WASHINGTON LETTER.
A Story Told. on Xrs. Wewrich Hla Doe Didn't Know Him Tho Sentiment! Girl. ISpeckU Correspondence. A real estate agent reports that one of tbe most desirable houses in the northwest quarter has been engaged for the winter by an extremely wealthy woman from tbe middle west, and apro pos of the new plutocrat's corning to town gossips are repeating a story people out on her native heath tell. It happened out there a few years ago, and one of the dramatis person was a girl who has since married a Washington lawyer. Tbe wealthy woman was not at that time quite eo used to her riches as ebe is now, but she prided herself on knowing and doiug tbe correct thing. She evtu Imparted her knowledge to the less well informed on occasion. Once upon a day the gave a dinner party. The girl who is now the lawyer's wife was there. Coffee was 6erved in the most expensive cups you can imagine, and when tbe manservant presented tbe cugar bowl tbe girl I epeak of helped herself to a lump, using the pink tips of her dainty fingers instead of tbe sterling silver sugar tongs. The hot-tees observed the act, and, wishing to spare her other guests the humiliation of using eugar from tbe same dish and desiring also tocorrect the girl as delicate ly as might be. she ordered the manservant to take away the 6ugar and bring a fiesli supply. The girl guest smiled when she beard tbe order and went on calmly driuking ber coffee. When she bad emptied the cup, she raised it aud flung it deliberately into the fireplace, where it smashed into a thousand pieces. "I spoiled the sugar by touching it with my fingers," she said to tbe host ess, "and tbe cup which I have touched with my lips ia of course so hopelessly contaminated tbat it could never have been used again." Then she left the room. Eia Dosr Didn't Know Him. "It's pretty hard lines when a man's own pet dog won't recognize him, but growls and shows bis tee th and doesn't want to admit him to tbe bouse," said a retnruing District soldier the other dav, "but that's just what my dog port did when I got home. Everybody except port seemed glmi to set! me, but he seemed to bave entirely forgotten bis old master. Well, when I did get in tbe house and got a gsxxi, square look in a mirror and surveyed myself from head to fixt, I dirt ctly came to tbe conclusion that I bed no reason to blame the canine. I really lia:lu't seen myself good fur four mouths aud bad no kind of an idea what a shadow I cast. My face was biding behind a luxuriant growth of bushes and my forehead, the only portion exposed, was as black as the cook's. Added to this, my general make up of worn and soiled soldier's clothes and big slouch bat tattooed with various inscriptions and weighed down with oanteen and luggage, it was no wonder tbat my dog did not know me. The next day, after changing my raiment, vit-iting my old friend the tonsoriul artist and experiencing the luxury of a Turkish bath, I came home, and if you ever saw a delighted dog Sport was that animal. lie came jumping aud leaping after me and, after all, gave ui the most cordial welcome I received, and I haven't any complaint to make concerning the reception I got from my other friends." Those Sentimental Girl 3. Sentimental girls are stirring up con siderable emotion over a window dis play in a store on F street, while incidentally Private George A. Rudolph, First District of Columbia volunteers, is getting his full share of glory. All the war accouterments of tho young private, including not only bis poetic trousers, but also portions of raiment uot aa frequently exposed to the public aze, are strewn about m the show window in artistic disorder. The woolen blanket lies on the floor, while the poncho, the trousers and jacket are hung over a polo. A large crowd is constantly gathered at the window, ro peating the name of George A. Kudolph, as displayed on a largo sign. "Oh, how lovely! one of tne eeuti mental girls was heard to say. The question was asked whether she referred to brother Rudolph, to his trousers, nis poncho or some other garment. Among tha articles displayed is a handkerchief, which, as the sign explains, must have been procured by the irresistible Mr. Kudolph from a Cuban ladv. A cup taken from a San Juan officer, the cord and taseel from tbe hat of a Spanish captain, a pipe presented by a Cuban patriot, a pair of rosewood knives cut at San Juan Hill, together with tho ordinary utensils of a soldier on tho warpath, complete the array. Ecusecleaninz at tho Capitol. The capitol has undergone its annual summer and fall honsecleaning and renovating. Under the direction of the architect of the capitel, Mr. Edward Clark, many changes and improvements have taken place since congress adjourned. When the members of that body reconvene, they will