An excellent drill is being given in the Normal upon the use of the diacritical marks. By bringing them practically before the student in a daily written s|»clling exorcise lie is better able to form u rational ctincejs tiou of their use, than in any other wav. Few teachers understand how apply these marks properly iiPrep--1 resenting the different sounds of the letters when writing a word phonetically. Hence this class, which includes nearly the whole school, was organized to meet a long felt need on the pait of teachers attending the Normal. The new arrivals at the Normal during the past week are: Mrs. Anisic (I. Pillars, Miss Belle Pliegley, Miss Emma Hammond, Miss Emma Pierce of Marion township, John E. A!t»r of Union township, Charles Peregrine of Hanging drove township, D. W. Ferry and Ferry of Carpenter township. These are mostly teachers who know their wunts. They readily catch inspiration from the recitations, and go to work with the will and the •energy that insure success.
A Christian Temperance 1 Uuion society wan organized Monday night. Chailes If. Price president, Samson Erwin and Sylvester Ilealy vice presidents, Mrs. It. S. DwigI gins corresponding secretary, Win. E. Sears recording secretary, Dr. I. 11, Wash burn treasurer. F. J. Sears, E. P. Hammond, Hon. I*. S. Dwiggins, Ira W. Yeoman, «J. I*. Warner, .Mrs. A. Thompson, Miss Candace A. Boroughs, executive committee. Mr. L. E. Dunning, who is rusticating in Newton township, with headquarters at Win. Paxton's, is a photographic artist of high ability. Specimens of his productions called crystal ivory types,, sliown in the pos t office a- tew days since, arc most exquisite pictures. It is difficult to conceive how any improveufent could be made upon them, lie may remain in the county several weeks and while here will execute orders for enlarging and perfecting pictures by this process. Do will also, if desired, leach the art to others. A lire was discovered day before yesterday, in season to prevent disastorous con sequences, in the litter in the space between tire wooden buildings on Washington stree t occupied hy Warner’s hardu are store, Rhoades’ barber simp, Kern’s gro- ! eery, llenkle cfc Co’s restaurant, I Jones’ tailor shop, didders’ hardware store, a family dwelling and a wooden both]iug nn Front stree t occupied hy Grand’s harness shop and Uonwcll's wagon shop. The practical hints from this dangerous incident are throe, viz.: Clean the combustible and decaying trash out of that filthy court, this the town authorities should have -done at once. Prevent lire deposit of ignited cigar stuinpßor of smouldering wood ashes, or tire building of bonfires by children, in that place; this should enlist the ever constant vigilance of the tenants. Replace every one of those old dilapidated tire-traps and pestilence breeders with decent brick building; this is the duty of landlords which they would find contributing largely and permanently to their material interests. A tire well under head way before discovered would sweep off every businesstduui.se on that square in spite of everything that could he done by the inhabitants to arrest it. On last Sunday night ..the people who dwell near the northern extremity of Van Rensselaer street were treated to the sensation of a delectable family row. A miss in years old had been out riding with her betrothed suitor later into the night than her excellent mother thought was seemly or decorous. Upon entering the gate to the pathway leading to the front dooroflhe mother’s domicile she was met hy her offended parent, who proceeded to administer corpora} chastise- j ntetrt. The maiden called for help; i lover responded in person ready and anxious to defend his beloved at the cost of his own gore; big brother and big brother’s wife appeared; neighbors were summoned, and then the play began. A bad j deal ol promiscuous family remiius- j .censes, was poured out by tlfe voices of the uighf}' and the lug brother and stalwart lover engaged hr the fuendly diversion of choking andjclaret-tapping. After one or two acts of the melo-elrama were played a judicious neighbor who had been elected umpire succeeded in persuading’the belligerent forces to observe a temporary truce' while j • lover and maiden made public and solemn pledges of evqriasting adl miration and eternal fidelity to the ! cause for which the brother had ! i shed a eoifious sho.wer ot nose- 1 : Wood; brother and prospective i brother-in-law pasionately We in-! braced across the bloody clui-nj; > [ the audience was dismissed with | I' thank's for (heir liberal patronage,; j kind attention, and good order p : nTgliti-utn»4-- femalxis—disappaamL i from front gates; peace spread, its : j Sabbath pinions once more over the neighborhood, and charity dropped her curtain to. the IfSpii ititig of a oat aac.t----f : V
