A Mother's Misery.
The story of this woman is the every day history of thousands who are suffering as she did; who can be cured as she was; who will thank her for showing them the way to good health.
Us most rcmar kablc thing about Mrs. Nlli J. Lord, of Strafford Corner, N. rL, ii that the is alive to-day. No one, perhaps it more surprised at this than Mrs. Lord herself. She looks back at the day when she stood on the verge of death and shudders. She looks ahead at a life of happiness with her children, her husband and her home with a joy that only a mother can realize. Mrs. Lord is the mother of three children, two of whom arc twins ; until the twins came nothing marred the joy of her life. Then she was attacked with heart failure and foe a year was unable to attend to the ordinary duties of the home. In describing her own experience Mrs. Lord says: ' MI had heart failure so bad I was often thought to be dead. "With this 1 had neuralgia of the stomach so bad it was necessary to give me morphine to deaden the pain. "Sometimes the doctors gave me temporary relief, but in the end it seemed as if way suffering was multiplied. "Medicine did me no good and was but an aggravation. "f was so thin my nearest friends failed to recognize me. " No one thought I would live. Ml was in despair and thought that my I (B CtS

I Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People have cured many cases of almost similar nature. The vital elements in Mrs. Lord's blood were deficient. The haemoglobin was exhausted. She was unfit for the strain she was compelled to undergo. Her nervous system was shattered and her vitality dropped below the danger point. A collapse was inevitable. THE RAZOR TRADER. Better Bul Far thw Ei-ttarhrr Ikaa Working "First Chair." A barber who for many years was connoted with one of the big up town establishments baa lately quit the place where be worked so long at tbe "first chair" and has gone into a little business venture of bis own that is paying him better than bis trade ever did. The scheme h is now operating is an original one. and if business continues to increase doubtless others will follow bis ex ample. The ex-barber not only car ries on bis trade in this city, but on certain days in the week invades Brooklyn and Jersey City. He car ries his etocK, whicn consists 01 dozen 01 o razors and several hones. Some of tho razors are new, but many of them are old ones which be has "touehed up," and these are al ways preferred hy a knowing barber. He enters a shop and starts a conversation on razors. This results in each barber producing his "pet" as well as those that he is getting tired of and which he is always willing to sell or trade. This is the ex-barber's opportunity, and be pro duces bis stock. Then he makes a dicker, and generally before he leaves he trades one of bis razors for tbe one the barber is dissatisfied with, but tbe barber always has to pay something. Tbe usual price in the transaction is from 25 to 50 oents. It often happens, too, that tbe barber will take a fancy to one of the new razors, and in such cases he exchanges, but of course pays more than if it were just a swap. Thus this man travels from place to place, and sometimes a razor given in exchange down town ana pronounced by its former owner as no good will be exchanged for another up town, sorce barber becoming im pressed while handling it with its ring and good looks. All barbers have an idea that a razor when used too often becomes what they call "tired," and they be-" lieve that bones, straps or anything else cannot bring it around all right. These "tired" razors are the ones on which the ex-barber clears his big gest profits, and be gets them for almost a song. He fixes them up at borne nights, and these form the bulk of his stock the next day "Tired" razors are peculiar things, be says, but if you know how to handle them they only need a night's rest. This man docs not confine himself alone to razors, but carries other barber's tools about with him. He will sell or swap anything, but there must always bo a small money con sideration. Frequently a razor swap ped by him finds its way into his hands again, and in many cases be has swapped it back to its original owner. Of course tue oiu owner recognies it and hesitates to make an exchange, but be ia feure of his own skill in fixing the razor up and leaves it on trial. He says they sel dom fail to prove all right, and on his next trip to that shop the barber givea another razor and pays the difference. Nejw Yotk Sun...r Marriage Chances. Between 15 and 19 only one girl out of 73 marries. Marriages used to be much earlier, and Miss Austen's delightful Marion Dashwood maintained that after 24 a woman could no longer expect to be loved for herself. In the old novels 18 was about the extreme .'imit of age for a heroine. Between 29 and 24 one girl out of 13 marries, bat the most marrying age for spinsters (one in eignt) is between 25 and 29. After 25 young ladies were called "thorn backs" by the much marrying Puritans of New England, who preferred widows. Widows throughout life have a greater chance of remarrying than girls have of marrying. The elder Mr. Weller has prophesied in vain. A little widow is a dangerous thing," probably because it is easier to glide into confidences with a lady who has known affliction. Widows from 21 to 34 are especially noted for what, from the point of view of girls, is mere poaching. A widower remarries more than bachelors marry. A widower from 23 to 34 belongs to the most marrying group in existence, except perhaps tutors of colleges.