Speaking of this matter the Indianapolis Journal sayt: At the list municipal election 2.500 voter disfranchised themselves in marking their ballot. Of these 2,500 three-fourths were Republicans who undertook to vote fo' some candidate on the Democratic ticket. There is a stranire misconception about the marking of ballots. For instance, an intelligent man was telling, a few days since, how he marked his ballot to vote for on? man on the Democratic ticket. "I put an X in the circle with the eagle," he said; "then I put an X against the Democratic candidate's name, and then, to make sure, I scratched the name of his opponent on the Republican ticket." A few days ago a Democratic business man in this city told Republican candidate on the state ticket that he pro posed to vote for h'm. WHAT IT MEANS.

Scne cf the Dangers in Trying Democratic Policies. VT-i.-n rce casts hi vote for the Repnblitau state, congressional and county tlckut this fall he will vote to sustain a national policy that, while protecting home iudustry, has brought about au era of glorious pr p. ?ruy and patriotism. Any check to thce condition, through a policy of the unlimited coinage of silver, the restoration of tariff for revenue reform or the curta-.luieut in the least of the right of the United States to be sole arbiter of what she has won by war, would be nnprocressive. unpatriotic and in the end disastrous to the couutry's destiny. The ooreibility of such disaster attends everything the Democratic party propose. Anions the possibilities of Democratic experiments is the loss of a rapidly growing exportation from the United States of iron and steel products, whicn in 130 were foi.000,000 less than the importations. Thrs year tbe value of our iron and steel products sold to foreign consumers has reached $30,000,000. It is better to hold to the policy that has developed prosperity than to experi ment with one that would develop risks. One of these risks, for example, might be the destruction of the cotton mills iu tbe United State'. That aloue would mean the steppage of f300.0iW.WK) circulation, the wrecking of 300.WK),tXX) capital invested and throwiug out of eniplovment of l.V),000 workers. Or it might mean tne stoppage of our progress iu iron aud steel manufactures, which anuually turn out a product that keep over $400.WW,000 iu circulation, furnish investment for a like amount of capital aud employs 300, WX) hands. They furnish sustiuauce for l.WW.OOO people. Or it might moan detriment to all branches of tuaunfacture and iudustry, driving capital away, throwing people oat of employment with all that implies in loss to farmers ami mechanics. The country J only two years away from such a deplorable condition of closed factorial, impoverished people and stagnated trade. It existed under the retrogress! e policy of Democracy; there was no relief except under the progressive pmiey of Republicanism. It was absolute confidence in the latter that rapidly brought uround every condition of prospentv the country now eniovs. A vote for u Democrat means the ultimate destruction of that prosperity. FOLLOW THE OPEN WAY. The trait of character which made Grant so successful, whea once he had entered upon his career, was. that he alwavs followed the way as it opened before him. There is a sound philosophy in such a habit, anil it is conducive to national success and greatness, as well as to that of an iudividnaL At present the way is opening to America iu the West Iudiej aud among the island of the Pacitic To hesitate to follow that way is like ttyiug in the face of Urbvi deuce.
