Catarrh IS a blood disease. Cntil tne poison is expelled from the system, there cart be no cure for thin loathsome and
dangerous malady. Therefore, the only effective treatment is a thorough coarse 01 ajm i aaraaparlllsi the bent of all blood purifiers. The sooner you begin the better ; delay is dangerous. " I was troubled with catarrh for over two years. I tried various remedies, and was treated by a number of physicians, but received no benefit until I began to take Ayer's Sarsaparilla. A few bottles of this medicine cured me of this troublesome complaint and completely restored my health." Jesse it. iioggs, Holman's Mills, C. " When Ayer's Sarsaparilla was recommended to me for catarrh, I was inclined to doubt its efficacy. Having tried so many remedies, with little benefit, I had no faith that anything would cure me. I became emaciated from loss of appetite and impaired digestion. I bad nearly lost the sense of smell, and my system was badly deranged. I was bout discouraged, when a friend urged me to try Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and referred me to persons whom it had cured of catarrh. After taking half a dozen bottles of this medicine, I am convinced that the only sure way of treating this obstinate disease is through the blood." Charles II. Maloney, 113 Kiver St., Lowell, Mass. SCHOOL OVtft A GROCERY.
sVaawsiBC Eplaodas Told by a Pioneer Scho-ol Teacher of Lead vi Lie. I tangbt one of the first schools erer tantrht in the frreat mining cainn of ! LeatlviHe, Colo., and naturally enough t v.. .1 . ...... 1 j periences. Tlie schoolroom was the second floor of a two story low building, the lower floor being- used for a grocery store. Everything in the schoolroom was of the most primitive kind. The seats were long pine benches. There were no desks, no blackboards and not an inch of plastering in the whole building. There was nothing between the grocerv store and the schoolroom but a loosely laid -floor of unseasoned pine that became looser as it seasoned. It was, unfortunately, full of knot holes, and whenever a customer came into the store for a bar of soap or a pound of sugar, the school heard the entire transaction, and as the merchant was a very loquacious man we often heard some funny things. The schoolroom water pail was kept on a pine box at one end of the room and it was accidentally overturned a good many times that winter, and, strangely enough, the bovs sitting near it could never tell just "how these accidents happened, but they always occurred when there were more than the usual number of customers in the store below, and they never failed to throw the school into paroxysms of joy. The effect was different on the groceryman. "Here you. Mister Teacher I" he would roar up to me. "Well, what is it?" I would ask in as calm and dignified a manner as I could assume when talking through knot holes at my feet. "Them boys is pourin' water down here ag'in and wettin' my goods and my customers, and I ain't goin' to stand it?" "Boys !" I would say sternly, "did any of you upset that pail?" "No, sir," would come from a dozen of the innocent ones. "And they did I" the groceryman would shriek out, "you just come down here and see 1 If you can't make 'em behave I kin now and I'll do it tool" One day he carried his threat into ex ecution. There were several customers in the store and I was busy with a class in geography when an ominous splash and the giggling of two boys told me that the newly filled water pail had rone over again. There were little feminine shrieks below, and the next minute the grocer, sugar scoop in nana, appeared in the school room. vv ltuout deie-ninff to notice me he ran back to where the overturned pail was and began laying about him with the sugar scoop, and before I could re cover from any amazement nearly every pupil had gone shrieking and laughing down the stairs, with the irate grocer in mad pursuit, hammer ing away with the scoop on the heads and backs ot the guilty and the inno cent alike. A few minutes later he roared up the tiirougn tne knot noles: "JNow, if you cant make them youngsters beJiave themselves and have some manners, I kin 1" Ihis singular lesson m courtesy had such a salutary effect on the school that the pail was not overturned again for two whole days. The next week we moved into a new and better room on the ground floor, greatlv to the delight of the grocer. J. L. Harbour in " ide Awake. Eating- by Smell. 'Talking o' people eating," said a robust looking woman and the reporter of an exchange at the same time, "did you know that a great many people take the most of their food through their nose?" "What do you mean by that!" inquired her friend. "Just this. I can satisfy my hunger at any time by merely inhaling the odor of good cooking. The aroma of coffee, for instance, sustains and exhilarates me. A beefsteak flavor is as satisfying as a full meal. Any cook will tell you that." "Then why should people eat?" "They don't eat when they can get a full meal of cooking odors. This is why tramps hang around the open doors of kitchens and restaurants. Did you never feast on the smell of warm gingerbread ? I am very fond of candy, Dut I never eat it, as the substance does not agree with me. But I buy a box of it every week, and when I feel candy hungry I take the coveroff and inhale the delicious flavors. The candy itself I give away to those who are not yet educated up to feeding through the olfactories." The friend looked at her in amazement, but she only remarked, sadly: "What an awful thing it is to t-e a crank." Superstition. The days of superstition are by no means over. There are women, not over conscientious in the discharge of religious observances, who would sooner disconcert a hostess and throw a roomful of guests into confusion than sit down with twelve others at the dinner