The democrats in the house of represent* atives, under the leadership of General Ewing, defeated the proposition to make greeubaeks receivable for customs duties'. The measure had passed the senate, but was defeated by the democrats in ilte boused Its passage would have placed greenbacks f on a perfect equality with gold and removed the last impediment to the resumption of specie payments. For this tory reason the democrats end inflationists defeated it. They do not want greenbacks brought to par, - and do not want resumption of specie payments, for when that is accomplished their occupation will be gono.
