INVASION OF SPAIN. CASTILIANS I EAR ATTACK IN THEIR HOM POSSESSIONS. fiof ntinna taOMrrl tha CcMuta auad Ad jacent lalawaO Hmoat Why Wmr May , Hit, to Ba Cttaviocl lata Karop Dim- , calty of TranfJrting Troop to Spain. From tb elaborate preparations j which Spais 1 making to defend the coasts of tb4; sninsula, as well as the Balearic isl da, it would appear that ; be has infofl ation to the effect that , ber war witbr the United States ill not be conflneU to this side of the At-: Iantic, bnt tbat""Tt will eventually extend to the old world. In fact, there is every reason t believe that the Spauiards anticipate a possibility of au American descent upon tbeir coasts and an invasion of their kingdom. Dispatches recently received from Washington tend to confirm this belief, for, after losing Cuba and Puerto Rico, and possibly the Philippines, if the Spaniards refuse to come to terms and persint in declining to accept peace, it will be necessary lor tne unitea states to cross ( the ocean in order to bring the struggle i to a conclusion. - Some such step as this would naturally appear preferable to permitting the conflict to drag on for years, necessitating the maintenance of both the army and the navy on a war footing, with American maritime commerce and trade in constant danger of attack by Spanish warships or privateers. For the United States to invade Spain with the object of bringing the war to a conclusion would prove an even still more arduous task than for Spain to either defend Cuba or to make any descent on the American coast. Whereas Spain has in the island of Cuba and iu Puerto Rico bases of supplies for any attack on the United States, the United States has nothing of the kind on tbe European side of the Atlantic, aud would, of course, have to begin by capturing the Canaries for the purpose, using them fur reooaling, reprovisioniug and refitting the fleet before actually at temptine to effect a landing of Ameri can troops on Spaaisb shores. Without expiating here on the enor mous difficulties "which an American army would bayejp face in Spain itself, where every peasant is more or less ac customed to guerrilla warfare, it may safely be taken for granted that a step of this kind on the part of the (jnited States would lead to a serious imbroglio between the latter and some of the con tinental powers of Europe. It ia well known that both France aud Austria would have brought about au armed intervention in behalf of Spain iu American waters had they 'been able to get Germany, Italy, r lssia or England to joiu them. ' BotjL'Se propoaasl wa not only enrtly rejecvoa by England, br likewise frowned 04011 by Russia, while Germany aud Italy, after hesitating for a time, cold shouldered the proposal. Should, however, the war extend to Europe and American troops invade Spain itself it is extremely probable that France, either with or without the co-operation of the xtber continental powers, would support her neighbor in repelling American invasion of Enrope Only ' England and possibly Russia would be likely jjexpress tbeir disap proval of France taking part in the fray. Continental Europe, in fact, is a strongly, opposed to the United States becoming a factor in old world politics as is this country averse to European powers becoming factors not merely iu American politics, but any where iu the western hemisphere, and it- is possible that even other countries besides Frauor perbape Austria and Germany, might be disposed to assist Spain iu ber etion to preyeut Uucle Sam from obtaining a foothold in the old world. I see from 'Vashiugton dispatches thai the naval officers there regard the pm chase of so large a number of ruercliauvessels and ocean liners by the govern ruent as an indication that they atdestiued for the conveyance of Auieri can troops to Spain. If the Unite' States authorities have any such iuteu tion, they willjiiave to acquire a fagreater number of vessels than they have got now. When iu lSb'3 Euglauti seut a small army of 20. CHU men t Egypt, she was compelled to employ many merchant steamers and liut-rs f,i the purpose as to temporarily throv oat of gear all the ordiuary bteutuiii.' services In fatt, it will tax to tbe utmost the shipping resources now at the disposal cf the government to convey an army of 20,000 or 30,000 men to Cuba, which is only a few hours distant from the American coast. " Itviould be ridiculous to attempt buy invasion of Spain without at least r forte of 100; 000 men, and these, with tbeir supplies, tbtir artillery, theii horses and' mulrf aud all tbe impedi uienta of a great army, would necessitate the use of several hundred large transports aud liners for tbeir conveyance acror-s the Atlantic, alwavs bearing ia uind that tbe lauding on the meniy's coast must be made iu force aud not iu driblets if it is to prove successful. That tbe Spaniards are. firmly convinced of tbe likelihood of an American invasion of tbeir possessions ia Europe is, as I have stated above, evident from the treasure and troops which they