Great interee-t is being manifested the country over iu the operations of the dynamite cruiser Vesnvroa in front of
Santiago. The guns of the Vesuvius are bronze steel tubes 16 feet long, noi including the breach opening and cartridge chamber. The shell is of highly brittle cast steel, corrugated inside so that it will break into pieces about 4-or h inches square aud 3 inches thick. This shell is the shape of a rocket bead and is exploded by at perfnssioa cap ro a priming tube fixed in the shell's point. It is guided by a steel rod 6 feet long, feathered like an arrow's shaft that it may fly comparatively true. There are three of these dynamite rubes on the Vesuvius, all the same length and 10, 12 and 15 inches in diameter. The largest size is the one used at Santiago. ; The chief difficulty in this weapon's case is that the guns are fixed and not movable, and the boat must be brought into a position where the artillery cin be used. The air in the 15 inch tube is compressed, so that 15 feet of it is iii three foot space. The breech of the gra is then opened, the projectile inserted and breech carefully locked.
