ON MANY SUBJECTS A Xatnml Fan; Hra. At the Fu-alionos the eroaire aseata bar worked with queer caprice. This rock bain- rranit. baa been acted upon by the aea at all levels, and throughout the Ions period when, ft baa been, rifling out of th water depths. Through a long, narrow bole, slanting and communicating with the ocean, there comes at Interrals a terrific stream of air. forced by tbe spasmodic heaving of the wares against the lower orifice. The government, which uses this island for lighthouse purposes, inclosed the upper end with the noxxle of a fog horn, and every few seconds there was blown an ear-splitting brawl, which was heard far out at sea and above the din of the breaking rollers. It was allowed to roar only in foggy weather, but it was eccentric in that it would only sound at high tide. When the tide was low,, although the weather might
be very thick, the thing was silent. For lack of its warning a ship went ashore upon the island rocks, and then it was that the government abandoned its location on the wind bole and erected a steam siren, or mechanical fog horn, which has since very faithfully performed the necessary service. The Litkr Maori. The Maori tribe have a godsend in the way of boiling springs. They can soak themselves all day in warm weather; cook their meat and potatoes by simply hanging them in their nets in a corner of a hot water spring; launder their garments by soaking them ia a boiling soda spring and rinsing in the warm, clear water of another bubbling geyser and walk proudly off In clean garments. Bat She Cashes It. "Poor Miss Wellalong! She has had another birthday." "How do you know? "Her usual check on the bank came from her eccentric old uncle. He sends her one every birthday." "I think she is to be congratulated, instead of pitied." "Yes, but every check he sends is for as many dollars as she is years old, and she has to go to the bank herself to get the money." Time To I by Taste. A strange clock was made during the last century for a French nobleman. The dial was horizontal, and the figures, being hollow, were filled with different sweets or spices. Thus, running his finger along the hand, by tasting, the owner could tell the hour without a light. China Galore. The Czar of Russia probably owns a greater quantity of china than any other person in the world. He has the china belonging to all the Russian rulers as far fact as Catherine the Great. It Is stored in an immense closet in the winter palace at St. Petersburg. A Thought EiprM4. Miss Buddlette What do you think of the new telepathy party? Miss Longoulete I never think; you know each thought leaves a wrinkle. Miss Buddlette (looking at her attentively and sympathetically) What a pity you didn't quit years ago. Clock Mae of Bread. Milan has a curiosity in a clock which is made entirely of bread. The maker is a native of India, and he hai. devoted three years of his time to the construction of this curiosity. The clock is of respectable size and goes well. To Destroy WeeAs. Weeds can be destroyed in gardens by a new machine having an oil reservoir mounted on wheels and provided with an air-pump to force the oil into a series of burners, which transform it into gas and discharges it against the weeds. All Hands Aroand. One Thomaston, Me., family means to take no chances with diphtheria. Every member thereof wears a tarred rope around the neck, and this precaution is extended even to the cat, dog and pig. A boat the- Caterpillar. A French scientist says a caterpillar cannot see more than two-fifths of an inch ahead. The hairs on the body are said to be of as much use as its eyes in letting it know what is going on around. ? Great Britain's Expenses. The expenses of Great Britain are about 1500,000,000 yearly, or nearly $1,000 per minute, but every tick of the clock represents an inflow of a little over $10 into the treasury, thus leaving an annual surplus of about $20,000,000. Maaie's Library. Mudie's circulating library In London has 3,000,064 books constantly in circulation, and employs 178 people. Pnmlee Stone Boat. A lifeboat made of pumice stone has been tested. It continued to float with a load even when full of water. The Amen ! I of marriaere is always a babv. Without it, wedlock is a summer field that never blooms, a flower that never b;ds, a nitfht without 5 tar, a sermon without a benediction. a prayer without an Amen. There never was a husband worthy of the name, who did not aspire to be the father and the frrandfather of healthy, capable children to hanrfc down his name and the fortune accumulated by the sweat of his brow, from feneration to generation. There never was a wife fit to bear that noble title, who did not wish to wear womanhood's most g-Iorjons crown, the sceptre of motherhood. Thousands of wedded conples, otherwise happy, fall short of wedlock's greatest happiness because they are childless. In the majoritv of cases, this is because the wife, through ignorance or neglect, sneers frora weakness and disease of the organs distinctlyfeminine. For women who suSer in this way there is one great medicine that does not faii to accomplish its pnroose. It is Dr.. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It act directly oa the delicate organs concerned and makes them strong, health v. vieorous, virile and elastic. It allays inflammation, heals ulceration, soothes pain and tones the shattered nerves. It fits for wifehood ' and motherhood. It quickens and vitalizes the distinctly feminine organism. It banishes the maladies of the expectant months and makes baby's introduction to the worid easy and almost painless. It insures the little new-comer's health and noorishment in plenty It is the best supportive tonic for nursing mothers. Mrs. Jennie Parks, of Marshall. Spokane Co., Wash., writes: " I am ffiart to tell of the rood r results of yonr gTeat medicine. Dr. Pierce s ! Favorite Prescription. I was heuefilJ by your medicine in confinement. It rives me strength. I have no tired feeling and or? baby the picture of health. I feel better than 1 have in ten years." In cases of constipation Dr. 'Pierce's Pleasant Pellets should be used as an adjunct to the "Favorite Prescription. they are extremely simple, perfectly natural and insure provot and permanent relief.

Richardson, District PasseDger Agent, Indianapolis, Ivd. Advantaa-ea ot Small Farms. Too much land is expensive if it is not kept in good condition, as the taxes thereon will be an expense which must always be met. But few farms are well supplied with manure, and the result is that the land is not adequately furnished with "plant food. Nothing Is gained by spreading themanure necessary for five acres over ten times that area, for the smaller the yield the greater the expense of growing a crop in proportion to receipts. The largest yields are on email farms, and the profits are greater because less labor is required in hauling and harvesting the crops. The distance in hauling manure regulates the number of loads, but the expense for labor is the same for a few loads as for many where the handling of the manure is an important matter. It is in the concentration of effort that expenses are lessened. If a farmer can secure eighty bushels of corn from one acre he will make a larger profit than from forty bushels per acre on two acres, as he will have only one acre to plow and cultivate, and his land will become better every year because of being well manured. Damaged Grala, The question of feeding damaged grain is always interesting, anything concerning it acceptable to eur readers. Here is a man who is feeding sprout ed wheat, making it the morning feed in a daily ration which contains a mash at noon and cracked corn in the evening. His hens are a cross of the Indian Game "and Brown Leghorn. Their average for the month is 19 eggs a piece. There are twenty-four hens in the flock. Six were broody at different times during the month. In March and April the flock was fed heavily of buckwheat. The reports for the three months indicate that as an egg producer the sprouted wheat was very much better than the buckwheat. The price paid for the damaged wheat was 70 cents per bushel, at a time when sound wheat was selling for more than double that figure. Oae Farmer's Experience. The Toronto Globe says a Canadian 'armer who kept 24 cows and 2 hired men tested his cews with the Babcrwhtest and found that 8 were urnrnfifj. ble. H disposed of them and let 1 hired man go, aad at the end of the year found that he kad made as much money from the 16 as from the 24.