table. The lover will not give his sweetheart an opal ring, however pretty the stone may be; the guest at the table shudders when he spills the salt, and furtively tries to propitiate fate by throwing a few grains over his shoulder. Penknives and scissors are tabooed as presents. Many a man would choose any day in the week but Friday for starting on a journey, or beginning some great enterprise. Many a woman dislikes (apart from sympathetic sentiment) to meet a funeral or encounter a black cat. Young Ladies' Journal. Coo2dDt Account for the Xante. fifth child was a few weeks old. "only you must call him John." The father had had his own way with the other four, and it was no more than fair that he should consult his wife's taste for once. It is a pleasure to see husbands thus considerate. The Detroit Tribune records a similar instance: An elderly couple entered a dry goods store on Woodward avenue. He was slim and tall, and she was round and short. "My wife and I have come to do some shopping," he said to the clerk. "Indeed?" "Yes; my wife wants a new dress to take home." , "Ah!" "Just show her what you have. Let her select whatever she wants." "What line of goods will you have, madam ?" asked the clerk. "Oh, something in silk," answered j the husband for her. The clerk took down a roll of bright colored patterns. "How does that please you, madam I" he asked. "No, that is too bright, said the husband. i "How do you like this, madam f asked the clerk, displaying another rolL ' "No, my wife doesn't like that," he returned. "It is too dark." Asrain and acuin the clerk displayed his wares before them, always appealing to the taste of his wife, and being answered by the husband. "Well," said the latter at lenjrtb. "I guess this piece will do. Wrap it When they were on the street he said to his wife: "That's a nice piece of goods you se lected. Mary." A look of quiet humor stole into the the old lady's eyes, but she merely an swered, quieuv, assne giancea aneononately into nis iace: "Do you think so, John?" The Dor and tbo Baby. She sat in the Long Island depot and fondled a dude dog, while the nurse girl earned a little human member of the family. The dude dog's nair was banged over its forehead. and all it wanted was a pair of knee breeches and a butter cracker hat to be mistaken for a lawn tennis player Jookin? lor some cnrls to nave a srame, Its tail was shaved off almost up to the terminus, where there was a miniature duster that gave it the appearance of a putty blower with a feather stuck in the end. The clerk opened the window witn a bang, and tne fashionably dressed lady turned to purchase her ticket, leaving tne dog on the floor. Two horny handed sons of toil entered the waiting room bearing a trunk the size of a canal boat. They evidently mis'. .k the dude dog for a door mat, for they placed the trunk on its outer edge. A man who stood beside the lady at the ticket window remarked : "Be huvins, Oi do be thinkin' that wan av yer family's in trouble 1" She thought he referred to the bahy and took no notice of the remark. Suddenly there was a scream from the nurse girl. She let the baby fall and hurried to the rescue. The lady turned and took in the situation at a glance. Then she swooned. She kept on fainting up to the arrival of the train and then revived long enough to berate the nurse for her carelessness. When they took the dog from under the trunk the poor little fellow looked for all the world like a surrogate's seal, and his tail wasn't fat enough for a paper cutter. The station hands hauled the forgotten baby into the train just as the latter was moving off. and it was clapped down on a seat and spanked until it looked like the Fourth of July. Brooklyn Citizen. The American Naval Officer. One of the host compliments which I have heard of as paid to the officers of the "squadron of evolution" was from an Englishman, who had long been a resident of Boston. He said he was struck by the gentlemanly and modest demeanor of these wearers of uniforms, which impressed him as differing greatly from the consequential, not to say arrogant, air of ollicers of British men-of-war. This peculiarity, he said, extended to the sailors, who were as courteous as the officers in affording information. "Why, that squadron," he said, "will furnish abetter argument for republicanism than any number of South American revolutions. It seems to me that a tribute of this sort from a foreigner is exceedingly satisfactory and it opens up considerations of the relation of manners to official life which have a wide application. The Englishmen said he had seen gray haired sailors iu the British navy insulted by beardless midshipmen, and he was much impressed by the self respecting appearance of "Jack" on board the squadron of evolution, and under this head he included seamen of various nationalities, not excepting: Chinese cooks, as similated by American discipline IX)SlOn MTO&L Oyster Ei-rerm. The liver of the oyster if he will forgive a reference to such a delicate matter is his most important feature. So say the learned men. The liver mass is very dark in color and can be easily seen with the naked eye. The size and importance of this tissue, says Professor Kice, is what makes the oyster so grateful to delicate stomachs. A diet of raws will cure dyspepsia, he says, and he lays it to the fiver. Similia similibus curantur. Speaking of livers, it is a curious fact that, although intended by nature to lead a sedentary life, the oyster thrives upon exercise. If he becomes attached to the hull of a vessel or the shell of some movable animal, like a lobster, for instance, he will be a bigger and healthier oyster in consequence. But he can do a great deal of "settin' still" and yet not suffer from enlargement of the liver. St. Louis Globe-Democrat. IS laFK WUH1H LtVlSe?
