I came, I saw, I conquered. has long been the Itoastfui song that impudent bird, the mighty BhVsns Lu--opteras, otherw-i.se known as the chinebbug. i He bas Ions had a cinch on everything. No other insect native to the Western Hemisphere, says Prof. S. M. Webster .entomologist of the Ohio Experiment Station, has spread its devastating hordes over a wider area of country with more fatal effects than this one. CORX EATE BV THE CHINCH BIT.. Prof. Webster gives an acenjnt of Jts probable origin and diffusion. Its habits and development, n.-itural checks and remedial and preventive aiea.sures, with mention of the habits of an allied Kuropean species. j Here are a few facts which Prof. Webster has put in his bulletin: The American chinchbu? has made its appearance in every part of North America from Cuba to Manitoba. He hasn't made much headway west of the lioekies. He Iiil winatc In the? adult stage. If there is an ample sup ply of proper food close at hand he simply crawls from his hiln-rnating place, but if he is in the timothy mead-! ows of Northern Ohio, he does nothing but continue his ravages where he left' off the autumn before. He, or rather she. deposits her eggs above or below the surface ot tne ground, among the roots of the grass or grain. She depos.ts about oOO eggs, scattering them over a period of from MR. CHINCH. MKS. CHINCH. 10 days to 3 weeks. In ! days the baby chinches grow to youth and mature to manhood and womanhood, and are ready to have fun with the farmer. But if it rains much at a certain ieriod Mr. and Mrs. Chinch and the little chinches have a hard time of it. and it is worse than the yellow fever is to humans. Certain fungi are death to the chinch as toadstools are to small lwvs. If the Entomophthora Aphidis. or the Sporotrichium Globuliferum meets him it's a certainty that he will kill the chinchbug. Some birds kill him. among these iing the quail, prairie chicken, blackbird, catbird .thrush, lark and nouse wren. But if you can give him a uose of kerosene he Is done for lnsiaiiu-r. Mr. Chinch has len at his ravages in our land since 17fC. when he killed nearly all ue wheat in North Carolina. During the years lS!.H-"!7 he got away with $2.nmi.ooo worth of farm projerty in Ohio alone. Since he legan his depredations on the farmers of the United States he has cost them fully $330,0lO,0X. From the above facts it will be seen the chinch is a mighty power in the land, and Trof. Webster has done his State, as well as the whole country, a great service in exposing the little rascal. Dairymen and others who feed large ly of corn have noticed that most animals do not object to the portions of the ears and stalks that are covered with the black parasitic growth known as corn smut, but on the contrary seem rather to enjoy it. for this reason less care is taken to stamp out the disease than would be the case ff feed ing it was found injurious. The fact is overiooKeu. However, that the consumption of these smut-affected cars and leaves by no means destroys the uisease germs, hut that in the deposit e; of the animal they are distriinited over the ground, possibly to appear the second year in a much more marked degree. It is hardly probable that farmers realize the immense amount of damage done by this disease .or the practice of feeding smut-covered corn would stop. It is claimed that in lN'JS in Ohio alone, the loss by corn smut was more than one hundred thousand dollars, and more in some other states. The disease should lie taken in hand early in the growing season iu order to stamp it out as quickly as possible. Go over the corn field every ten days or so and cut out and burn all parts. affected by smut. Moistening and Soaking Froita. Soaking grain feeds for cattle ami hogs Is quite generally recommended and the tests made by numerous ex periment stations seem to support this general opinion, in nearly every case wnere pigs were experimented with the animals ate more of the wet fod and made larger gains on it. It must lie admitted, however, that the additional gain was nsually'due to the j larger amount of feed eaten and not to its moist condition. The Kansas sta tion Boaked shelled corn for tire t9r i nptii it began to soften. Another lot of five was fed dry corn. Those given soaked feed ate 282 bushels, while the others ate 2DO. The first lot gained 1V4 pounds more than the others, a difference of $25.50 in favor of soaking. From this the station concludes that it pajs to soak corn for steers if this can le done for 6 cents or less. Soaking wheat for pigs is quite generally recommended. A Doable Barn With Much Loft Room. The accompanying illustration shows a plan for a barn with double driveways In which the distinguishing feature is the great amount of loft room. Four gables added to the main roof space give almost another story's capacity to the barn, making is possible to use nearly the whole of the lower floor for stock. With a silo aud A DOUBLE BARN. the root cellar that will be found In the basement it will be possible to carry a large stock on the fodder that can be stored beneath the roofs. There are many conveniences about a double barn, and when one is to !e built the form here given will prove an excellent one to follow. rreventinc Hoc; Cholera. The farmers who do the most doctoring usually have the most trouble. Cleanliness, pure water, clean troughts and clean beds will do much to prevent disease. Feed plenty of charcoal, salt, ashes and some lime. Occasionally saturate some old rags with kerosene and carlolie acid and burn in the pig pens and house. Sulphur burned in the same way will do much to purify hog quarters. Exposure to a ea 'dn t limatie r-har e produces cold in the bead land cstatrh is apt t" follow.
