GENERAL LAVTON.
How and Where He Met His Death Bills Introduced toy Senator Fairbanks and Representative Landit to Pension His Widow. Manila. Philippine Island, December 19. Major General Henry V. Lawton was killed at San Mateo this morning. He was standing in front of his troops and was shot in the breast. lie died immediately. General Lawton left here Monday night, having returned from his northern operations last Saturday, to lead the expedition through the Mariquina valley, which has been an insurgent stronghold throughout the war. The valley has several times Ix-en invaded, but never held by the Americans. General Geronomo was supposed to have there the largest organized force north of Manila, and Geueral Otis wished to garrison Mariquina. The night was one of the worst of the HesiMon. A terrifie ruin had !- irun and is contiuuin. AixxMnpanuHff by his stall and tro.n I, fourth cavairy, i Geueral Lawton set out at 'J o'eW-l k in advance of the main force, consisting of the eleventh cavalry ami one Ijuttalion each of the twentieth and twenty-seventh infantry, which started from La Ioma at midnight. With a small escort h& let! the wav throntrh an almost pathless co lutrv. a distance of fittwn iiiiln over hills and through cane bruKe and deep mud, the horses climbing the rocks and sliding down the hills. Heforo daybreak the command had reached the head of the.valley. San Mateo was , attacked at 8 o'clock and a three hours' fight ensued. This resulted iu but a few casualties on the Americanside, apart from the death of General Lawton, but the attack was dillicult because of tho natural defenses of the town. General Lawton was walking along the tiring line within 300 yards of a small sharpshooters' trench, conspicuous in the big white helmet heal-, ways wore and a light yellow rain coat. He was also easily distinguishable on account of his commanding stature. The sharpshooters directed several close shots which clipied the grasi near by. Jits staff officers called General Lawtou's attention to the danger he was in, but he only laughed with his usual contempt for bullets. Suddenly he exclaimed: "I am shot," clenched his hands in a des-n-rate effort to stand erect, and fell into the arms of a staff officer. Or derlies rushed across the field for surgeons, who dashed up immediately, but their efforts were useless. The body was taken to a clup of bushes and laid on a stretcher, the familiar white helmet covering the fat of the tlead general. . Almost at this moment the tfrs -.f the Atwr--ajiJrr7asbl!l Sau f at"""rel e 'n'utfhng with the rifw-wilevs. After the fh:ht six filtcav following. The troops filed bareheaded through the building where General Lawtou's body was laid aud many a tear fell from the ejes of men who had long followed the intrepid Lawton. The entire command was stricken with grief, as though each man had suffered a iHrsonal loss. Sau Mateo lies between a hijrh mountain behind and a broad, shal low stream in front, with wide sand bars which the insurgents trenches and the buildings commaud. The Americans were compelled to ford the river under fire. It was while they were lying in the rice fields and volleying across prejKiratory to passing the stream that General Lawton was shot. All except the officers were behind cover. A staff officer was wounded about the same time, and one other officer aud seven men were wounded. After three hours shooting the Filipinos were disiersed into the mountains. Colonel Ixx kett took command when Geueral Law ton fell. Owing to the condition of the country, which is imjHissablc so far as vehicles are coucerned, the remains could not be brought to Manila todav. Mrs. Lawton and the children are livimr in a irovernment residence for merly occupied bv a Spanish geueral. Washington, i. C, IVcember 20.
