No min b better known and liked in that rich tier of Illinois counties, of which Peoria is the centre, than genial Chester S. Harrington, of Princcville, III. Mr. Harrington is a veteran of the late sjrar. Like many another brave soldier, be suffered not only during that service, but for years afterwards from diseases contracted then. For years bis health was shattered his sufferings increased. He was unable (o Cain rchaL but now be tells a story which of profit to many t "I served three years in the 124th Illinois, enlisting at Kewanee, lit," said he. 1 was in Libby Prison and suffered like many another Northern soldier. "The strain of army life did its work in undermining my health, although the colbpse did not come for sometime after. For fifteen years I suffered from general debility and nervousness so badly that I could not sleep. Indigestion resulted and. Biy misery increased. For two years I was unfitted for busiy I was just able to creep around dur- - fag part of this time, and there were many times when I could not get up. 44 My brother is a doctor, but all his efforts to help me failed to give any relief. . avail. Finally, having read articles regarding cures that had been effected by Dr. W.Uiams' Pink Pills for Pale People, I decided to try them. That was in l I bought a boa and took the pills according to instructions. "Four days later I had the happiest hours I had known for years. That night I went to sleep easily and slept soundly as a child and awoke refreshed. After I had taken four boxes of tfca pills, I found that I was cured and had also increased 27 pounds in weight. " This greatly surprised my friends, who thought my case was a hopeless one. I began my work again and have continued ever since in excellent health. Another valuable gain to me was, that while I was taking these pills I had been cured of the smoking habit, which bad formed when I was a boyand had clung to me all these yean. The craving for tobacco left me and I have never experienced it since. I cannot say enough for these pills and have recommended them to many.' To verify this statement Mr. Harrington made affidavit to its truthfulness before Lincoln M. Coy, Notary Public Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People strike at the root of disease by acting directly upon the in" pure blood. Their

power is marvelous and many wonderful cures have been made. Drupgists consider t'u em a potent remedy, and all sell them. .si1". 51st Street Boulevard, Chicago. Cents a Week.

OUR NEW YORK LETTER.

