V1it the Joke Fell Pint. A big. goud uatured farmer was awaiting the suburban train, accompanied by a handsome Gordon setter. Two sons of Itritain stood near him. The dog strayed away from his owner, who was reading a newspaper. "IIey'" called the farmer. "Come here. Locksmith," and the dog immediately ran to his feet. One of the Englishmen approached the farmer. "May I nsk," he said, "what you called that dog?" "Locksmith." said the farmer. "And why. pray?" "ISecause every time 1 kick him he makes a bolt for the door." There was a general laugh. In which the Englishman joined. When he returned to his companion, he remarked: "Most extraordinary name that man over there calls his dog." "What?" asked his friend. "Locksmith." replied the first Briton. "And why such a name?" "Because, he says, every time he kicks Mm he bolts for the door." St. Louis Republic. The Weight of lee. The iceman and the coalman are often suspected of giving short weights maybe oftener suspected than guilty; maybe oftener guilty than suspected. The means of testing the weight cf from ten to thirty pounds of ice are not always nt hand in the house, but a close estimate of the weight can be reached by multiplying together the length, breadth and thickness cf the block in inches and dividing the product by thirty. This will give very closely the weight In pounds. Thus, if a block of ice is 10 by 1U by 0. the product is 90O. and this divided by thirty gives thirty pounds as the correct weight. A block 10 by 10 by C weighs twenty pounds. This simple method can be easily applied, and it may serve to remove unjust suspicion or to detect short weights. French Ratlvraj-a. Railways in France are forbidden to carry persons visibly or notoriously affected by contagious diseases in compartments that are used by the public. In the second place, the daily cleaning and the periodical disinfection of all cars are required. Linens of sleeping cars must bear a ticket indicating to the passenger the date of the last cleaning, and they must be properly washed and afterward subjected to a high temperature. Dry sweeping and dusting, which only serve to scatter disease germs, are prohibited, it being required that all floors, seats and woodwork be w'pd with cloths moistened with some antiseptic solution. The Arctic Weasel. In cold countries where snow prevails during a long winter many of the animals change the hue of their coats to a white tint. The arctic bear and fox are white throughout the year. The northern hare is brown In summer and white in winter. The weasel Is especially curious- It retains its brown ccat until the first snow appears and then whitens In a few hours. Re Remembered. An old legend gives the followiug ae the origin of the snowdrop: After Adam and Eve had been driven from the garden of Eden Eve was disconsolate. One day as she sat silently grieving in angel appeared and sought meaus to comfort her. She longed lor the flowers, but the fast descending snow was wrapping the barren earth ill a robe of white. As the angel stood and spoke words of hope to the weeping. reMntant woman he caught a snowtlake. breathed gently upon it and said: "Take form, pure snowtlake. bud anJ blossom and be a comfort to humanity, now and forever." In a twinkling the suowflake changed Into a beautiful flower, as white and pure as the snow itself, and when Eve beheld the n'ewborn blossom gladuesa and h'je came to her heart, and she smiled through her tears. Having fulfilled his mission of love, the angel departed, but where he had stood there immediately sprung up a circle of perfect snowdrops. - An .Eoliaa Harp. To make an axilian harp construct a box of very thin pine, cedar or other wood, five or 6ix Inches deep, seven or eight Indies wide, with a length equal to that of the window in which it is to be placed. Across the top. near each end, glue a strip of wood half an inch high and a quarter of an inch thick for bridges. Into the ends of the box insert wooden pins, like those of a violin, to wind the strings around, two pins in each end. Make a sound hole In the middle of the top and string the box with small catgut or tirst fiddle strings. Fastening one end of each string to a metallic pin iu one end of the box and carrying it over the bridges, wind it around the turning pin in the opposite end of the box. Tune the strings in unison and place the box In the window. It is better to have four strings, but a harp with a single string produces an exceedingly sweet melody. Antomoblle Terms. The automobile has brought many new words into use. The correct word for a private collection of automobiles, equivalent to "stable." seems to afford considerable ditficultv. "Motorban." iuotorome." "motorden.1 "notorium. "motor shed" and "motable" have all been suggested. The French term "garage" would be a good one if It were not used for designating a place simply for storing and repairing ar tomobjles. .
