Time only enhances the lasting value and demonstrates anew the true significance of these inspiring patriotic observances. hatever may be tne character of its temporary prob lems, this liberty loving nation is not and never can be forgetful of the immortal heroes of the civil war. For those ho served, as well as for those who fell, at Gettysburg now so peaceful and so beautifully adorned with the highest creations of the sculptor's art our reunited fellow-country men, without regard to locality, creed or political faith, have an abiding re spect and the most cordial esteem. Today those who contended on th:s historic field nearly thirty-five years ago and their descendants are muster ing nnder the same dig, enthusiastic in their devotion to the Nation and

"I The debt of gratitude which we owe to the Nation' defender can never be completely repaid either by thia or future generations, yet the acknowl J edgment of thin obligation each year, in various forma and in a multitude of places throughout this broad land, pur i flea onr idea and brings us all nearer together in sympathy of sentiment and unity of purpose. No time could be more appropriate than the present to approach in a fitting spirit these sacred themes of the love of country and the rights of man. Generations eoxe and go, and the issues for which they fought and died, soon pass into history. JJut the living principles of undertakings worthily a - complished, for an unselfish purpose, abide forever and guide us to a nobler destiny and Mill greater achievements as a nation. Very sincerely yours. William McKinley. Obituary. Hiram Suplee was barn April Gth, 1S1G, in Chester county, Pennsylvania, and d e l May 27th, 1S98, aged 82 years, 1 month and 21 days. He was : tbe eon of Peter and Kachael Suplee who came from historic V alley j Forge" and settled in Chester county, Pennsylvania, at the close of the Revo lutionary war, where they raised a family of ten children. He was tha youngest of the family and survived all of bis brothers and sisters save one, Mrs. Sarah Dorian, of Waterloo, Iowa. When a young man he bade adieu to relatives and f riends.came west, and in the year 1838 located in Whitewater (then Hillsborough), Wayne county. Indiana, where he lived for almost sixty yea's. Suplee ot Texas, Mrs. Jennie Jones of Glenkarn, Ohio, and Mrs. Belle Harlan of Lynn, Indiana, with eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. In his domestic life he was kind, a, tret and unassuming; in business, affairs, strictly honorable, and in publie affairs, not an enthusiast, but inflexibly firm in that which he believed to be right and just. But his life account is now closed, and while he enjoyed a comparatively healthy life for four score years, ho realized when he reached that limit the declaration of the P-alniist, "Yet ia there strength, labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away," to be true.