- v Lev that Alters. Lore is not lore that alters when it attention: finds." That is one of the sublimest lines in all literature. It is the final definition of lore by the world's greatest reader of the human mind, Shakespeare. Nearly all women who truly love, love in this sublime way. Men seldom do. Woman's most glorious endowment is the power to awaken and hold the pure and honest love of a worthy man. When she loses it and still loves on, oo one in the wide world can know the heart agony he endures. The woman who suffers from weakness and derangement of bet special womanly organism soon loses the power to sway the heart of a man. Hex g-eneral health suffers and she loses her rood looks, her attractiveness, her amiability and her power and prestige as a woman. Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo. N.Y4 with the assistance of his staff of able physicians, has prescribed for many thousands of women. He has devised a perfect and scientific remedy for women's ailments. It is known as Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. It is a positive specific for all weakBesses, diseases, disorders, displacements, irregularities, and debilitating drains peculiar to women. It purifies, regulates, strengthens and heals. Medicine dealers ell it, and 00 honest dealer will advise you to accept a substitute that he nay make a little larger profit. They Art Increasing, Not Disappearing, and Thwjr Are Not Always Wanderers. It has been popularly supposed that the gypsies of Europe, like the Indians of North America, were becoming au extinct race, and the conditions of their existence are not such as 4aould seem tc Fsnte longevity. But a recently published official report of the English government shows that tbe number of gypsies in England, so far from declining, ts actually on the increase, and the same is true of some other European countries from which figures are at band. By an authentic computation ni:le recently there are 85,000 gypsies in Great Britain, 7,000 more than at the time of the last previous enumeration though perhaps that may have been somewhat imperfect. There are in the whole of Europe nearly three-quarters of a million of gypsies, the figures bemg Great Britain, 33,000; Spam, 40, 000; Russia, 25,000; Germany, 45,000. and Austria, Turkey and tbe Balkan countries, 800,000 each. Gypsies, who are kuown as Zingari in Italy. Gitanos in Spain, Ziguener in Germany, Czigan yok in Hungary, Tzigani in Slavic countries, Tcbingancb in Turkey, and Bohemian in France, are considered to be of Asiatic origin, though tbe nanid "gypsies" is generally acknowledged to be a corruption cf the word Egyptian and in Scotland a gypsy is called an Egyptian!, as readers of the "Little Minister'-' are aware. In the United States there are few gypsies, for the reason perhaps that they meet with great competition in tho pursuits which in Eurvpean countries fcrnish them with tbir chief revenue fortune telling, divination and soothsaying. In Europe, though it is popularly supposef that they are mere wanderers, tbe pariahs of civilization, driven from place tol place as popular sentiments or teseutiuyt inay dictate, the fact is that iBayXi' ( am " "tM Te perm a nan Uy IoctAu 3TIVwVof ttieir qVwm, msiitaininofstable administration and prospering jto a considerable extent. This is especially true in tbe districts on or near ttye lower Danube, and tbe gypsy population of Transylvania, in Hungary, is not only large, bat also quite influential. Hungarian gypsies have long been kuown everywhere ou account of their appreciation of music and gypsy bauds have viaited tbe United States from time to time and with usually good succt ss. The aptitude of gyp sies iu acquiring knowledge of music has always been marked, and Franz Liszt has borne testimony to this quality by saying: "ludiifereut to the minute and com plicated passions by which educated mankind is swayed, callous to tbe canting, gasping effects of such microscopies and supercultcred vices as vanity, ambition, intrigue and avarice, tbe gypsy only comprehends the simplest requirements of a primitive nature. Music, dancing, drinking and love, diversified by a childish and humorous delight in petty thieving aud cheating, coastitute his whole repertory of passions, beyond whose limited horizon he does not care to look." The gypsies of England are foui.d chiefly in the nortbtrn counties. New York Sun. Lilieokalani's Dignity. Over at the Ebbitt House, iu Washington, is tbe deposed Queen Llliuofcalani aud ber suit. There is a pitiful attempt at keeping up royal state with a thin pocket book. Queen Lil no longer has any state revenues to fall back upon, but she cannot bring herself to live after tbe manner of plain Mrs. Domlnis She has the suit occupied by President McKinley at tbe time of his inauguration, and most of the time she spends In ber apartments in solitary splendor. At time she comes to dinner in tle public dining room and sits at the bead af one of tbe long tables, surrounded by her dusky court. On these occasions thu members of her retinue rise solemnly as she enters tbe door and remain standing until sbe has taken ber seat. -When she Las dined, tLey rise again and keep their feet cntU ber flowing silk skirts disappear tbrongh tbe door. Once in awhile she lingers in the parlor after dinner, and then tbe guests cf the hotel have a chance at royalty in full view. The lady in waiting stands submissively back cf ber mistress' chair and never addresses the queen unless sbe is first spoken to. Usually the evening passes without a word on either side, and then the rf-tmue takes its way to the royal apartments. Tbe queen has been at the Ebbitt ever since congress convened, but so seldom has she left the hotel that comparatively few people know she is in the city. Boston Journal.
