For the City Officers Some May ba Reduced, Other a May Not be. Th6 finance committee did not, as has been stated elsewhere by another paper, take up the matter of salaries for city councilaien and officers at their first meeting, on last Friday night. They arranged other matters, but will not discuss the matter of salaries until the next meeting, preceding the first meeting in the month of June. At the meeting last week some one present suggested that the matter of salaries be taken up, but the committee did not do so, as they had not time nor inclination to take it up out of its turn and give it the attention
due other things. There has been suggested the advisability of raising the mayor's salary back to its foimer figure, $1,400, raiA tbeusalaries of the fire chit-f and the city engineer, cler
and treasurer, and then make a ten per cent, cut on all salaries, including that of the councilmen. This plan does
n.w) with the approbation or me
majority of council, as has been in formally determined, and it will not be adopted. It is all but assumed that ho alarv nf the niavor will remain
as it is, unless, in case it is ra;sed to $1,400. he will formally agree to cover all fines from police court and elsewhere into the city treasury. There have been other plans suggest
ed, and at the next meeting or me council the matter will be taken up and
definitely settled tor anotner year. There has been a strong and popular demand for the reduction of the city attorney's salary, and some action will be taken on that matter also, with
the settlement of all the salary matters at the next council meeting after tonight.
This Year la Greatly In Excess of That Paid In Last Year The Amount Paid In and the Dtcrease In the Rate In Thl Clt An Encouraging Showing. The county treasurer's deputy, J. A. Spekenhier, this morning gave to the public, through the medium of the city reporters, a statement with regard to the payment of the first installment
of the state and county tax at that office. The statement is of the most en
couraging nature, and shows that th
times among those paying that sort of
revenue are steidily and certainly improving. The amount of such tax shown in the May settlement is, for this year, $241,378 ID. In last year's May's settlement it was $230,947, showing an increase in favor of this year of $0,431 19. In considering this increase there is another point to be kept in mind that make the showing even better than it appears on its face. This in
crease in payment is made on a rate
that is lower than that of last year. Had the increase " been made on a higher rate, it would have been nothing remarkable. But when the increase is had on a lower rate, the increase means all the more. The rate this year in the city, for slate and county purposes, is 12 cents less on each $100 than it was last year, and and the city valuation of property for taxation is $11,CC0,0S3. The decrease therefore at the rate of 12 ceats on each $100 would amount to $13,912. The increase in taxes then, at the old rate would have been the actual gain plus what the additional gain would have been with the old rate which is $20,423.19. That is what the gain would have baen at the old rate, had the same proportion of people paid their taxes. The increase merely shows, then, that a larger number of people paid in their taxes than on the previous year, and the number
of those so paying was so great that
in spite of the decreased rate the
amount of taxes on practically the
same valuation was larger. S B. Steward Dead. S. B. Steward, formerly of this city, died this afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home in Indianapolis. He had been

and reasonably so, a grave offense. The man arrested was Charles Fisher, of Harris street. West Richmond, ami his offence, as he contested it io police court this morning, was the theft of two bicycles, one from this eity and the other from West Alexandria, O. Oa ArrJ 28, last, Fishtr took the wheel of Henry Goebler, the sign painter, of this city, who signs bis name "Goebler, of course." , The wheel was at Goebler's place of business, near Benning's livery stable, between tenth and eleventh, on the north side of Main street. Goebler's shop is up-stairs there, over tae livery stable. The thett was reported to the police, and by careful and adroit wotk suspicion was fastened where it belonged. A few days ago Fisher returned to this eity, and his arrest followed as quickly as some d ta.ls of the young man's travels and ad ventures could be got at. This mo: ning in police court it was stated by Fi her as he had already stated mor 1 lly in detail to the police fiat Fih r had taken tha Gobbler wheel on toe uay mentioned, and that after having ridden it out of the city to Dayton and to points north of that place, he had left it at West Alexandria for repairs. There he "rented" another wheel, and rode it to a place near the eastern suburbs of this city, where he left it. After walking into the city he was duly nabbed by the officers as above stated. He was found probably guilty ard was bound over to circuit court on a bond of $500. He will get a reformatory sentence, almost without a shadow of a doubt.
