WHOSE FAULT

It Was That the Streets Were Not Cleaned Sooner Not the Street Commissioner. There has been much complaint among citizens within the past fe days with regard to the almost impas sable condition of Main street at the crossings. The blame for the neglect hs Deen plentifully showered upon the street commissioner, bat it transpires that he is not the guilty party. The work of the street commissioner has been lately most strictly defined to be under the direction and surveillance of the street and alley committee of council. This fact was not borne in on the committee with sufficient force for them to take thought of their duty in this matter. There was 10 wilful neglect on their part. The duty is practically a new one to the com laittee. as it is only lately that tbe council has grown stiict on that sub ject, and as soon as the fact was called to the mind of the committee the street commissioner was instructed to get hi gang of men at work cleanine rff tbe crossings, and it was done. The work is progressing today, and it will soon be seen that the new street commis sioner can keep the streets passable whenever he id vested with the proper authority. THE FIRE. The One This MornlnRat Hut ton's Coffin Factory Might Have Been Bad. Tbe fire alarm this morning just before 6 o'clock balled the departments to the Hutton coffin factory on north E street. There was a fire in a pile of shavings, and had not the departments arrived when they did there would have been a bad conflagration no doubt. There was some water thrown, and the fire was soon extingu std. HE WON'T TAKE THE CHANCES. Here is where Gus Miller who resides at 643 south E street shows his good sense. It takes time to do anything well. Anything worth doing at all is worth doing well. ' Morrow's Kid-ne-oids have done me a wonderful sight of good," said Mr. Miller, "but I shall not stop just because I am free from all existing sort of trouble just now. I am determined to keep on With them until I am sure I have the old trouble entirely blotted out." Kid-ne-oids help everyone so quickly that they labor under a false impression that they are cured, when the fact ii they are only relieved. We always try to impress on everyone the necessi ty of continuing with them until they are dead sure they are cured. Here is what Mr. Miller said : "I have been troubled for sometime with my kidneys, say three year? at least. I suffered with pain in the small of my back, highly colored urine and at times excessive. 1 was nervous and could not sleep well nights and got up feeling languid and miserable and felt unfit for work. I have been wonder fully relieved, but I will not take any chances, and shall keep right on with th9m. fori feel certain I have found a cure." DEPEW BEAT A GAMBLER.

No less a man than Chauncey Depew fell into the bands of one of tbe most noted of the transatlantic card sharps on a voyage which he made to England boot seven years ago. Mr. Depew smiles beatifically even yet when he reflects upon how he won 100 from Tom McGarrahan, who died in afBoence three years ago, after having "followed the 6teamers" for many years. McGarrahan waa introduced to Mr. Depew by one of the latter's intimate cboms and fellow voyagers. The latter, who was and still is one of tbe elderly wags of New York, knew all about McGarrahan, and so did a lot of the other friends of Mr. Depew on board. These friends of the great Channcey who knew about McGarrahan and his record got together and made a pool that they wonld get tbe gambler and tbe great nominate! together at a game of baccarat. Soue of them bet that the thing couldn't be done, while ethers paid their money tbe opposite way. Tbe gambler McGarrahan wasn't informed cf the scheme, bet be was simply introduced to Mr. Der;w and given an opportunity to follow hit natural bent. McGarrahan was a polished, middle aged Irishman, a University cf Dublin honor man, as he took benefit of doubters, and he charmed the; eloquent Chauncey by his wit and wealth of information in no time. McGarrahan did business with a number of gullibles during tbe first part of tbe voyage, but he manifested no disposition to engage his new friend, Depew, in a game of cards, and the men who had bet that he wonld were worried. On the third day out, however, the gambler, finding business a bit dull, finally invited Mr. Depew to join him in a little game ol baccarat. Mr. Uepew hesitated and consulted with his conscience for a moment, bnt the Irishman was persuasive. I have not hitherto played cards quite so publicly, said Dr. Depnw, "but, as I don't enppose I am any better than my neighbors well, just a hand or two. " The two men sat down at one of the tables, and all of Mr. Depew 'a friends who were "in" on the scheme gathered round to see bow he made out Mr. Depew won $500 from the Irish gambler within two hours. Then one of the stewards informed him that his ward, who was taking the voyage with him, was ill in her stateroom, and Mr. Depew hastily withdrew with his winnings and was in attendance upon the young woman for the remainder of the voyage. '.'Depew," said one of his friends who had been in tbe scheme to get the orator at acard table with a professorial gambler, "do yon know who that man was from whom yon won a nice little bundle of 5 notes a few days ago?"; "A Mr. McGarrahan a very clever Irishman," was the reply. ! Mr. Depew was informed who "Mr. McGarrahan" was. "Bless my heart, is that so?" exclaimed the voluble Channcey.