are devoting to the defense of tbe coast aud of the- Balearic and Canary islands I That a similar belief exists in naval aud j military circles at Washington is shown by recent dispatches from tbe national capital. Should these anticipations be realized for the sake of bringing the present war to a close there is no know ing to what an American invasion of Un rope of this kind may lead. housewives for twenty-five LENGTH OF THE WAR. Juda-e Thotnaa .MacLry Thinks It Wilt Extend Over Threw or four rm. Hon. TLouias J. Mackey of Sonth Carolina, who was a captain of engineers iu the Confederate army and did splendid rrvic iu the construction of the fortifications at Ricbnioud and other points, was seen in Washington recently. In 1886 he made a thorough examination of .Morro Castle, and the plans thereof, drawn by him, are in the war department. Judge Mackey will no doubt go to Cuba in a very short time as an engineer iu the United States army. Iu a conversation with a Washington Pott reporter the judge took a vtry different view of the probable length of the conflict from that generally enterttiiued. "1 think," said he, "that our war with Spain will extend over a period of three or four years aud possibly much longer. To achieve final victory we will be forced to laud an army on Spanish soil, and that will bring on the greatest battle in the auuals of history. A quarter of a million of men will be engaged ou either eidn. The takiug of Cu ba and Puerto Rico, iu stead of marking ternlini, tioll of the struggle, will ou . its iuprt, ilin aaA the euemv is wise euough to have discounted tbe loss of this territory. Spain has a population of 19,000,000 and is a warlike race. Unless we administer a crushing blow ou their osvu soil they will not stop nghtiug for the next 30 years." DEVOTION OF A MOTHER. Many Watched Her aa She Marched Beside Her Soldier Son. A fight for Spartan eyes was witnessed recently in Chicago when the first detachment of naval recruits from Chicago aud Milwaukee marched dowu the biurxith asphalt of Jackson boulevard to the Pennsylvania depot, en route for New York, to enter active service. Notwithstanding that the escort of 500 'bluejackets of the Illinois naval reserve were showing a faultless drill, everybody watched one figure, iu black. Kight among tbe niarchiug recruits and keepiug close alongside of a st rappi ug young fellow in a light overcoat, who was carrying a small traveling grip, was a woman of fully 0 years. She was dressed iu mourning, and many a hurrah was bushed as people caught tbe first glimpse apparently of a widowed, gray haired mother personally taking ber sou iuto tbe rank and file of the boys in blue. She kept an arm around him aud her head bowed, noticing no one else. Perhaps 20 other women aud girls mothers, wives and sweethearts walued with the recruits, but the attention of the spectators followed only tbe lone woman in black till she was lost iu tbe distance. Cincinnati Euqnirer. - ARMY NURSES IN ENGLAND. They t'oderg-o a Severe Training and Are a fart of the British Army. "England does not agree with the United States that men are better nurses thau women, said a member of one of tbe relief corps to a New York Tribune reporter recently. "A body of trained nurses would indeed be a valuable aid to th medical and surgical departments of our army aud navy. Iu Euglaud tbe government established a training school where women were to be educated for the army nearly 20 years ago. Tbe quetn fouuded Netley hospital after Florence Nightingale's work iu tbe Crimea. "Nnrscs have to spend five or six years in training, which is exceedingly severe, and when they are graduated they wear a uniform and are a part of tbe British army. They must respond at a moment's notice, aud with little baggage, to go to any part of the world where they nre needed. They take the sufferers home from plague stricken lands and from battlefields and perform all tbe arduocs duties of an army nurse's life. I wish we had fucb a corps iu tbe Ciiifed fr'tates. Some day the government vill wake up to the need of it." OPENED BY A BUGLE CALL Fervid I mount ration of Loyalty at ait Inttianapolia Church Service. The services at tbe First Baptist church iu Indianapolis the other night were opened by a bugle call. Rev. Thomas J. Villers preached a sermon on "Cuba and the American Flax." The walls ud ceiling of the church were draped with tbe union jack and the American and Cuban Sags. Tbe cburcb was packed with people and oOO were unable to enter. Tbe preacher's every sentence was infused with the spirit cf patriotism and at tbe climax tbe congregation cheered wildly. At the words, "When the American flag and anion jack are joined the combination can never be beaten," tbe congregation rose to its feet and tl e building shook with cheers and hand clapping. Old gray beaded churchmen started tbe singing of "America," and tbey were joined by tbe great congregation. The services closed with the playing of sonsa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."
