The clubhouse was decorated with palms and flowers. More than 200 members and guests of the club were present Following the reception a dinner was given which lasted until after 11 o'clock. Rear Admiral Schley was toasted and retold the story of the Santiago fight. The most striking utterances in his speech were: "In the matter of expansion wc find ourselves in a somewhat peculiar pre dicament. We find that somebody has left a baby on our doorstep. I hav the confidence in the American people to believe that they will know bow to deal with the subject. When the destuction of Cervera's fleet bad been completed, We noticed a clond of smoke arising in the distance. We believed it to be the Pelayo. When we got closer and saw she was a smaller ship, we remarked, 'Oh, hell, she's dead easy!' We were about to fire when we discovered ebe was an Austrian ship. "I have never seen such an engagement in my life, and I trust I never will see one like it gain. If, however, the result of that fight will bennion between the mother country and our own. one of the most glorious victories of modern times baa been achieved." New York Press. SHORT NEWS STORIES.
Xa HarclJnd a Myth ? Kitchener a Man of Resources Bear Admiral Schley Was Upset. Two great nations are seriously perturbed over the presence of Major Marcband at Fashoda. Now, after careful inquiry, I have secured evidence cf the most positive character that Major Marchand does not exist. I cannot go eo far as to say that he never did exist, for, as a mawer of fact, he was killed on attempting to enter theSudan. There is a person at Aisboda masquerading as Major Marchand. His real hatme rs MacDougall. He was born of poor Lnt boneet parents on the banks of Loch Lomoud and was present at the battle of Orudurman as a corporal of the Cameron bighlanders. The sirdar knows that he is a fraud ; so do all who accompanied the expedition to Fashoda ; so does Lord Salisbury. The secret history of this extraordinary affair is as follows: The prime minister has had many rebuffs from France, and he has been eager to discover a method of scoring off that redoubtable diplomatic adversary. If Major Marchand were only be be discovered up the Nile, and Lord Salisbury were to refuse to concede an inch of Nile territory to the French, the wished for triumph would be granted. Hasty cipher telegrams passed between Omdurmaa and Downing street, and there was concocted this amazing plot of the imaginary Marchand. Failing the real Marchand, the man MacDougall, who bore a strong facial resemblance to the French explorer, and who was induced to play the part by promise of substantial reward, was to take bis place. France is hoodwinked, and England stands firm. The whole secrecy of the Fashoda business, the sirdar's ambiguous telegrams, the scraps of information doled out to newspaper men at Cairo, are now explained. They were intended to pave the way for the sensation caused by the publication of the dispatches. London Morning. Kitchener a Man of Resources. General Sir Herbert Kitchener, the sirdar commanding the Anglo-Egyptian expedition in the Sudan, is evidently a man of resource if a story told of him be true, says a current magazine. The sirdar is a tall, dark skinned man, who in disguise would easily pass for a native, and his knowledge of the character of the tribes and of their language gives him an advantage in dealing with the people. At one of bis camps on the Nile, so runs the story, two Arab date sellers were on a certain occasion arrested, hei "ALL TUGHT, SESTRT." I I ing suspected of being spies. They were confined in the guard tent, and were not long left alone, for soon after their 1 detention a third Arab prisoner was un ceremoniously bundled into the tent. Thereupon an animated jabbering began, and was carried on for a few minutes. The two prisoners were by nc means reticent in the preseuce of one of their own race, who was, like themselves, a prisoner, and they let their tongues wag fast. After a few minutes' conversation the sentry was surprised to see the latest arrival draw aside the door and step out. "All right, sentry," he said, "I am j going to the general." It waa Kitchener, and he bad himself investigated the case to see that justice was done. A few minutes more passed, and again the door was opened. This time an orderly appeared. He handed a spade to each of tfce prisoners, and they were then niarehe.l outside, made to dig their own graves and shot. They were, in truth, as had teen suspected, spies, and the general had convinced himself of the fact. Schley Waa Upset. Even heroes get upset. Admiral Schley was recently the guest of a large part of Philadelphia of as much of it aa could fill one of its theaters. He sat in a box with Colonel .McClnre, and every movement he made was watched by the thousands in the place. If he took a glass of water, they applauded. If he bowed to an acquaintance, they applauded. If he smiled, they applauded. In fact, the whole evening was an incessant ovation. But Schley's defeat came at the end of the second act. He arose with his neual grace and started to the next box to call oa friends, but be bad not taken two steps before a deep bass voice from the upper gallery rolled forth, "Let's 11 go out and take a beer," placing the accent ca the "all." The hero collapsed, sank in a chair and shook with fcughter, while the audience shrieked.
