A strange accident recently occurred

the New York. New Haven and Hart

ford railroad. Through the neglect of a telegraph operator, say Locomotive Engineering, an engine with a snow-plow passed the station where a stop order

had been received and met a milk train on the road. The engine of the milk

train was scooped up cn the boiler cf

the enowplow engine and remained in the position shown until taken to an engine boose. An unusual thing about

tbe accidtnt was tiiat nobody was even

bort. There bad been five men in the

snowplow, but they jumped out before

the collision and escaped without injn ry. The fireman of the milk train en

gine was knocked from the cab into the enow, aud be escaped wifb a few slight bruises. The engineer of the top engine

and the engineer of tbe bottom engine

both remained at their poets, and nei

tner was l una red.

from the attraction and repulsion of fric

tional electricity the same kind that

is produced by the chafing of tbe silk

flaps against the rotating glass disk in the eo called "electrical machine." An

experiment with tbe same kind of elec

tncity, which can easily be tried, is to

apply gentle friction to a thin piece of

clotb or paper, when ou bringing it near the wall of the apartment it will

be attracted thereby and adhere to the

The Popular !?cieuce News says that

an interesting discovery, from a geological point of view, was recently made

by an explorer in the mountains of Witzies Hoek, Natal, says Le Genie

Civil. On the summit of an extinct vol cano, on the edge of a laka that occu

pies me crater, soundings revealed a

layer of sand inclosing small diamonds.

It would be interesting to know wheth

er these diamonds were there acciden

tally that is, as tbe result of washing

operations carried on by the natives or

whether this discovery corresponds to an actual mine of diamonds, for tbe

hills of Witzies Hoek are not situated

in regions known to be diamond bear

ing. On this last hypothesis the preS'

ence of precious stones iu the crater of

a volcano would doubtless throw some

light on tbe formation of the gems in

nature.

Rychnowski, tbe electrician of Lem-

berg, claims to have discovered an elec

tric fluid, which be calls "electroid." The discovery has caused a great sensation on the continent. He obtains it by

electrolysis, but it is not identical with electricity. Its effects are declared to be startling, producing light and causing

Geissler tubes to emit fluorescent rays. It works pbotochemically, rotates ob

jects in midair, produces whirlpools in water aud kills bacteria. Metal and

glass thereby can be charged with electricity, and the magnetic needle changes

direction under its influence.

tbe way of photographic surveying has

been accomplished on any such scale

anywhere else in tbe world.

The causes of failure on the part of

many who have tried tbe niepod and discarded it in diegust are chiefly two.

One of these is a defective knowledge

in descriptive geometry and perspective,

which are essentials of tbe plotting photographic surveying. The other difficulty lies in the manipulation of tbe photographic apparatus itself and the making of a proper negative. Tbii is by no

means tbe easy tbmg ft seems, since photographs that would be highly acceptable to tbe average photographer, professional or amateur, might be quite useless for tbe purpose of the surveyor. For example, the surveyor's picture, in

order to be of use, must be taken with tbe oamera in precisely the horizontal

position, tilting never a hairbreadth in one direction or another. The leus he

uses must be an anastigmat and absolutely rectilinear, that tbe image may not be in tbe least distorted, and the plate must be of a special kind and ad

justed in the camera with a degree of nicety of which tbe ordinary photographer has no conception.

Mr. Devi lie, wbo had in charge the

Canadian work, points out ia a practical way bow many of tbe worst difficulties may be easily overcome. Thus the simple device of having a net suspend

Engineer I War. One has only to look back a few hun

dred years iu history and note the abso

lute transformation wrought in wanare as soon as the introduction of gunpowder and fire artillery became an accomplished fact. Tbe trained knight, bred

to arms and honestly believing tnat in

him lav all the science of warfare that

could ever be possible, was suddenly

transformed into a ridiculous Don Quix

ote, helpless before the rude band ol

peasants wbo, with tbeir "villainous saltpeter," made all his knowledge of the art of war obsolete. Today we are

undoubtedly on tbe verge of a similar

transformation, and should the misl ;r-

tune ot war become a aire uecessi '. j

there is every reason to believe tlit the ineennity of American engineers, cou-

fitmftors and inventors would evolve

devices of destruction before which the

existina battleships and fortifications

would soon be relegated to obscurity.

Two instances of most recent occurrence

have demonstrated tbe weakness ot modern warships, one tbe ease with

which the single blow of a ram sent the

Victoria to the bottom of the Mediter

ranean, the other the havoc which a single explosion wrought upon the Maine iu Havana harbor. Tbe modern warship ia fatally like tbe armored knight of mediaeval times, vulnerable because of exceeding bulk and clumsiness, a fair mark for the skill of the engineer who can combine force and motion and substitute rapidity for size and secrecy for strength. Engineer. To Mr tali ze Wood. The process for metalizing wood is

thus described in Moudes: Tbe wtwft-ia first immersed for three or four days, according to its permeability, in a canstic alkaline lye at a temperature of from 75 to 50 degrees. From thence it

passes immediately into a bath of hydrosulphite cf calcium, to which is added, after 24 or 26 hours, a concentrated solu

tion of snlnhtir in caustic potash. The

duration cf this bath is about 48 hours.

aud its temperature ia from 55 to 50

desreea. Finally tbe wood is immersed

from 30 to 40 hours in a hot solution of

acetate of lead. The process, as may be

seen, is a lona one. but tbe results are

surprising. Tbe wood thus prepared,

after having undergone a proper drying

at a moderate temperature, acquires un

der a burnisher of bard wood a polished

surface and assumes a very brilliant

motallie luster. This luster is still

further increased if the surface of the

wnnrl is first rubbed with a piece of

lead, tin or zinc and is afterward pot

isbed with a glass or porcelain burnish

er. The wood thus assumes tbe appear

nn nf a true metallic mirror and 1

very solid and resistant.
