Against tha Majesty of tha Law as Dis

There were several cases in police court this morning. George Westlake was arrested yesterday in his usual

condition, and was placed behind the

bars by Patrolman Betzold. Westlake had had some difficulty with Captain

White, of the Brunswick, and had al

most come to blows with him. He had had a number of good-sized stones in his pocket with which apparently tc bombard Mr. White had occasion

bf en found for so doing. The policeman

placed hin in a state of blockade, how

ever, before the heavy guns were

trained on Brunswick fort. George was fined five and costs this morning and went down. George made an eloquent speech, and almost broke the

congressional record for rapid speak

ing.

William Muey was arrested for permitting minors to play pool in the

place of which he has charge, and is

to be tried this evening at

o'clock, when the cases of Eddie

Greer and others are to be tried. The prosecutor was so buisily engaged in

were on the stand yesterday afternoon,

and a number of others this morning.

The undertaker and others were ex

when found, the nature of the wounds.

etc., and this morning the coroner of

the county, E. P. Seward, Sheriff John

James, ex-Sheriff Macy, Mark Modhn

and others were examined and cross-

examined. Their testimony is all for

the state, and is very strong toward

the conviction of the man.

The man lhrawlev is as cool in

court as a cucumber on ice. His ae

tions are almost unparalleled in the

history of riminal cases. He does not seem unconcerned as if he did not

know what is going on, but rather

takes the sort of interest he would be

supposed to take were some one else

and not himself the party involved in the trouble. He watches the witnesses,

listens to their testimony, and when

ever occasion offers he laughs at their

remarks. This morning he watched

with the utmost interest the picture of the murdered man, when it was

brought into court. It was a life

sized picture, and is said to be natural

as life. When it was shown .Thrawley

had to stretch his neck considerably

to see it from where he was sitting,

but he looked at it with as little

emotion as if he had been looking at a

show poster. There was no sign of

feeling in his face, and semingly not

the slightest concern or fear as to the

consequence now or hereafter. Even

accidental killing is supposed to have some effect on a man's conscience but

it appears that the killing of his neigabor has had none on John Thrawley.

in short, she would be called homely, and the story ot the infatuation of Mr.

Shoemaker for her is less credible to one who sees Ler. Mrs. Shoemaker is

also in attendance at the trial, and is a good-looking young girl." It is understood that the two had been married

but a short time when the tragedy oc

curred, and that the young widow was

almost crazed with grief over the af fair.

There is a good sized lobby present

each day of the trial, and many inter

esting developments are expected be

fore the case comes to a conclusion

Many Henry county people are in the city in attendance, some as witnesses,

others as mere spectators. The brother-

in-law of shoemaker was one of the

witnesses yesterday.

Sentiment as gained from the per

sons who attend, are much in favor of Shoemaker, and it cannot be said that

the appearanca and behavior of Thrawley have added anythiag to the favor with which he is regarded. The attorneys engaged on both sides are good ones, reputed fighters' and investiga

tors, and it will be a Ight to the end

The skull of Shoemaker was exhibi

ted in court this afternoon with the

bullet wounds in it. Inere ws no

perceptible change in the countenance

of Thrawley when the grim relic was exhibited, and he looked at it with the same childlike, casual interest that he had witnessed other things. A Henry county physician is testifying as we go to press. There are sixty-two Henry county witnesses in the city today.
