Report says that another recruit is soon to join tho noble army, and business promises to boom right along, like the Grant movement. Fine Calf. —Addison I nikison, Barkley township,- has a Durham grade steer dropped a year ago last September, that weighs 1,400 pounds. Cattle men of observation and experience say that it is probably tho finest creature of the kind and age on the American continent.

Quarterly conference at 2:30 p. m. on Saturday, Rev. C. S. Burgner will conduct the exercises. School Retort.—Miss Belle Booth, teacher of school No. 2, Wheatfield township, reports for the month that ended Match 7th, an enrollment of 14 scholars, with an average daily attendance of 9.4. The schoiais perfect in attendance, punctuality and conduct were Sadie Muffley, Howard X'ullina and Jessie Crawford. Gone West.—Dr. Ira C. Kelley, dentist, departed from town late Saturday night or early Sunday morning without saying good bye to all of his acquaintances. It is surmised that be has gone to Leadville, Colorado. A man named Murphy, living four miles north of town, disappeared about the same time and as mysteriously. S chool Report. —Miss Cl ara Coen, teacher of school No. 2, Barkley township, reports for tire mouth ending March 8, 1879, the enrolling of 15 scholars; the average daily attendance was 13. 7. Test, of Indianapolis, formerly judge of the circuit to which Jasper county belonged, is in attendance upon the term of court now in' session in Rensselaer. The business cards arc neatly and tastily arranged and the lettering artistically executed. It beats our “Grandfather's Clock” nil to pieces. Almost a Fi«B.-g-Tbis morning about 4 o’clock the inmates of Mrs. H-award’s residence, on V anltcqsSelacr slrcet, were aroused to find themselves almost suffocated with smoke, which, upon investigation, was found to be issuing from under the stove in the sitting room. A long slick of wood had been put in the stove to keep fire during the uignt and about the timementionc<l fell against the stoVe door, bursting it open and letting a live coal fall out upon the carpet. Fortunately the fire was discovered in season to prevent serious results. While swinging on the gate in front of her mother’s residence the balmy zephyrs of evening were rustling mournfully through the boughs of the old pine tree. His arm was gently encircling her waist. Amid this dream of hap piness he was heard to exclaim with pathetic tenderness, “How oft would I have gathered you under my wing as the old hen gatli creth her chickens, but your ma "would not let me.” Just then that beloved spot was converted into a howling wilderness by the raising of a second story window from which descended a shower of bootjacks and other missiles on the unoffending twain. The young man “Bulibed:uh!' its -he moved rapidly up Front street the voice of the intended mother in-law was heard to exclaim: “Maggie, you 1 know we don’t want a Patton on that old gate; there is nothing new or novel about it.” *

The one* thing needful to make ours one of the prettiest towns in the state is a thorough system of good streets and sidewalks. With due respect for the statements of the Democratic Sentinel , as a matter of justice to a worthy gentleman i; may not be misappropriate to say that Rev. Hope B. Miller did not comprise One company of whom it wits reported were in a “limber condition on their arrival” at Michigan G;ry on Monday of last week. Mr, Miller only went as far ns Bradford and returned home op the same day. Will “U” please inform an anxious public which one of the three gentlemen he named— Charles H. Price, Hope B.
