THE INDIANAPOLS, DELPHI & CHIGAGO BAILROAD.
The limited space at the disposal of Tur Union this week forbids such n report of the proceedings at Delphi last Thursday in celebration of the profit of the formal opening to hifsinesNof the Indiannpolis, Delphi k Chicago railroad fiom. Rensselaer to that city as their interesting nature demands. Ono of tlrifeity papers, the Timer, which is nearly rt fourth larger than Tllb Union, occupies nearly eight columns with a report, which, though excellent, is far fltom exhaustive. Briefly, then, a large body of people assembled to rejoice over the event. It is estimated that between five thousand and eight thousand persons were present. one thousand went over from Jasper county. Indianapolis was represented by nine members of the Board of Trade, among whom was Geo.W. Geiger, formerly of the city council. Every town between Indianapolis and Delphi Which by any possibility is likely to be influenced by the construction of the road southward and eastward, was represented by delegations more or less nqnierous. Lake county, between here and Chicago, also had her interests represented on this interesting ocnnfl'inn
O f speeches congratulatory, hopeful and sheering, of happy hits and repartee, of satisfaction and rejoicing certainly the good people beard and had enough for uue day. The city was gny with flags, crowded with humanity, and lavish of hospitality. Col. Yeoman, generab manager of the railroad company, and his confrlers, were among tl.e happiest of the happy and the proudest of those who felt something valuable had been done—-had been accomplished by them—had been Wrought in spite ts? tire opposition of stubborn obstacles and dis couraging surroundings. Those who discharged themselves creditably in their endeavors to entertainitbcpeoplc by congratulatory speeches were Hon. Erpstufi W. Hubbard, Col. S. N. Yeoman, Dr. J. T. Richardson, Mr. Scott of Indianapolis, Major Palmer of Indianapolis, Mr. Geiger of Indianapolis, Hon. Leander McClurg of Erankfort, Hon. John N. Morrison of Frankfort, O. M. Bernard of Burlington, Major Watker, Judge Schermerhorn, L. 8.-Sims, Dr. E. \V. H. Beck, Judge Daily, Enoch Cox the editor orator, Hou. R. S, Dwiggins of Rensselaer. But about the most interesting part of the ceremonies was the presentation of a fine gold watch to Col. Yeoman by the employes of the road. The speech of presentation was made by Hon. Judson Applegate, master of ceremonies for the occasion. It was a complete surprise and one happily chosen and well bestowed* Of the hospitality of the people of Delphi no praise cap be too high. They furnished an immense feast for the multitude and threw wide open the doors which lead to their dining rooms. Especially here would we mention the landlord of the Knight House, whose attentions were ceaseless. But they had a larger crowd to entertain than they had expected and were compelled to confess it. At night the festivity closed with two balls where every thing was mirth.
TO PATRONS.
A contract has been signed and delivered by which the mechanical appurtenances and subscription list of Tub Union newspaper office become the property of Mr. Major Bitters on the 15th day of October, proximo. Mr. Bitters has had veteran experience in journalism, having been connected with the Peru Republican, and the Rochester Spy—two of the best class provincial newspapers in this state—the first named eleven years, and the last five or six years. He is a stalwart republican in political doctrine, an excellent writer, an industrious newrf gatherer, an enterprising business man, and commands capital enough tq enlarge the capacity of the office he has bought to meet the rapidly increasing demands of the business of The proprietor who is upon the eve of retiring from the newspaper which he assisted to establish and In fact has controlled eleven years, and who will propably retire forever from the editorial profession, would most gratefully thank a people with whose interests he has been identified for more than a quarter of a century for their uniform kindness i to liyn and to those most dear to him. Never can he forget that liberal charity whoso broad mantle was ample to cover the foibles of bis -childhood \apd to bide the deiedts of laiek'years. He must ever feel a kindly affection for those good hearts which swelled with as he and his gentle companion bid tbeir darlings forever from sight behind the dark panoply of the grave. While life lasts and reason endures he cannot forget their business favors, their social kindness, the partiality that has honored feini beyond his merit. He asks as a parting' favor of the patrons of Jhk mafiy

of whom have'givcn it unwavering popport from its birth, that they glvo to his successor, who more abundantly able to reciprocate, the liberal patronage which has made it the most successful of the dozen’newspaper ventures that Eave had birth in Jasper do m ty. To-day The Union enjoys a larger circulation both local and without the county limits than it ever attained even in the days before competitors wore in tho field. The gentleman who succeeds to its management will bring new and improved machinery, will efilarge’the paper, and-make it every way more worthy of support. All accounts for subscription or other claims should be settled at once and receipts taken therefor JO avoid possible disputes. Horace Tr. James only has authority to' nlrfke settlements and give receipts. The’Delphi Timet challenges The Union to name over the ex soldiers of the Union army who are now editing republican newspapersjin Indiana. We prefer!to wait and see whether the Solid South party isj'o control the government before venturing to saVj anything!which may disgrace our'contemporaries in the "estimation of the public.)

Preachers should not look Kt the pretty girls|while talking gospel. The sorghum mitts have commenced to squezc out the sweetness in Barkley. Preaching’rext Saturday evening and Sunday at Randle’s school house by Elder Rhorer. J. G. Braddock has'traded his farm for one in Milroy township. The exchange was made With Geo. Kann al. It is said Mr. Haste has been offered quite a gift of land to move his saw mill to Arkansas. It is Arkansas land, of course'. Mr. Rooney commenced school at Cosey Palace September Ist. He is teaching a full term of two months instead of a spring term, fie has a seven months engagement in that district. There has been a number ,of cases of typhoid fever in the northwestern part of the townsnip—Mrs. Goff, two of George Beasey’s boys, and Lewis Davisson’s youngest girl. All are improving under the careful attention and skillluljreatment of Dr. Washburn.
We Triumph.
ft hnS been “in the air,” and We have “felt it in our bones,” that Maine would this year register a republican triumph. The republican greenbackers who left the party at the last election there have had too many calls to return. They saw a greater danger to the country than the peril of “hard money.” They comprehend that we better first make sure that we had a country to make financial laws for, before we went to work quarreling over the laws we should make. They saw the lise, the advance, and the insolence of the brigadiers. They saw liberty <rt speech and of the ballot throttled in the south; saw not only republicanism driven out of that country, but every expression of opinion unfavorably to democracy stifled. .They comprehended that for the present there can bebut two parties in this country, and but one great issue, and that issue whether the men who lost all on the field shall recover everything at the ballotbo*. And so the republican greenbackers of Maine, or enough of them for all practical purposes, Laving this question before them, and seeing their duty, answered “No,” voted “no,’’ and to-day we place the extreme Eastern commonwealth alongside the extreme Western, both doubtful a few weeks ago, and point the “solid South” U> them as the begiuning of Northern unification. The report of that Dixon gun is echoing back to the South from the Northern latitudes, and before the sound dies away tho Yazoo ruffians will think the artillery of heaven has opened upon them. r <
