Will Mr. Major Explain This?
By reference to the senate journal of I 8"», we ftnd that Mr. Major, senator from tins dietric', introduced bill So. ood, “to release eay interest which tony exist in the state in the bed of heater Lake, in Newton county, and to settle conflicting claims thereto.” The bill woe rend Feb. 22<1 ana referred to the committee on judiciary, which reported it back on the Oth of Manta and recommended it to lie indefinitely (loetponed. The true inwar leess of this measure was u bold attempt of Hichard Bright to rob the state and others of their interest in this territory mid Major became the willing tool to perpetrate the infamy. Bright desired to steal a quit-c'aim deed to ’♦sky belonging to the tax-payers of Indi*aa, atMb- Major was employed to coiniiijt the theft. When Bright and Major found th« committee had discovered their trick they tried to get possession of the bill to prevent Us being reported back to the senate, both pleadiug ignorance of its contents. Mr. Major is now seeking to be - returned to the state senate, and it is therefore important that the people know something of the record be made while serving'thcm l>efore. Has he anything to offer in explanation *f the attempted swindle above mmliooedT While Mr. Major is going about ilie county, making speeches for his re election, let him tell the people what he knows about swamp lands in general aud of Beaver Luke in particular. The Prospect.
In response to the question at to his estimate of the prospects of tire parly, us seen to-day, Mr. (iniLain, secretary of the natioual republican committee, said:l“Tke republican parly never fiught with more pluck or energy than uuw. The candidates »n<l committees address us letters constantly assuring us of good prospects in hitherto close districts. Ihe reports from Ohio arc especially encouraging in ihe districts where the contest is being waged .the hottest. There Mem (o be no quarrels Anywhere in Ihe elate. The Indiana people are fighting equally well. Personal fut'erviewa with gentlemen from that stale, as well as many letters from the, highest eource, give good promise! in that close Uu-lie-field. We are almost certain to carry Colorado. Of course, in Ohio there is no setious contest. In West the currency' question j» I reakiog upon the democratic solidity, aud may cripple that party to the extent of one district, If not two. These arc the October states, and the results in th«tn will largely nfiect the results in the November state*. ’ It is conceded on every band that the democratic party will sustain great losses, and that it will t>e well nigh destroyed in some of the northwestern states, ns it lias been in Maine. r
