Marched From Havana to Que mod as Camp Today. Havana, f"uba, December 17. -The I61at Indiana and 2nd Illinois marched from here to Qiemodas eamp today. General Sheridan Taks Command of the Department of the Lakes. Washington, D. C, December 17. By direction of the President, General Michael Sheridan has been as signed to the temporary command of the department of the lakes, relieving Brigadier-General Bacon. Railroad Robber Shot. Columbus, 0., Decent er 17. James Foster, a detective for the Panhanrf'o railroad, caught two men robbing a freight car early this morning. They shot him twice. He returned the fire, but fell from the loss of blood. An hour Inter Fred Deering, a special policeman, went to the house of August Brokowski, a saloon keeper, with a pistol wound in the stomach. He ditd without making a statement. A revolver was found on him with three empty chain bers. Brokowski' house was searched and a lot of stolen goods found. Mrs. Wm. O Frye entertained the Ladies' Afternoon Social club Thursday afternoon and the occasion was very much enjoyed. A lunch was served that was enjoyed. The prizes were won by Mrs. Henry Macke and Mrs. Henry Kunge. The next meeting will occur the week between Christmas and New Year. There will be a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gennett, east Main street, on the evening of December 22, in honor of some holiday guests. The Traveling Men's Pedro club met last evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Say lor, on north fourteenth street. The prizes were won, by Mrs. Miio Ferrell and John Savior. 1mimin iiiihrir-rx-f " The Spring Giove Literary society met last night at the Ken worthy home north of the city and spent an enjoyable meeting. , A lice program was rendered. There will be an entertainment at the First M. . church some time next week, probably on Friday night. December 23, in which a novelty will be introduced in the way of stereopticon pictures of a number of wellknown children about the city. This is but one of the features, but it will certainly be an attractive one. The marriage of Mr. Frank Williams to Miss Passandra Weeks is announced for the new year. The tourists had a very enjoyable meeting last night at the home r.f Prof. D. W. Dennis, West Richdoomi. The main feature of the entertainment for the 9veni-ag was a sterioptic-n lecture by Prcf. Dennis, giving views of Rocky Mountain scenery. The subject of conversation was l"The Indian," and was generally discussed. There will be do other meeting until after the holidays. ED. WEIDNER. He Is in the City, Having Received His Honcraole Discharge From the Army. Eddie Weidner, formerly of this city, lately with the coast def?nse service heavy artillery at Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, is in the city again, havmg received his honorable discharge from the service He is "looking well, has grown a half inch iu height and gained six pounds in weight since be entered the seivice, and feels fine. ' The local Christian Endeavor union is preparing to give an entertainment at the First Presbyterian chcrch toward the latter part of the holidays or immediately thereafter. The society is beginning already to get themselves thoroughly prepared for the Christian Endeavor state convention to be held in this city next fall. Charley Flook has ceased his duties on the police force, and the new man, George Stei' kamp, has tfcen up his work, beginning la?t night. The new policeman looks well in bis uniform, and will make a geod officer.
