A REPUBLIC Or CHCRCHE. The conititntion of the United Statea while distinctly ordaining aeparation of church and state, quite aa distinctly reoogairea the Chriatian religion. Bat
it recognizes no state church or any religious qualification for political office
or position. It says: "2o religious test shall ever be required aa a qaalification to any office or public trust under the
United Statea," and that "Congress
shall make no law reapecting an establish men t of religion or prohibiting the free exerciae thereof." These provis
ions relate orJy to the federal government, but they are substantially adopted by the several states, and therefore religious liberty is guaranteed in all the statea, though in a few states a belief in a Supreme being is required to obtain political position. In discussing

"It is ia easy to see in reading the history of our country that religion and

portions and the distribution of this
element, and the extent of the instrumentalities with which it works, in a
most interesting and instructive man

For a great inaoy years doctors pro

Watches at .Spencer's. Good Music. The Italian musicians who were in
the city yesterday furnished music that would be a pretty fair standard for local musicians. The combination of flute,
harp and violin is the finest possible,
and these gentlemen knew how to use them almost to perfection. The music used was the finest and most difficult classical music, yet it was rendered with
ease, acouraoy and expression. J. hey played nothing by ear, but kept their music constantly before them.
