CUBA LEARNS FROM U. S. HOW TO KELP WELL American Health Methods -Enormous Demand for Paine's CY1ery Compound.
Whatever eise has been accomplished ia Cuba, the health of the island has been wonderfully improved. In Havana the change has been magical; streets have been asphalted, sewers built, buildings whitewashed and drug stores supplied with scientific, up-to-date preparations. The demand for Paine's celery compound has grown to enormous proportions. The following statement from E. J. Molina of the Havana Custom House shows the standing Paine's has already secured among the most progressive, energetic peopleof Havana: Havana, Cuba, Feb. 4, li01. Wells & R chardson Co.: Dear S rs i take great pleasure in stating that I have used your Paine's celery compound, both while in the United States as well as in this city, and find it to be of wocderfplly restorative poer, especially in this enervating climate. Very tru y yours, E J. Molina. Tklnxa Every Woman Want to Know. The present fashion tends to diminish the number of knives and forks, etc., et down for each guest. Nowadays a larpe spoon for soup, a fisbknife and fork and a large knife and fork are the average. . A neatly folded napkin (the more plainly and daintily this Is folded the better) containing a small dinner roll or an evenly cut piece of bread is placed In the center before each guest. Glass and china nowadays can be procured at a rate suitable to every lze of purse, and very little care is needed to procure pretty tableware at most modest prices, and its perfect condition is easily secured by good washing and rubbing up. This is an age of fads, which must be consulted if a dinner is to be a success, o the hostess should take pains to tody her guests' idiosyncrasies and do her best to satisfy them. Am It Were. Not only among business men, lawyers, clergyman and physicians, but among all classes of thoughtful, intelligent people, Paine's celery compound is the one reliable remedy for building up the system when it isrun down It is the greatest nerve and brain invigorator the world has ever known. If your wife, daughter or sister is pale, languid, headmen tni irritable, persuade her to try Paine's celery compound. "Do you not consider your husband the most graceless sinner in existence"'" This question was asked the wife of a gay Lothario by a rival for his affec tions while playing a game called "can dor." The stillness became intense and every pair of eyes grew rounder as those present looked from one woman to the other. It was the husband" voice that broke the silence. "Your question is out of order, Bea trice," he said quietly. "It is a rule laid down in courts of law that a wo man is not required to testily against her hxisband." In the confusion that followed as th game broke up the man sought his wife's side. "What should you hav replied to the query of the fair Beatrice; if I had not come to your rescue s neatly?" he demanded. I should have said you were a sinner, yes, but a graceful rather than a graceless one." I appincott's. Slow bit Inexorable Jnstlee. In October, 1900. He is the best known living member of his famous family. Mr. Gladstone Is, as his father was, one of the leaders of the Liberal party. He is now forty-seven years old and has been in public life since 1SS0. Like his famous father and the other members of his family. Mr. Gladstone Is a graduate of Oxford. lie gained various honors during his university ctreer, and from 1S77 to 1SS0 he was a history lecturer in Keble college. In the latter yesr Mr. Gladstone contested a seat in parliament and has held it ever since. He represents the city cf Leeds. From 1SS0 to 1SS1 Mr. Gladstone was one of his father's secretaries, in 1SS5 he was a lord of the treasury. In 1SSG financial secretary of the war oQce, from 1802 to 1894 undersecretary of the home office and from 1S94 to 1895 first commissioner of works. Since 1S93 the Liberal party has been out of power, and he has held no offlcre. Since 1809 Mr. Gladstone has been chief whip of his party. The duty of a "whip" is to see that all members of a party are ia their places when an important measure is to be acted upon. The office is unofficial and ia not known in American politics. Mr. Gladstone's abilities, although real, have been overshadowed by those of his eminent father. He is a steady, earnest, hardworking man of great independence and winning personality. His few enemies accuse him of lack of brilliance and initiative, but it has always been felt by his friends that he has lived In "the shadow of a great nm. A Woaderfal Echo. Many wonderful echoes are known, but the one which takes the first place seems to be that cf the old palace of Simonetta. near Milan, which forms three sides f a quadrangle. The report of a pistol is said to be repeated by this echo CO times, and Addison, who visited the place on a somewhat foggy day. when the air was unfavorable, counted 50 repetitions. At first they were quick, but the intervals were greater in proportion as the sound diminished.

A gentleman whose curiosity was aroused by this singular practice to the extent that he went t the head waiter for a moi" satisfactory reason than the table waiter could advance was given this explanation: "You see," said the waiter, "the generality of men don't care for a heavy lunch. One dish and a glass of miilv or a cup cf coffee, with bread and butter, are sufficient for them; consequently to prevent tlictn from getting off too cheap we have to put up the price of single dishes. Why are there so few lunatic asylums and so suir.ll a proportion of insane persons in India V That is si question winch many a traveler has wonlerlngly asked. The Hindoos regu'ate their lives en tirely In accordance with their religion that is, their working, eating, sleeping as well as what we usually regard as our "life" in the religious sense of tinword. Everything is arranged for the; j. and they follow the rules now just as they did 2.0(H) years ago. This coustant observance of the same rules for twenty centuries has molded the brains of the race into one shape, as it were, and although their rites are queer enough, ret there is but au occasional example of that striking deviation from the common which is called insanity its. countries inhabited by the white race. They are fatalists too. With them it is a case of "what is to be will be" carried to the extreme. This has in time given them the power to take all things calmly and so freed them from the anxiety that drives so many white men into the lunatic asylums. Met Hla Match. That well known historical personage, Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony, has furnished the subject for many a tale of his wonderful muscular power. We need refer only to one characteristic story in which, however, he met his match. On the occasion in question he entered a blacksmith's shop. To Fhow his suit how strong h" was. picking up several horseshoes, he broke one after the other, asking thI blacksmith whether he had no letter. Whin it came to paying the bill, the Elector Augustus threy a six dollar piece on the anvil. It was a very thick coin. The blacksmith took it up. broke it in Lalf. saying. "Pardon me. but I have given you a good horseshoe, and I expect a good coin in return." Another six dollar piece was givet him. but he broke that and five or six others, when the humiliatid elector put an end to the ierformauce by handing the blacksmith a louisd'or. pacifying him by saying. "The dollars were prob ably made of bad metah but this gold piece, I hope, is good." Manila Don. During the whole of 1900 no case of rabies was found in England or Scotland, and it is asserted with confidence that the disease, which had been present for centuries, has ben entirely eradicated. This official statement justifies the stringent muzzling order passed by parliament a few years ago and the vexations regulations against importing doss. - A few cases of rabies were reported from Wales, where the regulations were not enforced strictly. For the first time in fifty-one years not a single person died of hydrophobia in England and Wales in 1S&0. "
