John E. Baldwin, the aeronaut, whose home is at Dal ton, has nearly
completed an immen-e balloon for ser
vice in the war department. Henry U- Johnson has obtained for him a
position as expert balloonist for the government, a place that was created
for him, and he will act ia connection
with the signal corps. General A. W,
Greely, chief of the sigasl service, has
invited Baldwin to j in the signal
eopps, and he will report to lieneral
Greeley.
The airship which Baldwin has about completed and in which he will
probabiy be required by the war de
partment to take observations of the
movements of the Spanish soldiers and ships, is not large, but because of the
excellence of the machinery used in
its construction it will be capable of
standing a great pressure of ga and
will consequently have great lifting
power. The reservoir is not simply an inflated bag, but has a frame composed of aluminum tubing, which gives it great strength and igidity. Ovt r this frame is stretched and secured the
finest quality of balloon silk, which
will receive many coats of varnish to
prevent the escape of gas.
I he reservoir aione in the ship now beisff oorrtietel is 60 feet long and
26 feet in diameter, with a capacity of
5,000 cubic feet of gas. Hydrogen gas only will be ned to inflate t bitballoon. No hot air will be used. Hot
air loses its buoyancy in about forty
minutes, while dydrogen gas will sus-
ta;n a balloon theoretically forever, or
until it escapes from the reservoir.
un the rrame or the reservoir, one on each side and running longitudinally with it, are two shafts, also of aluminum. On each of these shafts are three propellers. These propellers
are of sheet aluminum, in sections.

8 feet long and 6 feet broad, and have 43 feet of sniface each, the six having
a total of 283 square feet of surface.
The steering mechanism will be
operated by band only, this method
being regarded as the safest. The
motive power for the propellers will
be furnished by a gasoline engine.
small and strong. This motor i
be placed in a secure case or box of aluminum, inside the reservoir at the bottom. By this means all danger of
tire reaching the gas in the reservoir
will be obviated.
The total weight of Baldwin's ship
including motor and all equipmeut, is
l.oOO pounds. Fifteen hundred feet
of aluminum tubing are used in its
construction. It safely carries 2,000
pounds, and two persons can carry provisions for six months to drop among the Spaniards. the car is of aluminum and is so constructed as to
afford safety and shelter from rain and
cold. It has a sleeping apirttneut m which a large man can stretch out.
