DOUBLE DEALING

U the Cause of Many Heart Burning A Riohmond Case That Has the Opposite. Doable dealing, like so many other expressions in the Anglo Saxon language, has different meanings. The above beading does not refer to the deceitful specimens of manhood who curry favor for their own ends and keep a community in a ferment by retailing scraps of confidence. This time 'tis the doable dealing of the Little Conqueror, or Doan's Kidney Pills to be more correct the double dealing. One member of the family tests them.like disease the infection spreads, another tries them, m acquaintance or a friend maybe. Result the same. Care. Read the statement made by Mrs. F. Kidney secretions were unnatural and irregular, and I could I not rest well at night, but always felt more tired and used up in the morning than I did the night before. I saw Doan's Kidnc y Pills recommended and got a box at A. G. Luken & Co's. drug store and started to use them. They soon fixed me up, and I am now better in every way than for a long time be fore. CURRENT MISCELLANY. When the Illinois Central Railroad company substitutes electricity for steam traction io its suburban service at Chicago, it will make use of the fcrce of gravity in stopping and starting its trains. This is a feature devised by the engineers for tbe underground railroad in London, but it is believed to be novel in tbe United States. The plan is to elevate the track at all stations, the gTade to be about 3 per cent, which is not a sufficient variation from the level to be apparent to tbe passengers, bat is estimated to be enough to effect a saving of 33 per cent in power. As is generally known, the most serious of traction problems is the inertia of the train. To start tbe motor and its train takes more than doable tbe torce rermirl to keen tbe tram in motion on ordinary grades or ou the level ground. For this reason motors mart be much stronger tban would otherwise be nec- i essary. By thus grading the tracks tbe I railroad company will utilize, to overcome this obstacle, convenient force which now largely goes to waste gravityTbe train, standing before the station with brakes eet, will be on tbe summit of a 3 per cent grade. When the conductor gives tbe sigcal to start, the man at the lever will take off the brakes, and immediately the force of gravity will set the train moving down tbe grada Tbe start will be more prompt than if enormous power were expended in overcoming tbe inertia of the mass, and the speed of tbe traiu will be accelerated with a comparatively small expenditure of force. At the bottom of tbe grad tbe train will speed along a level track until it approaches another station. Here it will meet a rie of 3 per cent. The motormaa will throw off the current, and the force of gravity will pull the train back as it runs up tbe grade, causing it, without tbe least jar, gradually to lose its speed until as it tops tbe rise and finds itself on tbe down grade the motornian will put on the brakes and stop it in front of the station. Manufacturer. Captain Crowmn shield. "The man," says tbe Boston Transcript, "who next to the secretary of the uavy is an important factor in the department is Captain Arent Schuyler Crowuinshield, chief of the bureau of navigation. Hit duties relate to the personnel of tbe navy, both commissioned and enlisted. He is in control of the general administration of the navy. and at this time bis position is one of tbe highest importance. The captain is a native of New York state and is a grandson of Jacob Crowuinshield, who was secretary of the navy under President Jefferson and who was a brother of another secretary of the navy, Ben jamin Crowuinshield. A greatuncle of Captain Crowuinshield George owned the Cleopatra's Barge, the first yacbt to cross the Atlantic. Her owner and captain bad formed a plan to rescue Napoleon from bis exile at St, Helena, but he was diverted from his purpose by some of tbe near relatives of tbe de posed emperor, who thought it best, far political reasous, that tbe attempt should utft be made at that time. Priucs-Mcrat and others oft berfaaiily went on bourn toe yucnt at iivir. Vecchia and presented Captain George with liiiDtlsmco gifts, which are held as heirlooms in tbe family. It wad this same i;aptaiu ueorge jrowmnenieia who volunteered to go to Halifax after the body of Commodore Lawrence and brought his body to Boston." Smr.Il Borf Rifle. In the course of a letter to The Temps, M. Buffet, a French artist who has just returned from Abyssinia, where be has painted portraits of the emperor and Ras Makonnen, which are to be exhibited at the forthcoming salon, says: "It was in a great degree to tbe small bore guns with which the Italian troops were armed that the Abyssiniuns owed their victories. Ras Makonneu ami several of the suit of Menelek told me that when a bullet had gone right through them their men lost none of their dah. If the bullet did not kill at once and nine out of ten times that was not the case they did not even know they were wounded and fought as furiously as their comrades. Their wounds bealed in a very short time unless a vital organ had been touched. The result is that tbe Abyssiniaus despise such modern arms." In view of possible debates as to the dumdum bullet this testimony is not without its importance. London Post A Drunkard's Death From Thirst. At Levallois-Parret, near Paris, there lived until quite recently a man who was a confirmed dipsomaniac, so much 60 that be bad several times been put under restraint by bis relatives. The last time be came out be seems to have been greatly impressed by represeuta tions which were made to him as to the evils of drinking. From that moment by a perverse Fort of interpretation of tbe good advice be had received be determined to drink nothing at all, not even water. At the end of ten days. during which he had not a drop of drink of any sort, he was found dead in his room. This man, who had con sumed so much liquid in his time, died literallv of thirst. In epaking of Giotto Mr. Ward siiys: This great i.nd well beloved artist, who was at taice painter, ixet, sculptor and architect, was popularly supposed to have been a shepherd. Tradition tells us that as lit daily tended his flock in the pasture one little lamb was ever by his side, showing him the most touching affection. When at last the little lamb was about to die, it epoke in verse to the fchepheid, telling him that its spirit would remain with him always in the form of a fairy and that through its favor he was to become great artist. At all events, the prophecy came true, for Giotto became an artist of worldwide fame, and he built a tower in Florence known as Giotto's Campanile. It is said that here the faiy has dwelt ever since among the bells, flitting through the eilent spaces. Giotto, commanded by the city to build an edifice which in height and richness was to surpass any previous structure in the world's history, in 1334 laid the cornerstone of his great tower. Xo expense was spared, and some of the greatest artists worked upon it. Sculptures by Donatello, Andrea Pisano and Luca della Robbia decorate the basement story and comprise several series of subjects the seven liberal arts and sciences, the seven cardinal virtues, the seven works of mercy, the invention of navigation, besides many religious and historical subjects from tbe creation down. The pper three stories are ornamented with spiral shafts and carved moldingand the whole is built in alternate! courses of black and white marble, the contrasting tints of whidh have been mellowed and softenedby time. A young theological student, who is about to depart for the missionary fields, told an amusing story oji himself the other evening that gives an insight to the cause that led to his determining to preach the gospel to the heathen. He had called on a young lady, and her little brother posted himself in an armchair facing a handsome gilt clock. He had been there half an hour when the young lady said, "Robbie, why don't you go to the nursery?" "I am waiting," replied Robbie. "What are you waiting for, my dear." "Why, for his face to stop tbe clock. You know what you said." Philadelphia Call.
