LAVTON'S AVENGER.

T!.e Filipino sharpshooter who loosM the gallant soul of Genrra! Lawton 'as himself killed I t a bullet from the rifla of a SJoax rro,.-jtT of Lawton's bodyguard befur tu sr?at American soldier had ceased to breathe. Prirate William Colorabe. Troop I. Fourth eaTalry. was the instrument of an Inscrutable fate, according to the Philadelphia 1'ress. It was this same Fourth cavalry. I which Lawtiio was a first lieutenant, that 23 rears ajro swept op the reToit of Craj Horse m the Black Hills and was a cart of the force which compelled that able warrior to snirenJfr. The family of Trooper Colombe on his mother's fide were aiana the caoUes which Lieutenant iJiwton helped to jraanl, for the Bryle !ioui haJ taken th warpath with tle "beyenneis, and Gener al McKenzie crashed them utterly in desperate and trviug midwinter eg mpaisrn. This trooper son of a Brule Stonx mother was not born at that time, but he often heard the warriors teli campfire tales of the preat raid of the soldiers in blue and of the summary punishment which smote the Sioux and Cheyennes. Law ton. already a veteran and dustinpuLsht'd ofIi-er. was then renowned amor.sr the Indians of Dakota, Arizona and New Mexico as a fighter and a foeman who did not know what it meant to let go when he started after a hostile party. Ami Trooper Colombe. as a tonsle headed .rnuaier seamrK-ring around the asreney. had U-nrne! to ft-ar the name of the cavalry lieuteuuiit as a sort of In dian "bogy man." After many .years it came abont thai this boy, now grown a tratht and s!alml' i WlXLt AM COI.OM'.IE. wart man m tlie early twenties, enlisted u the rotfuhir jmny of the United States ind was nssim .i to the Fourth cavalry. Ie was so II i int a soldier and so fearess and disciplined a neuter that enral Lawton chose him to be oue of his ersonal esi-ort or iHidyiruard through hat thuuderbolt cau'i-ain across the uountains and morasses of Luzon which woke the back of Aguinaldo's rebellion ind which was by far the most brilliant ifnd fruitful operation of the war. it was a startling series of coincidences i!i itself that by Lawton s side there ought and dared for the old Bag a tribesuan of his former quarry od the plains nd deserts of the west: that the guidons f the old Fourth cavalry blazed the Hue f their killing jungle forays, and the lood kin of the lad who flashed saber ud cracked carbine with Lawton in the Islands half around the world had felt the sjmiung band of the leader when those ame glorious troop guidons followed in he charge. But these things were only the Betting flor the scene of tragic destiny whfn eath held the center of the stage at Sim 3Iateo. Trooper Colombe has written a simply nld story of the climax to one of his old achers at the Carlisle Indian school, of hieh he was a pupil. This is how he words a description of the event who dramatic power could not be overdrawnOn the ISth of December, 1S00. we itarted away from Manila about 6 o'clock tin the evening. Long, of Le Loup, Franklin Co., Kans., writes: "Words cannot express how grateful I am for your kind advice and good medicines. I have been in poor health more or less all rny life. In the past nine vears grew worse, and two years ago I was so poorly could hardly drag around. I consulted a specialist, and he said I had ulceration and that an operation would have to be performed. This did not seem necessary to me, so time -went by, and at last wrote to Dr. Pu rte asking advice. I soon got a helpful answer advising me to try his medicines, the ' Favorite Prescription,' "Golden Medical Discovery,' and also his Pleasant Pellets. I began taking 'Favorite Prescription and the other medicines as advised. When commencing I weighed ligi pounds, and after taking one bottle of each I felt like a new woman. In one month I gained 8 pounds. After taking two bottles of each of the medicines, I began to look like a woman and not like a skeleton, and that weary tired feeling all left me. a(3CIl3(niIlB!iIw BY LETTER WITH DR.R.V. PIERCE

The pam at times was so severe that ' could scarcely move without scream mg. W hen I stooped over I could scarcely straighten up airain. I had urinary disturbances and 1 sought in vain for relief. I at last heard o Morrow s Kid-ne-oids which I ob tained. Manu factured bv John Morrow & Co., Chemists, Springfield, O. town, ana after wfe got into town we had to fight our way to the other end of it. "The blacks fought hard, because thct thought they had ns on the run. be. there is no run In ns. We lost about IS men in that fight. "General Lawton was killed about 2 yards from where I was shooting at a man in a tree, and I think he was the yery man who killed the general. Hut we kept shooting until he fell from the tree. I don t think he will live to tell the tale to his friends that he killed our good general." That is all. but the narrative could not b improved by any attempt at "tine writing. Trooper Colombe uses only nine words two syllables long in telling how the death of Lawton was avenged. All the rest is monosyllabic. This is in Trooper Colombe's literary style, and it has im presv.ve merits. The young trooper's record at Carlisle was an excellent one. lie was at trie school nearly four years, entering Od 19, 1S!5. and lenving to enlist in the regular service on May 20. IKY.i. Major Pratt, the superintendent of the Carlisle school, furnished the following Information about his former pupil, who has bo singularly linked himself with General Lawton's fate: "Colombe was a good, steady fellow. who never gave me the least trouhle. He did his work well and never made any complaints. He was in charge of the bakery, quite a responsible position, with three of the boys under him. "His record us a student was com mendable. He was advanced one grade each year of his stay, which is all that is expected, of the boys, and seemed to ap preciate the advantages offered him. "Ice is' not a full blooded Indian, as his father was a white trader at the Rosebud agency. North Dakota, and his mother a Sioux. So William did not have any waf paint and feathers to put off when he came to the school, and we have no pictures of him before and after taking He Is 23 years of age. "Fourteen of our boys are now serving Uncle Sam, and we hear of are making good records. I have received letters from several of them. I sent a bundle of them to Washington as showing how our Indians are revealing themselves as sol diers. Among the letters was one from William Colombe. They were turned over to Adjutant General Corbin. who thought them so interesting that he gave them to the secretary of war. The secre tary. in turn, gave them to the president. who indorsed these favorable opinions bv reading them all through." lhe story told by Colombe of his part in avenging Lawton's death is very striking, and there is no reason for doubt IL THE GLASS OF FASHION. The warp proof silk squares for fan cy waists are carrying all before them. Meteore crepe de chines, spotted with chenille, like flowers In white, are one of the novelties of the season. Empire gowns are becoming to very few women, but they are revived again s part of the scheme of soft clinging materials. The new hats In sight show very detided crowns more or less high and sometimes broad, being of fine straw plaited into form as if it were cloth. The latest style of coiffure shows less crimping. The hair Is waved, of course, but not In such decided rolls as formerly, and Is arranged very high on the head. The pompadour still remains. Long sleeves covering half the hand seem to have originated the fashion of wearing no gloves at teas and the the aters, providing, of course, that you are handsomely dressed. At least this la the latest Parisian Idea of the fitness of things if you are well supplied with jeweled rings. Jackets for sprine are very short and simple in style, finished with rows ol stitching alone or very narrow jjipinjrt: with stitching above. Some of them are double breasted, with handstmc buttons for a finish. Eton coats are shaid down below the waist line iD front much as they were made in the autumn. Among the novelties In neckwear is a narrow band of four silk covered cords stitched together, shaped a litTle to fit the lower edge of the collar baud, and the ends, about a quarter of a yard long, are braided in the fo'tt strands and three silk tassels are the finish at ear-h end, This is worn sim ply crossed in front and fastened with a stickpin.
