Hud. very bad wenlher fi*r hnr vesting. Showery, close and exceedingly warm. Just the condilions,' top, to promote cholera morbus and diseases of tbo stomach and bo\yels. People cannot bo too cleanly In person or of premises nor too careful of their diet. Little children, from babyhood up to six or eight years old, need Increased attention during the heated, steaming term. While on this subject of health perhaps It may not bo amiss to kindly suggest to the very efficient marshal of Rensselaer that he cannot serve Ills constituents to better purpose than by inspecting the alleys and back yards and compelling the removal of all filth, which, under tbo decomposing! influences of moisture and heat, breed all manner of noisome smells and fatal sicknesses. Every bog-pen, privy vault and stable yard within the corporation limits, mid every slop barrel, sink, back yard and butcher shop in the most thickly inhabited part of town should receive immediate attention— should be thoroughly cleaned and supplied libfemlly with dlsfutectants. This work cannot be done 100 thoroughly nor toosoou. —_i. The meeting of the Ladies’ Society at the blisses Smith’s Thursday last was a happy event. Tnose who weie present at the regular exercises speak of them in flattering terrtW. The discussion was pronounced ingenious, the essayo showed marks careful preparation, tiro readings were selectwith judgment and executed with ti&te, and the address of Mrs. R. 8. Ijhviggins, the novel event of the day, wW„decidedly original, unique and lmpp?. Finally, tire out-door collation, to which, only, the gentlemen were invited, was everything that the kindest, neatest, most refined, fairest, sweetest, truest and best wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and sweethearts could suggest for the palate-pleasing of those whom they revere and love. Rightly has it been said that the Ladies' Society ranks ftmong the most important of the Social institutions of Rensselaer whoso mission is to refine tlie manners, improve the tastes, elevate tlic morals and cultivate the sociability dnd friendships of tire people. Ali honor to the women who arc its members. No less thau 552 miles of new railroads are under contract in tliis state for building this year. More than half, about 00 per cent., of this mileage is narrow gauge. Not since 1873 lias the railroad building fever been at so fervent heat, and never before was there a more practical view of the transportation problem. The narrow gauge system of railroads seems to asburo rapid- transit, ease of management and ample capacity for the ordinary demands of business and travel, at least for all save jHissibly Lire great trunk lines, and it is an open question if not for these, too, at a minimum of Cost for construction and operation. The systdln is more economical under every aspect than the standard gauge railroad while it performs ail or nearly all that is now required of the latter; and it is far suf>erior for the purpose thau any system of artificial water ways for cold latitudes that has yet been prouglit to public notice. „ At the meeting of the board of town trustees, last Monday night, the clerk presented the tax duplicate for 187!), which was received; and the marshal was ordered to collect the same in 90 days. Passed an ordinance Introduced by Trusted Scott, prohibiting drunkenness, loud ana ijoisterous talking, bathing in a nude condition, fighting or attempting to tight, within the corporation; and empowered tho marshal to arrest oil sight all persons violating the provisions of this act.
It now appears very doubtful that a fair will be held at Rensselaer this approaching fall. The general public seem so indifferent upon the subject that those who have hitherto been active to promote the enterprise are in a degree discouraged. At a meeting <>f the board of directors Saturday last, \V. J. lines was appointed to solicit subscriptions to the capital stock, the amount necessary for establishing tho society upon a working basis not having been secured yet.