Tb War Fv In tba Metropolis Ths Opinion of a Speculative Capitalist. Tba Effect on Summer Resort. fSoedal Correspondence. As .nibt be expectHl, this city baa bet-n a . xial for weeks. Ev pry tody talks war, and only eooagh L-reath i xpended on other inbjcts to keep the lieceerary tuacbioery of life and bodine; going. The bankt-r, the b etc her, the baker and the barkeep, the preacher, the prufeesor, the politician and the policeman all mix war opinions, war queries and war prophecies with their ' affairs to such au extent that it i soinet times bard to tell the banker from tbe ; Larkeep or tbe preacher from tbe poj 1 iceman. Under each circumstances correspondents for oat f f town papers find it difllcnlt to get hold of anything io the way of news that isn't iu some way related to the war. "Well, yon see this war business opi-tts ocr calculations to iioeb exteut, t;r "Come around when the war's over aud I'll tell yon something about it," or "When Cuba gets ber independence, there'll be soraetbitig big to tell about thi.," are tome of tbe responses I tave bad lately from mou of affairs when I was iu qut-t-t of news. So I have to fall in with the spirit of tbe times, nuke a virtue of necessity and chronicle things as tbey are to be een aud beard in the nittropoliti that . baa gone war L-iad. As the Capitalist See It. " War is a terrible thing, and tbe burden of expense always bears heavily upon the country that goes iuto it," tays Air. Capital. Then he wiuks tbe other eye and whimpers: "lint no far as this glorious country is concerned it will result in a Kavius in one way. It is estimated that Americans epeDd about $100,000,000 abroad every summer. A very small fraction of this amount will be expended tbi year, for tbe reason that our would be tourists will fear to take the chances of beiug overhauled on tbe high seas by Spanish privateers and will stay at borne aud try and worry through the enmrner st American reYour Doctor Knows Your doctor knows all about fooda and medicines. Tbe next time you see him. 1 just ask him what he thinks Of Scott's Emulsion Of Cod-Liver Oil with Hypophosphites. We are willing' to trust in his answer. For twenty-five years doc tors have prescribed our Emulsion for paleness, weakness, nervous exhaustion, and for all diseases that cause loss in flesh. Its creamy color and its pleasant taste make it especially useful for thin and 1 delicate children. No other preparation of cod- ! liver oil is like it. Don't lose time and risk your health by takingr something unknown and untried. Keep in mind that SCOTT'S EMULSION has stood the test for a quarter of a century. Soc. and $t 00; all drutgiM. would otherwise be spent broad will be saved or spent at home." Mr. Capital thought that there would probably be some interference with exports from this country, extra cost of marine insurance because ships will be subject to tbe right of search, "but," be said, "free Cuba will more than overbalance r.H losses from those and kindred sources. Tbe Cuban republic is going to offer a glorious field for tbe investment of American capital. Tbe large interests we already have in Cuba are badly damaged, but the land remains, and when ceace is restored we shall obtain titles from tbe new authorities, begin extensive improvements and catch right on to what is sure to prove a rich field for investment. Oh, there'll be lota of budness wbeu the cruel war is over, and we may be happy yet, you bet." Choosing- a Place to Summer. Speaking of the check put upon the usual annual exodus to Europe calls to mind tbe conflicting stories that are afloat about the effect of tbe war on the seashore resorts. The proprietors of mountain reports are jubilant over what they are assured is reliable evidence that tbe summer flitters will not Sit to the st-ashore this year. A man who rep resents half a dozen Adirondack hotels was in tbe city tbe other day, and he voiced tbe opinion of interior resort men in these words: "I find that the average nnattached woman who wants to go to a summer hotel prefers going to some place that is not on tbe sea shore, and this feeling is of course beneficial to the Adirondack resorts. One woman who has taken a cottage for several seasons at an inland New Jersey town told me that she bad read of torpedoes traveling 12 miles and doing great damage, and she wasn't going to take any chances while tbe war was on. " On tbe other band, it is reported that there has not been much of a falling off in the number of cottages rented for the summer at Newport and other similar resorts. There doesn't seem to be much fear of the Spanish torpedo at New England or Long Island sound resorts, but there can be little doubt that there will be a considerable falling off at places on tbe New Jersey coast. A traveling man who bad just returned from a trip through the New Jersey coast towns told me the other day that he did absolutely no basiuess. The shopkeepers were very much discouraged and expected most of tbe cottages to be vacant during the summer. Unexampled Wai Prices. In wartimes the people always expect to pay more for things thau in times of pence, anr1 their expectations are usually fulfilled. Therefore it is rather surprising to note at this time the downward tendency of prices in certain lines. Take restaurants, for instance. There bare b'eu for years what were called cheap mating houses on tbe Bowery. Now thu 5 and 10 cent restaurateurs on that brilliaut avenue are threatened with bankruptcy by a rival. He hasn't cut the price of meals, but his big flaring signs announce that one can get a good meal, including a plate of ice iTeem, all for a nickel. The new one, like most Bowery restaurants, gives a poutinuous performanca Rich Spinster Marries a Musician. Society circles iu tbe metropolitan district vere set in a flurry the other day by the announcement of a marriage over iu Newark. It was in the church built by her own father that Elsie t. l'eddie, aged 31, became the bride of Touzo Liwyfo Sauvage, aged 21. Her father, a congressman and a millionaire, was Tjmas B. Peddie, a trunk manufacturer. He founded the Peddie Memorial church in Newark. Mr. Saurage has been tbe organist of the Peddie Memorial for a year or more. It is said Miss Peddie discarded a leader of Newark society to marry her handsome youug musician. Joskph Russell. How irenxug is JlRnted. Peking is advancing. So at least one gathers from tbe Peking and Tien tsin Times, which announces that a couple of gas lamps and three petroleum lamps now illuminate tha capital of the Celes tial Kingdom. This unwonted departure, however, is not due to native enter prise. Tbe gaslights are set up in front of the Russian embassy, while the three lesser luminaries shine for the benefit of the customers of the Russo-Cbinese bank. Throughout the rest of the city wayfarers still have to follow their noses as soon as darkness sets in. A Pretty Custom. When a vessel is launched by Japa uese, tbey do not "christen' it as we do, but instead they hang over the ship's prow a large pasteboard cage full of birds. Directly the ship is afloat a man pulls a string, the cage opens, and the birds fly off, making the air alive with thfir songs and tbe whir of their wings. The idea is that tbe birds wel come tbe vesst-l as she begins ber career as a thing of life. A Secret. She Julie and Joe are engaged, but they have decided to keep tbeir engagement a secret.
