The renders of The Union are presented this week with a supplement containing some facts and figures relative to the political history of Hon. Daniel W. Voorhees, covering a period of some fifteen years, and a speech delivered by Hon. W. W. Curry at Rushville, this state, on Saturday, August 10th. Thpy are both interesting and valuable campaign documents and should be read by every voter in the state. T. M. Jones, of Kankakee City, 111., will open a merchant tailor shop in Rensselaer, ou or about the 9th of September, 1878, and will endeavor to carry a full line of piece goods of latest patterns. Mr. Jones conies well recommended, and by close attention to business and good work hopes to merit a liberal share pt public patronage. His stock will consist of all the latest styles of goods, of best quality, and he proposes to sell at prices which will defy competition Keep your orders until his arrival and learn something to your advantage. The republicans held interesting meetings this weela al the Thornton school house in Newton township, and Center school honse, Barkley township. Mr. S < }\ Thompson was the principle speaker-at each place and was listened to with marked attention and evident interest. The Thornton school house meeting was held Monday night. It was presided over by Solomon Thornton a veteran republican, staunch and steadfast, and the secretary was John Watt, young, vigorous and active. At the Barkley township meeting Mr. S. B._ Nicholls presided and Capt. G. W. Payne was secretary. Barkley township will give a handsome majority this year for every candidate on the republican ticket. They take it straight, without a scratch.
A joint political discussion will he held at Remington, Indiana, September 3d, at 7:30 p. nt., at Rensselaer, September 6th, at 2 p. m. by Hon. Morgan H. Weir, democratic candidate for representative in con* gressm-l William H. Calkins republican candidate. At Rensselaer the debate will be held on the court house square which will be provided with suitable platfonp for the speakers and seats ample for the audience. Both gentlemen are fluent sp> akers, able debaters, aud men of recognized ability. They have agreed upon a code of rules to govern their debates which excludes offensive personalities and confines them lo the Icgtlimnle discussion of the recognised* issue* which divide the two great national parties this campaign. The debate will occupy two hours and a half, end, without will be the most interesting political discussion tbift has been heard in Jasper county for many years.
