It seems that foreign ships are going into Santiago harbor to take out the foreigners in the city. If they ean get in without injury fiom the mines Sampson's fleet ought to be able to do the same thing. Dispatches from Madrid indicate that the truth about Cervera's crushing defeat is boginning to dawn on the Spanish people. The Spanish papers are publishing the accounts of the dis aster from American sources and accepting them as substantially correct. The Republican members of council who a while back were opposed to the repeal of last year's ordinance ' on printing, n the score of economy, and who last night voted to award the city advertising to the highest instead of the lowest bidder, showed thereby that the economy spasm was a flimsy pretense. The Republican state committee met at Indianapolis yesterday and trans acted some important Waiooas. - It waa "'determined" tof recommend Senator Fairbanks for permanent chairman of the approaching state convention While tuere was no action taken with regard to the nomination of appellate 'judges it was understood that no such nomination would he male. 1 he supreme court has virtually decided that the incumbents will hold over. Some of the Indianapolis building associations are kicking hard against the assessments of the local board of review. They refuse to comply with the order of the board to show their books and propose to fight this point in the courts. The instructions laid down by the state tax board for the assessment of building and loan asso (nations require the county board to assess the paid-up, prepaid and run ning stock of the associations. It 14. a little uncertain which of the three, Admiral Sampson, Coamodore Schley or Captain Wainwright, history will settle down on as the real hero of the Cervtra annihilation. Sampson was the commander-in-chief, Schley was the immediate commander in the battle, but Wainwright was the fighter. The Gloucester which he commanded covered herself with laurels. Wainwright was the executive oflijer of the ni-iaieu aiaine ana he no doubt remembered her as he poured volley after volley into Cervera's fleet from his little six-inch guns. The semi-annual apportionment of the school funds collected in the different counties was announced yesterday by the state board of public instruction. The report shows a slight decrease in collections of taxes, reducing the per capita amount for each pupil from $1.43 to $1. -II. Wayne eounty's apportionment is $14,733.65. The county pays to the state fond $24,321.07, being $9,563 42 more than we get bacE. Allen county (Fort Wayne) gets about $0,000 more than she pays into the state fund. Allen reports more than twice as many school chil dreu as Wayne while the amount of school revenue collected from her is nt quite $5,000 more than th s county pays. The trouble with Wayne ii that her school population is not in ro portion with her a e.ilta. The con dition of Allen and a number of other o tuties in the state is the reverse Hence we have to help educate the children in those counties. The Sure La Grippe Cure. Letter from the Famous Underground Railroad Agent, Written on the Day John Brown Was Executed. Editor Palladium. In culling over an old drawer a few week ago I came across a lot of letters from Levi Coma, G. W. Julian and the widow of Bailey of the old "National Era," and the enclosed histor ical letter from Levi Coffin has some points I think the public would be interested in reading. I ser d it to the Palladium because it is the oldest paper published in Richmond and because its editors, Holloway & Davis, were as bitter as gall in all the anti-slavery movement from 1840 to the formation of the Republican party and had to even beg off from publishing some of the replies to their thrusts and charges in their eauoriais against tnai move-
raeut. The history of the monthly month. Next seventh day week will meeting mentioned in Coffin's case was be our monthly meeting. I mean about this. In the fore part of the , Drift wood, not ours, for we are not decade of 1840 to '44 the anti-slavery 'yet members, and do not know how it movement was at its white heat, and will turn; tomorrow week perhaps Coffin took part in its deliberations will tell the story. I suppose both reIndiana yearly meetiLg was down on ports will come at the same time if all its movements and nsed all its ' they forward them promptly, but what authority to prejudice its members the monthly meeting will do I cannot against the movement, and used its -tell. John Thomas, son of Frances, legislative authority to put it down, ( ja an elder and sits head of Sand creek opening the breach wider and wider J meeting, and is full of zeal, and has until 1842 and 'l'l a division took place, 'j-eceived letters from his father and the anti-elavery body set up a'oa the subject. I am yearly meeting of their own. Levi . informed since the monthly meeting at Coffin, among hundreds of others, ' New Garden, the purport of them I was disowned. In after years the know not, he may be influenced and
mother chnrch ceased its opposition and prejudice and saw its error and opened the door for the return of its persecuted and proscribed brethren and Collin applied for membership. In that dav of ehnreh nnlitv when a mem- ! ber was disowned in a monthly meeting and moved in the limits of another and applied, and that meeting was satisfied, the case according to discip-! line then had to be referred to the monthly meeting where he was disowned for its consent or acknowledgement that he was rightfully disowned. This was the law in Coffin's case and he refused to make any acknowledge-j ment, and the application hung fire for months, a majority being willing, and a small minority of three being op - posed. Finally this monthly meeting occurred in a remote quarter of its limits on a cold, blustry, snowy day, so the opposition failed to attend and Coffin and his wife were admitted as members of the church. I In this warfare there were no cnarges oi any iaiseaoctrme preierreu , 1 J A -1 against the anti-slavery party. The ' eharges