THE CROCODILES.
f It is surprising what a number of dyed-in-the-wool democrats had decided to vote the entire republican local ticket this year, if only their favorite had been nominated for recorder. Their favorite for this nomination was qither of the unsuccessful aspirants, entirely owing to the republican with whom they talk. Of course this is all mere gammon ; all pretended foreffect, to make somebody feel badly or to induce somebody to act childishly. It is too thin to bide the hypocrite behind. Had Mr. Keeve been successful the same despicable crocodiles wou Id have creaked ;ring-candidate; had Mr. Porter been nominated they would have barked about postoffice influence, and so it would have gone around the list. They called together a' meeting of theii central committee on the day of the republican convention for the purpose of inventing pretexts for fault-finding and contemptible campaign lies. It would have been just the.same if they had been permitted to make the nominations themselves, as some of them had the audacity to try to do. It is folly to listen to their gammon. They have neither the manly honesty to nominate a ticket of their own, nor the spirit to resent the arbitrary dictates of an unscrupulous ring* It is the grossest impudence for them to interfere with anybody else. If they prefer a confederate sympathiser and communist, who can write scarcely a legible hand, to a republican well qualified for the place, the choice is before them; but let them be honest about it and electioneer upon the merits of the issue. James T. Abbctt is a gentleman In every sense; his character is without blemish or immoral staiu; his educational qualifications are far superior to those of his competitor; and the taxpaying population of Jasper county will not hesitate in their choice of the two rival candidates for recorder.
Major John B. Milroy, democrat, of Carroll county, called a meeting at Wanatah JasLThursday to nominate a flat national candidate for congress. Seven of the ten counties of this district were represented in the convention. Hon. Anson Wolcott suggested for nomination Mayor John N. Skinner, democrat, of Valparaiso, and of course he received ttJF"unanimous consent of all present- Mr- Wolcott is becoming numerous in these conventions this year. He has fairly earned the title Great Democratic Nominator and Convention Manipulator. He nominated Major, Brown and Skinner this year; but somehow nobody hears the democracy talking about his cupidity as they did last campaign. Why? Ezra C. Noweis the soldiers’ friend will have an opportunity to reduce his professions to practice at the polls in October. He may vote for Benjamin R. Farris for auditor and help defeat his copperhead competitor; he may vote for Henry I. Adams for treasurer and help defeat the pieman; he may vote for George M. Robinson for sherifl* and help defeat bis flat competitor. Yee; Ezra may continue right aloug, now his hand is in, and vote for all the republican candidates; for they are all excellent men. According to Ezra’s opiuion there is a good deal of latent goodness and loyalty in his composition, and all it needs to be developed is just such an opportunity as will be presented this coming fall. ,
The friends of Willis J. Imesand of James Yeoman must feel happy that, these gentlemen were beaten In the flat convention by a man who now asks a republican editor to publish that he is not a democrat and does not believe in ttye doctrine of the democratic party, Ezra C. Newels has played It a 1-e-e-t-l-e the sharpest on the Jasper democracy tbis season they have ever experienced. They must vote fbr him, however, because the doctor says they must, and because—because—because “our organ must be sustained in Altout $1350 wits the estimated size of the fund which a prominent national thought would be necessary foe their candidates to raise for county campaign purposes. Five times that amount will noteleet a raau o.f them. “That boss’s eyes is sot.”'
Charley H. Price Is reported io have exclaimed In an uugarded moment '•Kira C. Nowela fa a fool!” Wonder What Ezra’s friends think of Charley When they remember his action at the Bradford convention two years ago? Wonder what Hon. Geo. H. Brown’s friends think of Charley,? Wonder if Charley really believes Mr. Brown pilfered those Reports for Justice W. E. Moore, present flat candidate for county treasurer? Isn’t that a lovely ticket, anyway?
Morgan H. Weir, of Laporte county, was nominated yesterday by the democracy, for representative in congress from this district. It fa understood that Skinner, the fiat candidate, will withdraw in Weir’s favor at the proper hour. In his speech of acceptance Mr. Weir said that the nationals and democrats are acting in conjunction in the district. He undoubtedly understands the situation and speaks truthfully, ffational-flatiarn ls bat a phase of democratic repudiation.
Every township in the county was fully represented in the convention last Saturday. It was the largest nominating convention ever held In the county. There is no doubt of the determination of the republicans to elect their entire ticket and the emulation will be to see how large the majority they can roll up. They will make a cleau sweep this time and no mistake. Up to the present date the flat democracy have had their own way at the district school houses. Now let them watch their corners. From now until the polls close in October it will be a lively war. Jasper county republicans are wide awake, aggressive, and propose to furnish five hundred majority for the state ticket. Look out, fiats.
The republicans who are so independent as to scratch their tickets in Indiana this year hazard success, toy with defeat, and give that much aid and comfort to a relentless enemy. There are too many democrats in power now for the welfare and prosperity of the people. If it be true, as the chairman of the democratic county central committee and the democratic candidate for county clerk swore last week, that Nowels“is a G—d d—d fool,” .how can they consistently ask people to elect him county auditor?
Only a few years ago Mr. EzriT C. Nowels was ready to fight for men who Were wearing butternut breastpins to indicate their sympathy with rebellion ; now Mr. Nowels asks those who were soldiers to vote for him. A vote for Major or Brown is a vote to elect Mr. Voorhees United States senator. Mr- Voorhees was a salarygrabber and rebel sympathiser. Hon. Daniel W. Voorhees wants A. Lincoln’s dogs to vote for Hon. George H. Brown and Hon. George Major that they may vote for him. It must be exceedingly soothing to the friends of Ezra C. Nowels to know that Charley H. Price thinks be is a blank blank fool. Hon. Godlove 8. Orth was nominated for congress, yesterday, by the republicans of the ninth district, on the twenty-sixth ballot. John G. Troxell, democrat, anciently a citizen of Rensselaer, is the national fiat candidate for clerk of Carroll county.
