Lvery thing connected with the alley is in first-class sbape and will no doubt be a popular place of amusement. Today is the seventy-first birthday anniversary of Joseph C. Ratliff of this city. Father Time seems to have forgotten Mr. Ratliff in his yearly rounds, at least for some time, as he looks and carries himself with the energy of a man much younger. Many applications have been received by Superintendent T. A. Mott and also by member of the school board seeking the chair of German in the High seboo, leftl vacant by th withdrawal of Dr. Test. The school board has not yet considered the matter cf a successor to the place but wL'l do so some time before the opening of next term. On the evening of the Fourth there was a demonstration on the lawn at the home of Sharon Jones in West Richmond. A dog called "Don" be longing to Fred Marchant was there. and "Don" had acquired the proclivity of running after objects thrown. The other night a cocnon firecracker was thrown and "Don" immediately picked it up. At last reports he was alive, but that is about all. . .

Quite a large party left for there this morning, among whom were : Mrs. Walter Hutton and daughter, Mias Alice Winder, Walter Coale and family, Walter Doan and family, Mrs. Charles Kramer of Indianapolis and Dr. C. N. Haiold and family of Indianapolis. Ed. Thatcher and Orange Lemon and wife are already there. Albert Kennepohl of this city, who enlisted in a Tennessee regiment; has received a promotion to the position of corporal. Not in two decades has Milton had such a demonstration as that of Monday night. It was entirely impromptu. There was a band concert, fire-works and cannon crackers booming, all expressing the good feelings aroused by the news from Sampson and the patriotic sentiments which are apt to be given vent on our country's natal day. Frank Cummings will leave this week for Cincinnati, where he will join the fourth Kentucky regiment band. Mrs. D. P. Leibhardt of Washington, D. C, is the guest of Mrs. F. M. Jones and other friends. Charlie Parker had a fine horse badly lacerated last week by becoming entangled in a barbed wire fence. Mr. and Mrs Heming have returned from their western trip. Centerville. Our national holiday was observed here on a very large scale, much more so than was looked for on the bills. The cannon, pistol and fire cracker, ringing of bells, martial music, everything was brought into sound that the small boy could get hold of. In the evening a fine display of fire works was given. Only two slight accidents happened to mar the festivities of the day, and not a drunken person was seen. It was a hot time in the old town Monday night. Mrs. Cora K.