were taking an active part and opening their meeting and school houses for anti-slavery meetings and j mixing with the world. The active, abolitionists ot that day who stool the charges of cranks and the pelting of . stones and rotten eggs are now counted heroes and are honored for their heroism. Daxiel Huff. WF.DDISOTON, IXD.. ) 12 month 1st 1859. J My Dear Friend Daniel Huff Thy letter of the 20th ult. came duly to hand. It was truly a welcome messenger and thankfully received, you cannot imagine how much good it does us away down here in Egypt to get letters from our friends. !' W received one at the same time from our esteemed friend Wm. Hough, all truely interesting and satisfactoty. Through your letter we got a pretty general history of the workings or doings of the monthly meeting at Arba in my case. I feel very grateful to my friends, unworthy as I am, it is bumbling to my feelings to find that I still have true and sympathizing friends. I desire to walk worthy of their confidence, though I feel poor and worthless and that my day of usefulness was over, if I ever did do any good. I may have been deceived in myself. Good works and the applause of men will not save us. I have endearore I to feel for those in bonds as bound with them, and devoted much time and means in endeavoring to relieve the sufferings ot the poor and downtrodden, to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, shelter the outcast, Ac, and have sacrificed much ia endeavoring to sustain the free labor cause and to bear a constant testimony against the sin of slavery, but all this I am well aware will avail nothing of itself in the trying hour that is approaching to us all; we must know of a certainty of passing from death unto life and having our names written in the Lambs book of life. We may perform many good works and yet live in the outer court. Perhaps it is all right and for our good that our worldly means is all used up and we are left in a dependent state in our old age, and what we have done, (even if it was right) forrotten or not remembered by many. If our worldly means is gone, either by ac eident or benevolence the world will frown upon u, and we sink in the estimation of the masses of the people e nave nothing lett then to rely up on but the mercies of our Divine Master. Oh, that we may be faithful to the end and not murmur is my sincere desire. This is the day of ex ecution of that brave, that nobis, that good (though mistaken or unwise in bis plans as we think) man John Brown It may be that he was an instrument in the hands of the Almighty to commence the great work of the deliverance of the oppressed and of the scourge of the south, for certainly a heavy scourge hangs over that dark land. I believe that every drop of John Brown's blood that they spill will raise up a man against them. This should be a solemn day with all th true friends of the oppressed. I feel deeply on the occasion, for I think this is only the beginning of the end. A terrible dsy i . SIGK CIEADAGIJE Positively cored try these tattle Pills. They also rrfirre Distress from TysDeisa. Slavery, I fear, will end in blood. I am a peace man and have always opposed anything in the shape of w.r. so that there waa no danger or anytning from me deleterious being found in John Brown's budget. I I did not expect to fill more than one page when I commenced writing, and now I find myself at the bottom of the half sheet and have scarcely begun to write on the subjects I intended to write about, but nirmind is thoroughly turned in another direction. If I write any more I must take another half Fheet- I intended to write William Hough also, but this mast suffice. Thou wilt please let him read this. j may kick against our reception. I caa not tell. John and his wife were both on the committee that visited us ' when the request was made, and be haved nicely then. We had quite good time of it. Not one word said about the separation, but much en couragement given and much sym pathy expressed, and the interview closed with a powerful and remarkable supplication by one of the committee a woman Friend from Sycamore pre parative, some twenty miles distant She is but young in years and younger in her public appearances had but seldom appeared in public meetings. She was a stranger to us. I j0 not remember her name, but I well , remember that we were all melted into tears, and cemented together in one . bundle of love: nobody said anything ' about an acknowledgment from us but I think we were all willing to acknowledge that we bad been fed to aether and watered together from the heavenlv fountain, and the committee made a clear and satisfactory report to ... .. . 1 . the monthly meeting, with wnicn toe monthly meeting heartily united and sent it up to New Garden where Fran cea and Nathan clogged the wheels and stopped the carnage. Well, good may come of it: let us not complain How it will now turn at Driftwood I know not. I do not feel much anx hetv about it. 1 believe I have done mv part as Tar as i nave been favored to see or to know, therefore I feel willing to leave the matter entirely to r nends, let it turn as it may. I can not be of much benefit to society, and I desire not to be a dead weight or a stumbling block in the way of others With love to thee and wife and all my friends, 1 remain as evjfc- thy friend. It's astonishing how good news will spread, r rom every ward and street we hear of our people talking about the workings of the little conqueror Merit and honorable methods receive their just reward. So many cases are cropping that it is next to impossible to investigate them all, but we have taken a few in hand and give them publicity for the benefit of our read era. Our representative obtained the following statement of facts, in a per sonal interview, lhey are true in every particular and no stronger evi dence can be obtained than home en dorsement. Mrs. J. M. Hutchinson, 411 Kan dolph street, says: "I have used Doan's Kidney Pills and hae no hesi tation in recommending them as splendid remedy for affections of the kidneys.
