Survey of the Kankakee River.
Gen. NewcU Gleason, of Laporto, L'..-. Assistant F.nginecr, acting under the nut Itority of tlie War Department hy appointment ol Major Jated A. Smith, of engineers, stationed at Indianapolis, vi*itcd this city last week, and returned last Tuesday. Me is engaged in n survey of the Kauknkcc rivet, having in View Its Improvement as it navigntilestream. The expense of tlie sutvey will be defrayed from general appropriation made by the last €> ncress, the proportion for this river being assigned hy the war department. Gen. Gleason, last week, made an examination, in drinrpany with the mayor and several citizens, bet ween All»rf and Waldron, and will extend it between Waldron and as far above Abode net* its The shnmboat will permit him. The intention is to form a patty here toraccoinpar.y him on tlie trip up tlie river. The examination by Gen. Gleason, thus far, has not been a formal survey, hut a general observation and the collection of such informa*i n as cun be wade useful in bringing a direct appropriation to. the attention of Pongrees at its next or subsequent se-sion. Tlie niteiior object in view is a water communication between tlie Mississippi and the lakes, through such connections, of which there are several practical ones, as shall bo found most feasible. Tlie project it-clf is important; the country to be benefited is largo, is already well settled, aud will, if the project is carried mil, receive a large contrlbuiiou of local and through business. Gen. G. is highly olcased with his observations and information thus far, and will be ab’c to furnish facts strongly in support of the contemplated improvement. His owtr impressions are so favorably that he has requested Maj. (Smith to visit this city, and examine with him the porttou of the river already visited, and extend his trip over the portion yet lobe examined. —Kankakee (Ills.) Gazette.
