Tlie details of tbe agreement between the Marconi International Mariii Communication company and Lloyds are given in tbe current number of tfte London Electrician. By the terms of this agreement the Marconi system of wireless telegraphy is placed urxu a secure and enduring footing for mercantile marine signaling and intercommunication between ship and coast signal stations. As is well known, up to the advent of the Marconi system communications between passing ships at sea and betweeu vessels and tbe Uoyds signal stations have been by Sag signals. Against this system, which has been In use for centuries, many objections have been made. Distance was always a drawback, as tbe ra&ge of vision even on a clear day Is limited, and in foggy or stormy weather or In the night no signaling except the "pilot dare" and the signal of distress Is In vogue. Further than this. It has often been necessary for a vessel to go out of her course to signal coast stations, thus losing valuable time and often runuing into danger In the effort to get near enough to the station to give ami answer- mi Besides this, the system of Bags is j cumlersome. and only a few phrases i can be sent back and forth. I Now that the Marconi system ha ben proved a success it seems strange that there has not been more haste in taking it up on all merchant vessels. Of course the question of monopoly will arise, for. according to the agreement. Lloyds will employ no other system of wireless telegraphy than that of the Marconi company for the nest fourteen years, but as the Morse system and the telephone were monon..ii,.o it chrmhl lx no drawback. They will receive commercial messages at their signal stations from any vessel supplied with the Marconi apparatus and will also send message to any such vessel, but they will receive or transmit no wireless telegraph communication whatever where a vessel is equipped with apparatus not supplied by the Marconi company. By this agreement tite monopoly Is established, for tt will be necessary for vessels desiring to communicate with shore in that way to get that particular apparatus. Tle agreement further provides that whenever a center for commercial wireless telegraphy with shi)s would be advisable tbe existing Lloyds stations at these jwiiits shall be worked on the Marconi system, or If no station exists within about twenty miles u new Lloyds station will be built and of course le placed In ordinary telegraphic communication with the British postoftiee lines. Arrangements have been made by which Atlantic liners fitted with Marconi apparatus will be supplied with all tbe latest Important news as soon as they come within about a hundred miles of the coast of America or the British islands. The rental 6ystem which lias been In force with the Marconi company will not be used under the agreement, but a tariff system will take its place. Signal stations will be allowed free use of the apparatus for the ordinary receipt of Lloyds signals, and vessels signaling to one another are permitted a certain number of service messages, but for all commercial messages a charge of sixpence par word In addi-j tlon to all land charges will be made. ' There can be little doubt that business meu on steamers, finding that they can communicate with land a hundred miles out at sea. will be prone to use the system and that tbe dissemination of Important news on the vessel is likely to promote private messages. With this system in vogue, it seems as if there should be a decided improvement in the security of ocean voyages. Vessels equipped with the wireless, Instruments may almost always be in touch with other ships on transat- , once be flashed through the air, com munication being possible for at least n hundred miles. Under these circumstance any steamship that floats around disabled and lost to the world would do so simply because the owners of the vessel have neglected to equip her with the wireless system and thus failed to take one of the most ordinary precautions against trouble and worry. Overdue vessels will be able to tell where they are and what has delayed them, so that anxiety may be allayed. and a call for help at sea from a hun-1 dred miles away should rarely or never fail to be answered. Those who go down to sea in ships in tbe future are more than likely to ask questions in re- . gard to the Marconi equipment, and it Is bv no means impossible that the systern" will be as Important and necessary a part of an Atlantic liner as the proeller. Many of the more advauced farmers of the state are receiving their market quotations over the lines every day, and this Is bringing the long distance wires into a use where absolute accuracy is required, and accuracy in this case means clear ennunclation. This information was received at Iowa City, la., the other day by President George E. MacLean of the University of Iowa from President David Starr Jordan of the Leland Stanford university, says the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. The latter scientist will be amoug those In charge of the expedition, which will sail from San Francisco Dec. 1 on board the Albatross bound on a deep water dredging tour of five months duration. President Jordan Invited Professor C. C. Nutting of the chair of zoology. University of Iowa, to assume charge of the department devoted to bydroids and animal life. The Iowa regents granted their savant a leave of absence In order that he may join the expedition. President Jordan in his letter to Dr. MacLean says. THE CINCINNATI REBUILT. Tbe First All Steel Warship to Have a KiBrarehead. The cruiser Cincinnati is the first all steel ship of the service to have a figurehead, and when she Is placed in commission at the New York navy yard on Dec. 1 she will display a life size heroic figure of Liberty in steel and wood standing straight out from her well curved stem, says a Washington dispatch to the New Tort Sua. This figure was designed and constructed at tbe New York yard under direction of Rear Admiral Francis T. Bowles, then In charge of the construction workshops, and Is declared to be a perfect specimen of the figurehead for a warship. Such decorations disappeared with the gradual abandonment of wood for steel vessels, and even with many of the old wooden craft there were few of those immense figureheads which years ago were the distinguishing feature of all American naval vessels. The last of this nuruber to display figureheads were the vessels of tbe line of battleship class that found their way to the burial ground of the navy soon after the civil war. With it there was a letter of thanks from the kine's secretary, and, while the king expressed his jrratification at the noble sentiments expressed in the lines, he said it would be Impossible to have the poem read.
