to tarn the tables on any one who j tackled him along this line. We knew 1 that he was not specially scrupulous. . bat despite bis shortcomings he was a favorite. One fall be secured tbe nom- j (nation for prosecntiug attorney, and i pitted against him was tbe only other ' lawyer in our village, a conscientious man, without any sense of humor and always in deadly earnest. " Of coarse they had joint meetings, for westerners ; insist upon these political tournaments, j "At one of these Jim's opponent was 1 nagged into anger and wound up bis speech by saying that be might not be as brilliant as the opposing candidate, ' bi t he was honest with his clients and ' had never taken a fee on both sides cf a tiate as Mr. Powerly bad done. "it was expected that a charge so grave would call down a storm of deliaut abnse, but Jim came up smiling anil told a fanny story just to relieve tbe tension of tht crowd. Then he said: 'Fellow eitizf-ns, I agree in condemning this practice of taking a fee from both

parties to a lawsuit. Something should be done. I have often wished that I was not the only lawyer iu oar town, bat as long as I am no man shall apply for my legal assistance in vain.' Here tbe other candidate snooted that be was
