Verne bad counted them all. she found, to her horror, that they nunilkerpd thirteen. She bethought her to invite M. Roden. the cure, who had christened little Hor tense. So M. Ttoden was Invited, and all went well until two days before the supper, when an unimportant young cousin bethought him to break a limb, and reduce the party again to thirteen. The time was short, but madam made the best of it. She invited the music teacher, who accepted with delight. Matters were arranged once more, when a message came to Uncle IMerre which demanded his presence elsewhere. Again there were thirteen guests, and but half a day remaining. Mine. Verne was eiial to the emergency. Slie sent a note to a deaf gentleman of her acquaintance, begging him to come. And now all was well again. The ladies were adding the finishing i touches to their toilettes in the dressing room, when suddenly screams were heard to resound through the house. The maiden aunt. Mile. Uosine. had j caught her dress on tire. It was ex- ! tinguished lief ore she was hurt: but the dress was spoiled, her nerves up set, and she coiVi not and would not remain to the supper. Mine. Verne was in despair. Sndt denly she remembered her notary. A 1 carriage was at the door. She tossed on a hood and shawl and hurried into it. j It was only five minutes ride to the building in which the notary's office was located a many-storied edifice, of which he occupied the second floor. I On the first were situated the apartments of M. Moran Hortense's betrothed husband. As she hurried past their door Mme. Verne glanced toward them and saw a lady dressed In black ' speaking to a servant, who, at the same instant, shut the door In her face. ' Mme. Verne, having mounted the stairs, was doomed to a disappoint- ' ment. The notary was In, but he was suffering from an attack of the gout. However he could give her the direction, to a quortohzieme, who, if he was disengaged, would be happy to hire himself out for supper time. As she reached the foot of the stairs, however, she paused. A woman, dressed in black, sat upon the lower one, rocking herself to and fro and moaning. She touched the figure upon i s shoulder and said: "My poor child, 1 what is the matter?' I "I have come from the country; 1 am an orphan: I have no relatives: I came to find a friend who promised me . everything; 1 know no one nere. j Yesterday I spent nty last sou. And with these words she led the girl into her home upstairs into her own apartment, where she adorned her in haste and led her out to ihe table the lovliest guest there lovlier far even than the golden-haired Hortense. Absorbed in her duties as hostess, Madame Verne did not notice, -as the. others did, a strange thinjr that took place as M. Moran t -ated himself and danced toward the strange cues!. As their eyes met each turned deaal Once only did the strange girl in a whisper to 1dm. Verne. "This is a betrothal feast, mad "Yes. my child." "Your granddaughter, the berjiitifnl .oung lady yonder, Is to marry M. Octave Moran?" "Precisely; in two months. After this she said nothing more. At last they were about to leave the table, and tie old grandfather arose. He had something to say to the young couple kind admonitions to him who was about to take her into his keeping; but he ended thus: "But I give her to you gladly, my dear Octave, for I know you to be an honorable mau; and I believe you will pive her a heart as pure and fresh aud all unwritten as the one she gives to you, a heart worthy of her acceptance." As he uttered the last sentence Octave Moran had slowly turned his face, as though attracted by some mesmeric Influence, toward the stranger. Their eyes had met and fixed in a strange stare; the other guests were all staring at them. Suddenly Octave Moran started to his feet and dashcJ out of the room. There were thirteen at the table. Something flashed into the lmnd of the itale woman, at whom all gazed and she fell forward upon the t!!le. When they lifted her they found a dagger buried in her heait. Death had been more prompt with his thirteen than usual. regularity is a ti after of importance In ert-ry woman's lift. Much paiu is, howevfr, endured in tl;e tv'iiof that it is ics.