BATTLE OF CARDENAS.
Graphic Desorlo'lo of the Unequal
Contest Betwten the Three American Vsssels and the Spanish Gunboats and Land Batteries In Cardinas Harbor. Our telegraphic report from Key Weit yesterday gave a corrf ct account
of the bloody naval fight in Cardenas
harbor. The following is a more detaJed account of the unfortunate engagement: V
Tbe engagement took place inside the harbor of Cardenas. Tbe gunboat
Wilmington, the torpedo boat Wins-
tow and the gunboat Hudson were the mly vessels engaged. They entered the harbor for the purpose of attacking some Spanish gunboats which were known to be there. These latter,
however, were not discovered by the American force nntil the Spaniards peened fire. The land batteries of
Carienas supported the fire of the
Spanish gunboats.
ine engagement began at Z:Vo p.
m. and lasted tor about an hour.
The battle, while it lasted, was ter
rific. 1 he Wilmington and the Hud
ion were ahead, and opened fire on the Spanish boats, which were lying at the
dock. 1 he firing began at the range
of 3,500 yards.
A few minutes later the Winslow came up and also opened fire. In an
instant the firing of the Spanish gun
boats and land guns was directed tgainst her. From allsides shot and
shell seemed to pour in upjn tbe little
"orpedo boat.
The W dmington and Hudson still
kept np their fire, but they could not
turn aside the U rrible storm of fire and Jeath pouring in upon the torpedo
boat.
The crew of the Winslow, however,
never faltered for a second. At 2:30
p. m. a solid shot crashed into tbe
V inelow and knocked out her boiler.
In an instant she began to roll and
urn i neipiessiy. men mere was a moment of awful suspense. A fierce
cheer of triumph went np from the Spaniards on the gunboats and in the batteries, and again a storm of fire
was opened upon the helpless boat
The gunboat Hudson, which was lying
near by, start d to the assistance of
the Winslow. She ran along side the
torpedo boat and tried to throw a line
to the imperi ed crew.
vp to tnis tiue, with the exception
ol the one s ;et which disabled the boiler of the Wnslow, the firing of the
?pani;cli gunboats had been wild, but
as the Wins-Iow lay rolling in the water
'he range crew closer, and shells began to explode all about her. It was difiicu't for tbe Hudson to get jeer enough to throw a line to Winslow's crew, so terrible was the fire tbout her. Finally, after about twenty minute?, he IiuJson approached near enough
to throw a line.
Ensign Bat' ley and six men were
standing in a group on the deck of the
VV inflow.
'Heave her, heave her. heave her! "
shouted Bagley. as he looked toward
Le commander of the Hudson and
called for a line.
Don't miss it," shouted an officer
from the Hudson, and. with a smile.
Bagley caAkad bak. " Let has . nrr.
It a irettin? too hot here from com
fort." -
The line was thrown, and at the
same instant a shell burst in the very
midst of the group of men on board
the Winslow.
Bagley was inst&nilvktflednd a
few others dropped about him. Halt
dozen more fell groaning to the
blood-stained deck. One of the dead
men pitched headlong over the side of
the boat, but his feet caught in the
iron rail, ani he wa hauled back.
Bagley lay stretched on the deck,
with his face completely torn away,
and the upper part of his body shattered.
It was a terrible moment on the
torpeto boat, disabled and helpless, aud swayed under the fury of the fire
from the Spanish gunboats. When
the shell burst in the group on board
Wiuslow, another wild shout of tri
umph went up from tbe Sganish boats
and batteries, and again a heavy fire
was opened on the torpedo boat.
Finallj the L u lson succeeded in get
ting a line on beard the Winslow, and
was towing her out of the deadly range
when the line parted, and again both
boats were at the mercy of the Spanish
fire.
At 3:50 p. m. the Hudson managed
to get another line in the deck of the
Winslow. but there were only three
men left at that time to make it fast.
The line was finally secured, and
the Winslow was towed to Pedras
island, where she was anchored, with
her dead and wounded on her decks.
There some men from the Hudson went on board the Winslow and took
