Not since 1880 have Indian Itepub lioans made as pood a showing in off year as they made last Tuesday an Charlie Lmdis, one of Indiana's brifjhteit congressmen, is re-elected by an increased ruijority in the ninth district. Off year euts no figure in Indiana's congressional delegation. The Republicans of this state elect the same number of congressmen this year that they elected in 18!W. It is settled beyond qiestion that the Republicans will have a clear niaority of l.'J over all opposition in the house. In the senate the Republican majority will be IS. The senatorial question in this s'ate will now have renewed interest for Republican candidates since it is known that Senator Turpie's seat will be occupied by a Republican after the 4th of March. The term for which the appellate Tuesday will end in two years as that is me iiii... made by act of the legislature. But it is not unlikely that a bill will be introduced in the next legislature repealing that act. Should such a bill pass it would extend the term of the appellate court o the time of the next general election making it four years. Mr. James Hooker and Mr. W. W. Douglass are agents of the BowenMernll company for the sale of Fonlke's life of Morton, aud are now canvassing the city. This book oucLt aud no doubt will have a large sale in this locality, both on account of the subject and the merit of the work. Another reason why it should have a large sale is the fact that the profits are to go to tho widow of Senator Mor ton. Our picture, taken from Harper's Weekly, will give you a fair idea of how our soldiers are fed in the Philippines. On a wharf at Cavite are the large store houses, and nearby at anchor the huge transports lay ready to discharge or take on cargo. You can see the large ,roup of quartermasters of the d.fferent regiments all patiently waiting to receive the ra tions. When this picture was taken the number of rations to be distributed was something like lJj.Wy. These rations are carted away by the oflieers to the different stations, and there pre partd and distributed. Saw, TO MISIMKSS. The following from the New York Mail and Express is saying tne correct thing at the right time: ltie wnoie country, eager acd ex Pectant, stands upon the edge of period of unexampled activity i& trade and industry. All conditions are fav orable to a mighty expansion of wealth-making enterprise. The ele ments or prosperity abound on every hand and in every neighborhood, and it needs only the touch of genius acd energy to arouse them to productive achievement. The wealth of this tion. not only imwgy'and material rMiTes, but in men and opportuni ties, is the envy of the world. It is the land of gigantic projects and high acnieveaieats, ani now, with its domain enormously enlarged, its prestige sublimely exalted and its fields for manly endeavor broadening to the east and to the west, the genius and daring of the people have only to as eert themselves to make the closing year of the century the golden period of American prosperity and progress. "Therefore, let us all to business! iend tne grumblers and pessioi sts to the rear, and bring the stout-hearted, clear-headed, aggressive American optimi-t to the front. He is the man for the hour. It is he who, failing to find an opportunity, creates one and who, by his breezy, chetrfol, irresistable manner of executing Tast undertakings serves as a constant inspiration to the younc manhood of today. Who is lord of the universe above the Common ManT He has had showered upon him honors upon honors, until he can consistently envy no one not even God Himself. There is i o tiiLe or season wh jn the homtre of all the reft of Nature to Man is mor striking than now. Has he a tate for pageantrv in which he is the exalted and central figure? L -t him walk or ride down a shady street Oa either hand stand sentinels, not in dull, rusty coats and with dogged mi-u, but the very sing?, qieens. princes and lords of the vegetable kingdom stand to attend our little Man Thev are clad in trappings as gorgeous as the eunset yellow, red, purple, brown and green, wiii'e at their feet is a rich velvet carpet as brilliantly verdant as if there had been a summer-long shower of emeralds. It is a magnificent pageant, consisting of our Man and his reverential courtiers tbt gracefully bow and wave to him their hands and dazzling plumes without once showing him the rude familiarity of a touch. Thi seasons are full of honors for Man; full of suh little state occasions gotten up in his honor, when nature's own bet nectar is on tap for him in springs and babbling streams, and when fruits that the gjds themselves might envy him, hmg temptingly within his reach and beg the honor even of being destroyed by him Yet the autumn the nectar is ten thousand times sweeter than, and has more of God's own intoxication in it; the canopy of blue silk with white ostrich feathers and yak-tails, arranged high above him, is lovelier by day with the golden arrows of sunlight and infinitely grander by night with the tinra of stars and the still, still ocean of t moonlight that steeps the universe and of magic, while the" mu3i clangs and throbs everywhere. And