-iary and nt alarming. Tthrn in truth it Ls all wrong and indicates derangement that may cause serious trouble. Excessive monthly pain itself will unsettle the nerves and make women old lefore their time. The foundation of woman's health is a perfectly normal aud regular performance of nature's, function. The statement vie print from MbiS CJerrmrE Nikf.s, of EMred, Pa , is eolied in every city, town and hamlet in this country. K.id bat sue says: " Dear Mf. I'ixsuam: I feel like a new person since following your advice, and think it is my duty to let the public know Hie good your remedies have done m. The present Mrs. I'inkhain's experience in treating female ills is unparal leled, for years she worked side by side with Mr.i Lydia E. Pinkham. and for sometime past hnshaisole tbavga of the correspondence department of her great business, treating by letter as many as a hundred thousand aihug women during a single year. All suffering women are inviteu to write freely to Mrs. I'iukiiam, at Lynn, Mass.. for advice about their health. CASTLES IX THE AIR. AERIAL MONASTERIES IN ODD CORNERS OF THE WORLD. Uullt Far Aloft for Safety Some Can Be Reached Only by Hope and Windlas or Swinging l.iilJfM-Ao Ideal Spot for leac and Kepote. The monasteries of Meteora. near Larissa and the tUilf of Saioiiica, iu Turkey, are in very literaltiess castles iu the air. The ideal of every monastery is high, aud those at Meteora translate this aspiration into brick and mortar. They were originally set far aloft in their inaccessible situation for the sake of safety; but iu many cases even such precaution has proved inadequate. A few years ago only eight of the original twenty-two were inhabited, the remaindes having been destroyed, often by artillery fire from commanding positions in tUe vicinity. Since then St. Stephen's, too, has goiia the way of the majority. f ( 3 vJ HOW TO REACH BARI.AAM MONASTERY. This was the only monastery which could be entered on foot, a plank drawbridge spanning the abyss which divided it from the adjacent mountain. "Hoodoods." or Turkish Iiregular Guards, lay in ambush near, and, on the bridge being lowered In the morning, rushed in, robbing and destroying. IMssappointed of the rich booty they expected, the invaders proceeded to torture and kill many of the monks. Indeed, in the first Oreek War of Revolution, all the monks would probably have been massacred had it not been for the English and Kussian Consuls at T.arissa. The remainder of the monasteries can be entered only by means of a rope, windlass and net. In which one sits and is drawn tip to a window several hundred feet above, or by rope ladders fastened against the side of the cliff. Either method is somewhat trying to the nerves, for the slightest giildiaess on the swinging ladders would probably prove fatal. The monks themselves usually use the ladders, and look like black flies crawling up the face of the rock. They climb with the body bent almost double, and hands and feet close together, monkey fashion. i The most picturesque of the old "castles" are Barlaam and Ilagia Moni, a neighbor of St. Stephens. I Life In these "Castles in the Air" ls the most peaceful possible. One is completely cut o.. from the world, and can lie on the soft patches of grass outside their doors, and dream to one's heart's content no sound coming up from below save the tinkling of the sheep bells and occasional faint cries of the villagers. The air Is delightfully fresh and pure, the sun is warm, aud all around there stretches a magnificent panorama of rich plains, brilliantly tinted hills, and snowy mount ains. Kim CHINESE MONASTERY IN THE KXVEK YANG-TSB-KIAK'J. Altogether, it Is quite an ideal spot for a fortnight's perfect peace and repose, safe from the many worries of our modern frantic civilization; but let the Intending visitor beware of the numerous brigand, official and otherwise, who infest the neighborhood, and who can be relied cn to make things extremely unpleasant for the unfortunate tourist who should fall Into their hands. Fifteen years later the denrecia tion in the price of diamonds caused the owners of rulne3 to restrict the output, and hundreds of miners were thrown out of work. One of the best evidences of the value of lightning rods ip to date has been afforded by the Washington Monument. It is capped by a small foursided pyramid 'of aluminum, which metal, so cheap to-day. was very costly at the time of the building of the greatest obelisk that the world has ever known. This aluminum tip is connected with the ground by four copper rods which go down deep into the earth. On April 5, 1S5, five immense bolts of electricity were seen to flash between the monument and a thundercloud overhanging in the course of twenty minutes. In other words, the monument was struck fiercely lives, times, but it suffered no damage whatever. On June 15 of the same year a more tremendous assault was made upon the monument from the heavens, and the result was a fracture of one of the topmost stones. The crack still remains to show what nature can do in the way of en electrical shock, but the slightness of the damage ia evidence of man's power to protect bimself from such attacks. The obelisk is ideally located for attracting electrical assaults from the skies, and yet. while many tinea hit, it has suffered only once, and that time to a trifling extent. Here la Thrift.
