It is a mistake to imagine that a nation's fighting men are recruited from the lowly that the men ol wealth and culture would rather stay lit home. History has proved this, and history, true to tradition, is repeating herself. In our war with Spain the mf-ti f millions have come to the front. They have not alme offered their money to the government ; they have offered their lives if need be. They want tc fight. And many of them come of fight ing stock. And many of them are train ed athletes, college bred mei who know that peculiar tingling of the blood which seems only to come to a man when he get into a big football game. And many of them have seen rough lifi on the western plains, or have explored wild stretches of foreign lands. There are no two men more eager r fight for their country than William Astor Chanler and Theodore Roosevelt The former is estimated to be worth a million, and the latter a half million. Roosevelt's "Rough Riders' will be unique. New York's men of -fashion will ride flank to flank with the untamed cowboys of the wild and woolly west. And there will be no lines drawn. One man will be as good as another in this organization, physical strength and endurance being the only qualification. It would be difficult to estimate accurately the wealth represented by the men who have joined Roosevelt. Teddy him self, as I have said, is worth half a mil lion, but there are men in his command who could buy him out several times over. Among those who will don the brown duck suit and wide sombrero which constitute the uniform of the "Rough Riders" are 89 young men from the east. Just how the 300 cowboys will regard their "tenderfoot" comrades is a matter of con jwture. Two young New Yorkers, when they left for the south, carried their polo sticks and golf cluls with them. What do you suppose a typical cowboy would think of a golf playing cavalryman? And yet it is safe to say that when it comes right down to the point of real courage and endurance the kid gloved element will not be found wanting At any rate, the cowboys have a great admiration for Roosevelt, who has proved himself, in their eyes, to tx" the real thing. Ho has had lots of ex perience in the west and has shown himself to be a man of nerve. And as for the others, any chappie in the Knickerbocker club will tell you that they will more than hold their own. William JLiffany nasnimseir neen a cowboy, in an amateur sort of way, out in Montana, and that in the eyes of the real "Rough Riders, " should give him a certain prestige over his compan ions. Moreover, he comes of fighting stock. He is a nephew of the late Mrs. August Belmont, and is consequently a grandnephew of Commodore Perry, whose achievement on Lake Erie is one of the landmarks of American history.,-. , Erranllv well known as young men or wealth and fashion are Reginald Ronalds, Woodbury Kane, James T. Burden, Jr., and Craig Wadsworth. Each of these took his own servant, although it is doubtful if the quartet of valets will lie retained. Both Woodbury Kane and his brother, Nicholson Kane, are worth in the neighborhood of $ 250,000. Nicholson Kane, who is an Annapolis man, is now seeing service on the St. Paul as special aid to Captain Sigsbee Woodbury Kane is a noted polo player. and alao made a reputation for himself on the football field at Harvard. Young Wadsworth is a scion of the wealthy Geneseo family of that name. He is a great rider. Reggy Ronalds is, as everybody knows, a sou of Mra Pierre Lorillard Ronalds, who lives in London. As a football player he was held in high esteem at Yale. And there are others in this gallant troop of "Ropgh Riders!' who are equal ly well known. Hamilton Fish, Jr., is a fighter from way back. His career in New Y ork is too well known to require more than a passing mention. His operations have heretofore been confined to impudent waiters, unreasonable jmlicemen and the like, but now his lelligerencv is about to take on a new form and if he can only be brought to imagine that the Spanish army is composed of Tenderloin policemen and wait rs he can be depended upon to do fearful execution. Two millionaires who offered to raise and equip regiments for the gov ernment, butwhose suggestions we not approved, are John Jacob Astor and William Astor Chanler. Both of these men, however, have received appointments.