observe that both tbe interior and exterior of the home of the national legislators have undergone a considerable change. The healing, lighting and ventilating arrangements huve been much improved, aud no efforts have been spared to place everything ia the capitol in shipshape condition, with modern conveniences and-appliances wherever it has been found that thev will conduce to the coi-fort cf the members of congress. Carl St hoflkijx THE KAISER'S COMPLIMENT. He WIU Adapt Onr Campalva 11fnrui For Ills t in 1'alratlae. Emperor William may bo considered to have paid a very marked compliment to tho United States that is to say, if there is any truth in the old saying according to which imitation is the most sinoere form of flattery, for he has adopted the campaign uniform of tho United States army far the use of him self and tho 90 members of his staff during his forthcoming trip to Pales tine. And so delighted is he with his appearance In his new brown holland rig that he spent the other morning in having no less than 40 photographs of himself taken thus attired. Tho cut of the coat, as well as tho color and tex ture of the material, is identical with that which is bei'jg used by the United States troops in Santiago, with this difference, that tbe facings, tho collars and cuffs, instead of being of yellow are of red, while tho shoulder straps, instead cf being, eo to speak, astride of the shoulder, run. as usual, ia the German army, from tbe collar to the shoulder edge and are of thick silver braid. Yellow high boots, a leather scabbarded sword and a pith helmet, such as is worn in the tropics, complete tbe outfit. Bnt not I see that I have omitted mention of the indispensable nether garments, without which the kaiser might risk being taken for ahighlander when he visits the Holy City of Jerusalem. These are of tbe Same yellow materials ns the coat. Eut, contrary to the advice cf competent - people, he in sists on having them, as tight fitting as possible, being very proud of the shape of his imperial legs. Now, any one who has been in tbe tropics knows full well tbat tight fitting garments are not only inconvenient and uncomfortable, but, one might almost add, impractica ble. It is therefore probable that long before the kaiser completes his pious pilgrimage he will Ito compelled to seek some secluded corner along the valley of the river Jordan or bv tbe shores of the Dead sea for the purpose of diverting himself of his tight fitting breeches und adopting in their stead the sensible loose fitting and extremely baggy ruling togs that are worn alike by American Hiid British officers when campaigning in tropical countries and which are also in use Lyall polo players. Washington Post. THE ASTOR BATTERY. General Grrrnr'a IHilli TPrate For Their On linn I r at Manila. General Franris V. Greene, who pass ed through Chicago tbe other day on his way to Washington, ha9 more than ordinary words of praise for tbe gallant ry of tbe men cf tho Astor battery in the final attack on Manila. "The Astor battery was not imme diately uuder my eye," said the gen eral, "bat I know what the boys did and bow tbey did it. Nothing could keep them back. Tbey were with General McArthur's brigade, and after they bad, from their position to the south of blockhouse No. 14, silenced the Spanish guns in the latter place they dragged their own guns through the mire to tbe blockhouse. When the charge was or dered upon the second blockhouse to tho northeast of No. 14, the men cf tho bat tery left their guns where they w ere and, drawing their revolvers, rushed upon tho enemy. There was a siiarp. fierce fight, but the men of tbe After battery appeared to enjoy it immensely and wero sorry when it was over. I never saw men more eager to fight. There was no reason save their own choice for their charging with tho infantry, as it was voluntary. "It showed the spirit which animat ed the men of tho battery and was the spirit which was unconquerable, for the members of tbe battery swept everything before thorn. I have nothing but praise for all the men ia front cf AlauUa, and I am not singling out this particular battery for the purpose of be stowing undue praise upon them, but it is not a usual thing for the members of a battery to leave their guns and join in a charge when they might as well remain behind." New ork Herald. One cf the brigntesc tnmgs said aoout the pro-Cuban war, or any other war, was dropped by "Fighting Joe Wheeler the other day at the Windsor hotel reception to Mrs. Grant in New York, "Tbe strength of American arms in war comes solely from the soldiers' memory of the women they have left behind." The old Foldier is as gallant as he is braT&. He has a happy faculty cf eaying tbe right thing at the right time and cf doing it. .New York
