C, where Mr. Mooney is attempting to secure an appropriation for the Omaha exposition. Among those who returned from Columbus lat evening were: Harry Stillenger, Joseph L Smith, Benjamin Starr, H. H. Hoover, Sample Byers, Mrs. Will Blose, Mrs. Nathan Lamar, Mrs. Rutus Newman, Mrs. Charles Unthank, Mrs. Dr. Ferling, Mrs. I. C. Doan and Roy Smith. Witness Examined. The gra d jury yesterday examined some twelve or more witnesses in the O'Neil case and today they have been steadily at work examining other wit nesses. The work of couise is all secret, and nothiag of the examinations will be known until the report is made to the circuit court. Something New by Charles Francis Jenkins, of This City A Second Edison. A new service to humanity is to be rendered through the employment cf moving pictures. Audiences of deaf mutes are to be addressed from the eacvas by the speaker many miles away, possibly on the other side of the globe. The perfection of this accomplish ment is due to the efforts of a Rich mond boy, C. t rancis Jenkins, now resident of Washington. He employs ine lamuiar moving picture apparatus. except mat wide mm is found much more satisfactory and was therelore adopted. For this pur pose 11 was louod necessary to build a camera capable of mak ing portrait picture ribbons, no mean problem in itself. But a machine was soon constructed which entirely suited the conditions. In making the demonstration Mr. Jenkins seated himself b ifore the t amera and began repeating it- t WT1 ... - i an 1 rt u prayer. wnen ne Had hn ished the current was turned off. the U'm removed to the da.k room and de veloped. From this negative a positive was printed and run throrgh the pro jecting lantern, which produced the picture upon the canvas in the well known manner. The picture was simply a portrait to the laymen presenting nothing out or the ordinary, but to the educated deaf mute the moving lips on the canvas proved or the utmost in terest, conveying to the his trained eye tne words or the origi lal supplication lo test the integrity of the reading the Dim was secretly reversed and run through the lantern backward to the erideut bewilderment of the reader who but a moment before had de ciphered the message so readily. Several seat ces were had later at which large audiences were entertained, the pictures being reproduced each time with wonderful success. A-rangi ments are being made to have Mr. Jenkins to give a demonstra tion before tha educational congress which meets in Washington in Julv in older that the advantages of the system may be more widely known.
