Tli. laabllltjr Qaeatloau Washington, Sept. 1. Now that the confidence in the President's recovery is being restored the subject of the executive business is again discussed and in connection with it the probability and feasibility of General Arthur being called
upon to act as President until President Garfield is sufficiently recovered to warrant his resumption of executive duties. The fact cannot well be overlooked that in every department of the government there are matters in status quo that require the action of the chief executive, an 1 how long they can remain so, without positive detriment to the public interests, is a question that muit soon be met. Although it it posi
tively known that no meeting of the Cabinet has been had or called to discuss the
subject, yet it is acknowledged bv the Cabinet officers that several informal exchanges of opinion have been indulged in, and it has been found that grave dif-
lerences exist as to the wisdom ot such a
step, not the least consideration being
the possble effect upon General Garfield in bis present weak state, if, as it must necessarily be, the matter is called to his attention. It is well known that even, notwithstanding the assurance of his physicians and friends, that the public business is in no way suf fering through his con timed durability, he nevertheless thinks much upon the subject, no bitter evidence being needed ban the fact that during his recent delirium his incoherent utterances were; constantly and entirely in relation to public matters, and ic is feared his re covery might be seriously retarded by the knowledge, if it was deemed necessary for another to perform his constitutional duties. It is safe to say this step
will not be advised by the Cabinet at present.

Dr. Iluf nton Interviewed. Washington, Sept 1. The President
is having a quiet, comfortable day. He chewed another piece of beef tteak and swallowed the juice early this morning, and since then has had a little chicken cooked in milk beside the usual allowance of beef extract and porridge. All the symptoms continue favorable. In a conversation this forenoon Dr. Boynton said the President is doing as nicely as they could wish to have him. The slight fever which occurred last evening and which is referred to in this morning's bulletin was not, Dr. Boynton thinks, a matter of any great consequence; its duration was transient and it was nothing more tliiu one of the fluctuations which
are to bo anticipated so long as the patient remains in bis present weak state. "Has he gained any in bodily strength!" inquired the reporter. "Not a great deal. I think he made a little progress in that respect yesterday as much as we could reasonably expect His general appearance, however, has im proved considerably." can be moved!"
"I can not say definitely. It depends
upon the progress which he makes during the next few days. If he continues
to improve as rapidly as he has during
Uie past thirty-six hours, it will be safe

A strange Mnlclde. Detroit, Sept 1. Quite a remarkable case of suicide occurred a few miles from Ithaca, Gratiot county, this State, Sunday last A man named Martin K. Walker, lived on a small farm there, formerly a prosperous stock raiser in California; but 16 years ago come east and five years ago settled on the place of his last residence. Drink and gambling were his besetting sins, and he finally lost pretty much all his little property remaining. He went into a fleld.stripped himself of his clothes, fired a brush heap.put a gun to his head, snapped it three times without dischaging it, intending to kill himself and allow his body to fall on the burning pile.
Sunday last he earned this singular at
tempt at suicide into effect and was found with the top of his head completely blown off, and his naked body partly burned, on a blazing brush heap, which he had kindled. He left a letter announcing his dettrmination and expressing confirmed hopef nines as to himself and warning his children to avoid whisky. He leaves a wife and several grown-up children. nies explicitly that he ever wrote or knew anything about any such letter. These efforts to frighten Germans from leaving the Fatherland, where trade is in a bad condition, where taxes are heavy and where the enormous military establishment is eating out the very life of the nation, to come to America, where
they can greatly better their condition, are sure to result in failure. The multi

The Tahoe Tmttur asserts that a great many erroneous ideas about Lake Tahoe
are in circulation, and announces that hereafter it shall be a special part of its business to correct them. Here is the first installment of corrections: "It is situated 6,220 feet above the sea, is 22 miles long from north to south and 12
miles wide, the general contour being a parallelogram.' The greatest measured
depth that we have good authority for is 1,506 feet The temperature never goes below 39 deg. Fahrenheit, and in the eujimer never above 60 deg. unless it be near the shore in some sheltered cove or where a stream of sun-warmed water runs into it. At a depth of i
500 feet the temperature never changes, being 89i degrees. This fact accounts Icr another that of drowned persons never rising the water being so cold that no gases are generated; hence the body in time simply goes to pieces from the action of the water. It is as buoyant as any other pure water at the same altitude, there lieing no appreciable difference in the readings of the hydrometer; hence the statements that wood does not float for any time, persons can not swim, and the like, are fallacies. The air being very light at this elevation above the level of the sea, exercise of any kind, either on land or water, can not be so long continued as in lower and heavier atmospheres."

Cincinnati Oasette. A rather ludicrous incident illustra tive of the speculative mania which has seized on people of all stations in life,
a ad at the same time a good enough joke on one of our prominent merchants, occurred yesterday as the result of the unusual decline in the Chicago wheat market. Mr. Charles Fox, of the firm of Fox & ThoniHS, h-d tutored a Uiusjiial establishment, aiid, divesting himself of his coat and vest, had made himself comfortable, and submitted his face to the razor of one of the colored gentlemen, who, of course, entertained him on all the topics of the day. One side of the face had been lathered and shaved, and the other was just undergoing the
first operation, when a dusky friend of the barber rushed frantically in, shouting, "October wheat's down to twentytwo and three-quarters." The barber dropped his razor, and even left off in the middle of his conversation, and with
no further explanation than "got to go t" the bucket shop," started for the door. Mr. Fox suggested mildly that his face lacked that symmetry which is necessary to beauty. The specula'or only answered as he rushed out of the door, "Can't help it; ain't got no time; got to go to the bucket shop." Trjrlna teCbeck Ciermaa ICmig-ration New York Tribune.
The unscrupulous methods resorted to in Germany to check emigration are shown by the publication of a Prussian newspaper of a letter professedly from

It is farther asserted that it is very difficult to get work in this country, that many emigrants who have come here are in the direst distress, and that if the exodus from Germany to America doea not cease or greatly diminish the emigrants will suffer the most frightful destitution- Persona who oppose emigration evidently believe in heroic doaea of mendacity to accomplish their object. It would be hard to get together more lies than in the same space. The German Consul General, of course, had nothing to do with the matter. Be is a gentleman of high character, and he de-
