"BOXERS" SENTENCED
Chinese Government Passes Judgment on Murderers of Rev. Brook. ¶ Pekin. April 2.— The Chinese govern ment has "settled" the controversy arising out of the murder on Dec 3 last of the Rev. Mr. Brooks, of the Church Missionary society, on the fol-lowing-lowing terms: Two of the murderers will be beheaded; one imprisoned for life, one for 10 years, another for two years, a memorial chapel will be erected upon the site of the murder and a tablet will le placed in Canterbury cathedral, England, at the expense of the Chinese government. —— ¶ Rev. Mr. Brooks at the time of his murder was stationed at Ping Yin, In the province of Shan-Tung. He was captured in that vicinity and killed by members of the seditious society known as "Boxers," who had been very active in destroying villages and slaughtering native Christians. The governor of the province had dispatched a force of cavalry to the scene of disturbance, but the soldiers arrived too late to save the life of Mr. Brooks. The Cleveland Adrift. ¶ San Francisco, April 2. — Advices froni Honolulu under date of March 21, state that the well known steamer Cleveland, bound for Sau Francisco with a $100,000 cargo of sugar from Kahului, is adrift with a broken shaft and practically helpless in the open sea. When last heard from she was several hundred miles from Maui. Three of her crew left the steamer In a small boat to go to Maui for assistance. They were spoken by the steamer Eric March 20, 40 miles from Maui. .———————— Robbery and Murder. ¶ Birmlngham. Ala., April 2.—At Clinton, Ala., Saturday night, two negroes entered the store of J- T. Sterling, knocked the clerk, Thomas Buntain, on the head with an axe and left him insensible on the floor. They then robbed the store and finished the Job by cutting Buntaiu's throat. His dead body was found yesterday morning. Two negroes have been arrested and are in Jail at Eutaw, eight miles south of Clinton. President Steyn Active. ¶ Maseru, Basutolaud. April 1.— President Steyn is reported to have gone to Ladybrand to stir up the burgher's there to renewed resistance. The Boers removed from the immediate vicinity of Plattberg and taken up a commandinir position adjacent. ¶ The Dutch who surrendered their arms at Ladybrand are now suffering seizures of their live stock. Return From Cuba. ¶ Washington, April 2. —The subcommittee of the senate, consisting of Senatores Platt. of Connecticut; Aldrich and Teller. which went to Cuba for the purpose of personaly investigating coonditions on the island, with a view to intelligent action by congress with respect to Cuba, has returned to Washington .———————— An Early KIondike Season. ¶ Seattle, Wash., April 2.—The ice in the Upper Yukon shows indications of breanking up and making navigation possible this spring six weeks earlier than in any prevlous neason within the memory of Alaska pioneers. This is :the news brought by the steamer City of Seattle, which arrived yesterday afternoon. .———————— Fatal and Foolish Wager. ¶ Venice, Ills., April 2.— Henry Dorst killed himself here last night by drink ing a quart of whisky without removing his lips from the bottle except to catch his breath letween gulps. He and some companions had bought a quart of whisky and one of them said he would pay for the contents if Dorst would drink it all. This be did. .———————— Home From Philippines. ¶ San Francisco, April 2.— The transport Sheridan arrived from Manila yesterday. She reported typhoid fever aboard and was placed in quarantine. The Sheridan brought from Manila 110 army prisoners, 86 sick, 11 insane and 32 discharged soldiers and 11 navy prisoners and 14 sick sailors. .———————— Noted Bandit Captured. ¶ Alamogorda. N. M.. April 2.— Romero Ruiz, the noted bandit and leader of a gang of cattle thieves that have been operating for years in southern New Mexico, and one of his followers have been captured by the sheriff of this county .———————— A Former Senator's Burial. ¶ Oshkosh. Wis.. April 2.— Former Senator Philetus Sawyer was buried Sunday afternoon. The funeral was the most imposing and impressive ever held in this city. Special trains on the Northwestern and St. Paul roads brought 400 people to the city. .———————— Woman Commits Suicide. ¶ New York. April 2..— Mrs. Kate Jordon, who lived with her son. Milton E. Rocket, secretary of James J. Corbett, in handsome apartments on Forty-second street, committed suicide yesterday by inhaling illuminating gas. .———————— Two Firemen Killed. ¶ Owosso, Mich., April 2.— Two fire men were killed by falling walls yesterday in a fire which destroyed the Central High school of this city.