there is a new and rustling carpet beneath his feet; a new air blowing about his face; a new, softening aud subduing blue in the near distance that protects his "eyes from the strain of involuntarily probing into the remote details of the wooded or housedotted landscape. It is one grand symphony of ruby, garnet, emerald, amber and turquoise witu s low-white fleets from the clonds and high lights supplied by the nfl ction of sunlight trom pool, slate root or window. And as his dty ends with a perfect climax of splendor in the western sky, a rioting in gorgeousness of coloring and gracefulness of form, he envies nothing God has made. Nay, more he even feels, wit bout the slightest suspicion of irreverence, that the lot of God Himself is not to be compared with his own. For man cannot only exercise the God-like power of loving mankind and natnte, but he can also grandest of privileges look up with reverence and thankfulness to a Superior Being who made h'.m capable of enjoying beauty and then, withholding his bounty, gave him infinite beauty to erj y. THE OLD COMRADE'S VlSIT. When the stata G. A. K. encampment was held here, some time ago, a funny thing happened that did not find its st q lei till within a few weeks last past. A certain hotel keeper of this city who was in the aimy, had as

Lis guest a man whom he regarded tte savior of his life at one period f their arnaj service. The man was his guest of honor, in spite of the fact that he came from a little one-hore town in an adjoinicg county, and the debt of gratitude made the hotel man rive his guest the test in the house. When the visitor first arrived, the ex comrade said: "Now I'm just as busy as I can be, haven't even tirce to speak to my wife, and you can just make yourself at hme unti1 I get some leisure. I will see you after awhile."
This was agreeable, and the old chap did so. After awhile the hotel man bad some leisure and the rural conirsda and benefactor ate with hint. They talked ovr old times in the fcld way ana enjoyed it. - Now that apparently eDded the incident, but appearances were deceitfulSome time sir.ee a traveling man who makes this point was t"llirg to a gentleman in this city the t-tory he had heard an old farmer tellirg at one' of the smaller towns. It happened to be the town where the life saving com rade resides. The old man was over heard telling to a crowd of admiring listeners the following story: I "Iimeo' the 'campment, I weat down t' liicbmond t' see old Comrade Tell ye he's livin' in etyje down there, but he haint changeda bit. Lives in a great big house an' has 'bout fortf servants runnin round therf doiu' whatever he tells 'em id But he's jast the same ol feller. fl tuck me in jest like we wuz ekalsagio, aa' when we set down t' dinner in a une dinin7 room one o' them nigger servants fetched in a program b 8 ys'taketh t o ..k awy an' bring evei thing ye ve got in ta house,' he says. Swears jert like he nst ter, too.". -i Thus it would appear that the old comrade thought the hotel was tot private residence of the prop) itt Jr. and that the whole coterie of servants was uly the stafi! of the family's private help. SINGULAR STATEMENT.
From Mrs. Rajxk to Mrs. Plnkham. The following letter to Mrs. Pink- j ham from M ra- M- Kixc, No. 2,334 i East Susquehanna Ave., Philadelphia, Pa., is a remarkable statement of relief from ntter discouragement. She j says: " I never can find words with which to thank you for what Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound has done for me. " Some years ago I had womb trouble and doctored for a long time, not seeing any improvement. At times I would feel well enough, and other times was miserable. So it went on until last October, I felt something terrible creeping over me, I knew not what, bat kept getting worse. I can hardly explain my feelings at that time. I was so depressed in spirits that I did not wish to live, although I had everything to live for. Had hys teria, waa very nervous; could not sleep and was not safe to be left alone. Indeed, I thought I would lose my mind. No one knows what I endured. 1 continued this way until the last of February, when I saw in a paper a testimonial of a lady whose case was similar to mine, and who had been cured by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I determined to try it, and felt better after the first dose. I continued taking it, and to-day am a well woman, and can say from my heart, 'Thank God for such a medicine." Mrs. Pinkham invites all suffering women to write to her at Lynn, Mass., for advice. All such letters are seen and answered by women only. the great western metropolis. The -tory of the play is effective, although ! -ensational and filled with thrilling episodes. There is more Catarrh in this section of te country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Sci ence has proven catarrh to be a consti tutional disease, and, therefore, re quires cout-t tutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. It is of course a popular thing to agitate against corporations and companies but councilmen should be proof against a clamor which might be at inj istice and do more damage than goxl.
