday Review.

Some one has asked why there is not a young women's Christian association. Several answers might be given, but one is sufficient. The Palladium has practically given it a number of times by showing that women are naturally better- than men, and hence that they do not need a moral caretaker such as the Y. M. C. A. Metal at a Carl. "Metals may be burned for tbe sake of the heat and light they produce. Jnst as ordinary fuels are burned." said Professor Roberts-A nsten In a recent discourse at the Royal institution In London. But tbe burning of metals, he proceeded to show, differs from that of ordinary fuels in that the products of combustion are not gaseous but solid. "The burning of aluminium gives sapphires and rubies in tbe place of ashes. An instance of burning metal for the sake of light Is furnished by tbe magnesium star." a contrivance by which a shell packed with magnesinrn and attached to a parachute ia fired electrically high in the air. thus pro-! ducing an illumination of the ground beneath at night.
