Excellent Par ateed by Dr. MlbBKirw The attendance at the Tuesday Club last night was not quite so large aa it would have been on acoount of the very inclement weather. Those who were not able to be there misted a rare treat. The president, Wm. Dudley foulke, oalled the elub to order at 8 p. m.. and announoed that Dr. Hibberd would read a caper on Louis Agasaii. For the next hour the club was admirably entertained in liatening to an able and exhauttive review ot the life and labors ot this treat aoieotitt in the realm of natural history. He waa born in Ger many in the early part ot this century. and early had a great liking ot animals of all kinds. After reoeiving a liberal eduoation and studying medioine in the treat universities of Germany, he eoneluded to devote his lite to the study of soienee. He tpent much time in Franee among the great naturalist! ot .Paris and for many years tpent his summers in Switzerland studying glaoiert, which resulted in hit confirming the present adoDted theory ot slaoial deposits. He came to America in 1846. and delivered a course of lectures in diflerent cities on "The Plan ot Creation, Besolving to make America hia home. he accepted a professorship ot nat ural history at Harvard. He colleoted the great museum ot natural history now to be aeen at Harvard. He was not a believer in the theory of evo lution at propoted by Darwin and other advanced thinkers ot hie day: but believed that the animal kingdom waa built upon a plan ; that aa the geological condition ot the earth advanced new tpeoies of animals were created adapted to its oondition. and when the earth reaobed its perfect oondition man was oreated as the crowning part ot the work of the Creator. He often said: Theologians have yet to learn that. physical fact is as sacred as a moral principle." The discussion was sot as animated as it should have been following such an exoellent paper too many having nothing to say. Speeohes were made by Dr. L. C. Johnson, of Fountain City: Dr. Bond.
