tions?

Other pertinent questions are being asked as a result of these hwchnIvw

unfortunate occurences. It can not be concealed that the utmost alarm is

beginning to be felt. It is said that the Boers who captured the British at Reddershurg belonged to -Olivler's

commando.

It Is asserted that 4,000 rebels surrendered during i,en. Clements' north

ward march. The Boers will do their

utmost to hold Ladybrand and Tliaha

N Chu. both being rich grain produc

ing districts. It is said that most of

the prisoners captured at Boshof are

foreigners.

The report that Mr. Steyn had been appointed to the command of the Free

Staters and the further reirt that the Free State has arranged a loan from the Transvaal for war purposes, are both confirmed.

The Nation, in the course of an article reviewing the present pltases of the war in South Africa, says: , "Mr. Chamiterlain's regime is a danger for all continental states. The small states of Kurope, above all others, have cause Tor fear. They have to fear that what is hap

pening to the Boer states and what

Portugal will have to endure may

happen to every other small country which might unfortunately stand In the way of British policy. What is

possible for small countries may also

happen to large ones, if not strong

enough in a military sense. It will become constantly more plain that the

policy of Great Britain has contrived enormously to Increase disquiet and

distrust in the world, and as a consequense of this armaments will grow continually."
