, THE UNLUCKY DAYS.
Tao .laeianta Had a Ut Llrf of Dmy to bo fnnt In ancient times the heathen wer ao superstitious with regard to certain aaj-i that they were pointed at in their calendars with different colored characters to mark the lucky ones and the unlucky, and all class arranged the details of their daily Ufa witb reference to these marks. We of the present day claim to be free from all this, but many there are wno will not begin a journey nor a piece of work on Friday, nor cnt the natr in the last quarter of the moon, and who are very much frightened if trie sort rays of Luna chance to fall upon the face while they are asleep. Friday is even under a ban; even with regard to the weather, there is an old saying which declares that Friday's moon. Come when it will, comes too soon, 1 In countries where capital Danish ment is in vopue Friday has nearly always been "hangman s day. Th?re are many superstitions con nected with New Vear s day; one that is still firmly believed by many of the devout is that of opening the Bible. at random and putting the finger on any chapter contained in the two pen pages. It is believed that the luck or unltiek of the coming year will in a greater or loss degree be fore shadowed by some of the lines. Again, others lielieve that it is very unlucky to take anything out of the House on .New lears morning before taking something in: the old rhyme which expresses this bolief runs as follows: Take out, then take in. Bad luck will lx-gin: Take in, thentake out. Good luck comes abouu Certain days for birth have general ly some particular attribute given ttiem which tell us that the child: Born on Monday is fair of face; Born on Tuesday, full of God's grace; Born on t ednesday. sour and sad; Born on Thursday, merry and glad; Born on Friday, worthilv given; Born on Saturday, work hard for your living; Born on Sunday, you will never know want. He will be able to detect whether the trouble is due to mental or physical weakness, and will treat and prescribe accordingly. lvil Worship. In Spain, Germany, France. Italy, as well as In the northern countries which had embraced the reformaticrn, devil worship was leliered to be practiced, orgies celebrated, malevolent tricks of revenge perpetrated by the votaries of the evil one on their neighbors. If a child was seized with epileptic fits of if a pig died suddenly, if a toad were found under the bed or a cat Jumped in at the window, if a cross-grained old woman cursed rude, ill-mannered brat, and the child aiterwara sunerea wun any complaint the witchcraft which must undoubtedly be at the bottom of such occurrences called for immediate investigation. Nor was it long before a victim was forthcoming. Ienial was of no avail. The longer such denial was persisted in, the longer were the tortures inflicted. The accused was urged to confess to the usual charges, and encouraged to accuse others, in tnrn to suffer the Bame fate. And so the horrible business spread, until, like a prairie fire, it burned itself out for a time, only to start again from some fresh sparks of suspicion. The crime itself was held by all to be so enormous that no punishment could be too great for it. V.rT hard Hood. THE GAME TARPON
Shook ng a bio fellow an expert ENCENOT EASILY FORGOTTEN. Th. Proper Oat at ThM I, Rooairxi Tha Fteh I, Uj ! Xhim Hu Equipped HIb for wtragg-lo Hi Month Pi With Hoao Plata. Provided the aspiring tarpoon slaver is pre pa red to expend anywhere from to -U or more, he may supply himself with an excellent outfit through any respectable dealer. It goes without saying that no really conscientious disciple of Isaak Wal ton will be content to order his out fit offhand, leaving evervthine to the dealer, thereby sacrificing the exauisite satisfaction or making his own selections, let such is the spirit of the age tnat not a few of our elided youtn are prone to order their fish ing tackle as they do their trousers by the dozen and leave all details to the tailor. Let such go their way; they will probably catch no tarpon. 1. he approve! roi tor this sport Is seven to nine xeet long, fitted with a large multiplying click reel that will hold some two hundred yards of fifteen to twenty-one thread linen line. Tastes differ regarding the hooks, but the lest authorities favor something not far from JU-O in size, forged and ringed. The Dublin tend Limerick is a favorite witn some successful fish ers. The snell, the connecting link be tween the hook and the line, offers the most difficult problem. The tar pon jaws are so constructed that the snell must be built to order to cir cumvent them. These jaws, be it known, have overlapping side plates which are in effect quite efficient shears. They will cut anvthing not made of metal that has body enough to offer resistance. Naturally a chain was the first resort, but tue minute Sir Tarpon closed upon a chain he knew it, and ejected it forthwith, bait and all. for his mouth is conveniently paved throughout with boue plates upon which no hottk has the least hold. At last tno ingenious device was hit uiHui of using a snell made of several strands of rather soft-laid cotton lire, dyed some dark color so as to be inconspicuous when wet. When the jaw shears close uion this it spreads apart into separate strands and iHM-omes too thin to cut. Sir Tarpon perceived nothing wrong, so the portion of mullet covering the hook continues its downward course, tak ing up the slack of the long snell as it goes (the snell should Ik? twenty-four to tweuty-eight inches long and pursues its way rejoicing until a sudden wrench at an inward locality not pro vided with armor plates tells him that he la hooked, and then the fun begins. His first act is to throw himself lKdily out of water, with his huge Jaws wide open, and jerk his head violently from side to side. If the bait is not completely gorged he will o. .cu force it out. But if the hook secures a hold the effort is vain, and the struggle of skill asainst energy goes on. Again and again, sometimes a score of times, the fish leaps from the water to shake himself free. Miles upon miles he swims, doubling upon his course, circling, sulking until he often tires out his would-be captor, who is glad to hand the rod over to his boat man for a rest. Such a confession of weakness' is, however, so humiliating to a true fisherman that if he has any "sand"' in his composition he will fight it out to a victorious finish or an honorable defeat. Such an experience is not easily forgotten, and the fastidious coquettishness of the tarpon in the matter of taking bait renders it nearly certain that to the average fisherman killing a tarpon will not become tedious through frequent repetitions. Far more likely is it that his patience will give Jit after a few days under a troplcja sun upon a breathless sea, aaji will never experience the thrill of thi Jttver King tret" "for ?ftrryr4 jneajvtrpon seas i in t lorida waters begins tn March and improves throughout the summer, the best of it coming long after most visitors have fi.nl northward to escape the heat with its attendant pests. As a table iish the tarpon is not a great success, though with such sauces as a French chef knows how to prepare It is not altogether to lie despised when nothing better can lie had. As a staple article of food, however, it lias its uses iong the Florida lieaches, for there the native fisherman spears the magnificent fellows, scrape off their silver scales with a hoe, cut their persons up in long strips and dry them in the sun for provision when other "hog and ominy" fail. A Whitewash Train. Some of the new lalor-savitiK devices are of the unexpected order. Here, for instance, says London Titbits, is the !raiid Trtiuk Railway, amonp other devices for reducing its working expenses, doing its whitewashing by steam. It has a regular whitewash train or rather two trains, ine for each division. The apparatus consists essentially of an old engine in which the !oiler does duty as a receiver. Into this the whitewash is sucked from barrels as required, and there it is kept in agitation by a Westinghouse pump. From this it is ejected by another brake pump as a fine tspray, so that a man can lay the color on as if he were watering a garden with a hose. In this way he can whitewash two or Uiree stations a day. Ray th Kmperor'a Horm. Kniperor Villiam, always eager to lead the way. likes a good piece ot horseflesh. His horses are usually of Knglish nreed, although on rare oc casions he buys them In Germany.
