Sampson's report to Secretary Long says a portion of his squadron began an attack yesterday at dajbreak on the batteries defending San Juan. The attack continued three hours, and resulted in much damage to the bat

teries and incidentally to a portion of the city adjacent. The batteries re plied without material effect. One man was killed on the New York and

seven were slightly wounded in the squadron. No serious damage was done to the ships. Havana, Cuba, May 13. Blanco's report of the bombardment of San Juan says the damage was considerable and the loss insignificant.

nine war ships arrived before Juan just before sunrise. At signal, the battleship Iowa

the first shot, wLich took effect.

Then the battleship Indiana opened fire; in a few minutes Morro fort was

reduced to a heap of ruins. The forf made little effort to respond and was silenced almost immediately. The Spanish Bteamer Rita was captured by the United States auxiliary cruiser Yale, which took her crew on

board. Thousands of, the population and the foreign consuls sought refuge in the interior of the islands.
